Breaking Down The 2013 Class

Damion Terry

Spartan Tailgate takes a player-by-player look at Michigan State's 2013 class, including their outlook for next season.

    • "MSU offensive line coach Mark Staten feels that Finley is far from reaching his full potential and is likely a very ripe orange full of juice and ready to be squeezed. "

      Uh...

    • I thought Bodanis had to sit a year?

And Trey Kilgore is projected at DT. I know he will be undersized but maybe his speed will make up for that...

Narduzzi told me today they're still waiting to hear back about Bodanis' status for next season, and how many years of eligibility he'll have left to play.

    • This class doesn't seem to have any "reaches". 5 4-stars is a solid effort for MSU in terms of #s and guys like Holmes, Jones, Powell Shelton and Chmura are all 3-stars who I could see starring in a few years.

An interesting note is that MSU has has may recruits from MI as from FL (3).

      SpartanRocky

    • So if Geiger isn't our kicker next year, who the hell is? Muma?

      Muma, Sadler, Fischer.

Probably gonna be Geiger for PK and Muma for kickoffs again.

    • The thought of a Lewis/Geiger combination at safety next year just made me buy National Championship tickets. Just when I thought our defense couldn't get any better...

VERY intriguing stat on Mi and Fl recruits....when was the last time that happened? I'd assume it never has....that's a very good sign IMO

    • I see 17 shirts.

      Best chance to play......Geiger

      Maybe Chmura,,,,or a running back.

RB for sure. Holmes or D. Williams have the physical tools- it's a matter of learning the offense and blocking schemes.

I'm torn on whether I want to see Reschke play in 2013. He'll learn a ton from Max regardless, but I'd probably prefer he get his reps with the scout team and put on 10-12 lbs before stepping in as the starter in 2014.

The plan, as far as I know, is for Reschke to apprentice behind Bullough this year, just like Bullough did behind Greg Jones in '10. That should mitigate some of the inevitable drop-off between 3-year starter Bullough to 1st year starter Reschke in '14.

      All the linemen will RS.

The DBs should RS; there are 4 viable safeties in Lewis, Drummond, Williamson and Jones, with D. Cox being added to the mix. At CB, Waynes/Robinson/Colquhoun are going to fight it out for the #2 CB. #s don't seem to favor having a true FR DB see the field.

Chmura . . . . he'd have to be very polished to play right away. Price and Jones have an extra year in the system, and Gleichert was making a push before he got injured.

The RBs . . . I bet at least 1 of them doesn't RS, probably Holmes or Williams. Shelton is similar to Tompkins; makes sense to put some separation between them. MSU needs a power back and Holmes/Williams are really the only 2 options, unless Langford takes a big leap.

Terry will RS unless he comes in and blows everyone away in fall camp.

There is always a chance a DT gets in the rotation, but with Hoover back, not sure that happens.

      Agree about DTs.

You're forgetting Harris & Davis in the middle. We have a lot of great LBs in our second string. I love the Reschke signing, but let's let the guys on the roster make their play, too.

By #s alone, at least 1 of the RBs will be in the rotation, all three will probably gets carries (barring injury) in the first few games, unless they move Williams back.

Unless Churma blows everyone away, or if the injury bug returns, he should RS. TEs in our system need the year just like OL, as they must be able to block. Also, don't forget about Mills, if he makes grades again, players were already saying after bowl game when Sims was gone that he was the best TE on team and would start the opener.

      True freshman DTs won't play.

Shane Jones probably won't burn his shirt with Davis and Harris still in the fold, and Riley Bullough also pushing for PT.

Either Williams or Holmes will play significantly imo.

Chmura is going to redshirt. Mills is a good blocker and Price is probably one of the better receiving TEs we have.

In an ideal world that's true, depends on what happens with our depth and injuries. Off the bat, they should RS for sure. But if more than 2 players aren't in pads on opening day...

Darian Harris and Ed Davis are both OLBs; Harris is a "STAR" and Davis a "SAM". The #2 MIKE is Elsworth at the moment.

Agreed on the rest, though Mills isn't on the roster at the moment.

That's not a good sign, although this year could be an aberration. The QB going to UM was never going to come to MSU, and MSU is likely ok with that since they got their man (Terry).

Locking down Michigan is important, and there are some great 2014 prospects that would look good in green.

Yeah, he's tweeting like crazy, really hope he's good to go.

And Rocky, I've read in the past that they've considered both at MLB, and from a player standpoint, both have 2 years in the system more than JR, so obviously you'd prefer your older players to play.

2013 wasn't a very good year for the state. 2014 should be a much better year, but I have no problem gettign kids from down south. They are on a whole different level down there

Guess I'm missing out since I'm not on twitter; just pointing out that he's not on the roster. I know he was in fall camp; saw pics of him with his name on his helmet lol.

Harris and Davis? Really? Davis maybe, but Harris was a HS S that seemed slotted for Star. Both only saw PT at OLB this past year (limited). Reshcke's been quoted as saying that he was told by MD to be ready to play as a true FR because he'd work in behind Bullough with the plan to be a 3-year starter after Max leaves. You can probably find the quote in his thread on tDuff; that's what I was basing my statement on.

I think the bottom line is that MSU has an embarrassment of riches at LB.

2013 wasn't a bad year either. There were about 7 4-stars; Morris, Dawson, Lewis, Reschke and Elmer were consensus. Shallman may be as well, but I'm not sure. After that, you've got Delano Hill and Finley. That's about par for the course in MI.

In '14 it'll be about the same; McDowell and Harris may push for 5-star status, but after that it looks like Webb, Drake and Marshall are the only 4-star "locks".

Right now 247 has Chance Stewart as a 91 4-star and Tommy Doles as a 90 4-star. Stewart's already dropped from a 94 to a 91; neither in-state program is giving him a look and he may drop further. Doles will probably stay at around a 90, especially if he commits to UM.

Marshall will go to USC if they offer, and given the way their last class ended, the Trojans may well come knocking. McDowell will likely go to UM, though that fight's not over. Webb may not end up at tOSU in the end. Doles will likely end up at UM or ND. I think MSU can get Connor Hayes if they offer. Byron Bullough could push for a 4-star rating, though I suspect he'll start at an 87 3-star like Riley did.

All in all, the in-state quality doesn't look much different in '14 than '13. Difference is that UM probably won't dominate the state like they did this past year. MSU already has 2 of the top 4 and the longer Harris stays committed to MSU, the more and more I like his chances of signing with the Spartans come February.
