Williams Exits EL Uncommitted

Delton Williams

Williams came ... and went.

All signs pointed to Delton Williams joining Michigan State's Class of 2013 but it did not happen ...

    • Definitely not concerned but it is weird. Coach could have given him the "go home and think about it" thing as he's done with some kids in the past. We've been his leader, the game was a great environment, we had alot of top prospects there, had a great conversation with Dantonio, all signs pointing towards the good.

WVU hasn't been much of a threat throughout the entire process. I'd be surprised if they made up a ton of ground and stole a kid from us because why? WVU put up some points. That team wouldn't score more than twice on a good Defense and even we could put up 40 against that D of theirs.
For all we know Coach D is still considering taking a commitment. I'll get concerned if he puts off the commitment until the end of the season and schedules a few visits. Until then all we've got to go on his is his tweet, "should know by the end of the week" sounds more like we're making the decision, not him.
But hey, as closely as I follow recruiting, I'm wrong all the time. They're 17 year olds and they can change their mind quickly.

    • Elsewhere Terry was asked about it, and he was no-comment. I'd guess MSU is tapping the breaks here. May be dependent on who may or may not be returning next year.

Not if your a defensive recruit.

    • For all we know at this point we could have abandoned the idea of another scholly to the secondary for now.

    • Wonder how that "talk" with Coach D went...

Agreed. WVU's tissue paper defense is not the kind of thing that a recruit would go for, I would think.

Listening to Bill King this a.m., some caller from Columbus asked Bill's opinion on whether MSU's defense was dirty. Bill laughed and said he didn't know about that, but that "at MSU, they play real hard and they hit hard."

I would think THAT is the kind of thing a D-recruit wants to be a part of.

yeah but they hit players who are obviously trying to run out of bounds which is, almost like doing something illegal, you know?

Delton Williams - (ATH) played safety and running back recruited by Mark Staten, Offensive Line Coach.

Um how about recruiting some 4/5 star O-linemen for a change? This has been our biggest gaping hole since you got here and huge need. Thanks.

I know one thing has nothing to do with the other, but oddly enough, I thought the exact same thing. Clearly the O-line is our biggest concern and has been for years. Why does it seem like this is such an afterthought with this coaching staff?

well, in 2009 (which would be seniors or RS JR now), we had:
Barrent (4*) - retired due to injury
Klatt (4*) - lots of injury problems
Treadwell (4*) - lots of injury problems, played defense due to necessity as a FR
Conway (3*) - lots of injury problems
      Reynolds (3*) - is now a DL

in 2008 we took 5 OL, but none of them really panned out except McDonald. This was Coach D's first full recruiting class though.

      in 2010, we had 4 OL recruits; in 2011, 3; in 2012, 3.

I'm not sure what a normal amount of OL is in a class (I'd guess 4-5 probably), which we had until 2011. Maybe they've just had trouble recruiting them, I'm not sure I'd say it's an "afterthought" though.

    • Hasn't Dantonio and staff been pretty consistant about the "Don't commit unless you are absolutely sure" and "Go home, think about it, talk about it and we'll call or you call us"?

This wouldn't be the first time a recruit shows up for a visit, something happens or is said that causes MSU to back off and we never hear why.

I know we've had some bad luck with the few recruits we've had, but it just seems that we would be hearing and reading about more O-line recruiting under the circumstances. We're lousy with linebackers and d-backs, but that's all I read about. Hell, I even hear we're recruting juco receivers. Why aren't we recruting juco linemen to fill our immediate need? And given the fact that we've had such bad luck with linemen, shouldn't we be recruiting and/or signing 30-50 percent more of them?

I'm not certain my perception is right. I'm just saying that it appears that they aren't making linemen the priority they should be.

possibly. I'm not sure you can just pile on a couple more linemen every year because you've had injury problems though. You'd be taking away potential spots from other positions. And planning for bad luck generally isn't really the greatest strategy in the world. I would like to see at least 4 OL recruits per year, but I doubt the staff is looking at 5 guys, pulling 3 of them in and saying "eh, fuck it, good enough."

    • IMHO...we spend the remaining scholarships on OL. Even Plan B or C. Develop the hell out of them. We need the numbers and the competition would be good. We have no problem with recruiting WRs...let's start bringing in more OL.

We're lousy with linebackers and d-backs? You're gonna have to explain this. We've got the deepest LB core in the country and have young, talented DB's coming out of our ears in the near future.
This is a Delton Williams thread. He's being recruited as a Defensive ATH and looks to be a LB/Safety Hybrid type player.

Other than this sentence, I liked your post.

Please explain how we're "lousy" at recruiting and developing the best (and most deep) units on our team......

It must have auto-corrected him from "awesome" or something... that's all I can come up with.

Or perhaps because it has another meaning..like we're full of linebackers and DBs.

Never know. That Baylor score might indicate earlier PT if you connect the dots (if that's a primary concern of his). I'm not going there with my opinion. Seems like Williams has always held MSU in high regard. He's having a solid senior season, and I hope it all works out for him.

Yeah, but the ones we do get have trouble catching the ball...
