Jack is back to give you choice when it comes to Dantonio's football team and Izzo's basketball team ...
For me it's football and it's not a tough decision.
There is a ton of basketball left and we would still control our destiny. Now if you tell me that the outcome of the basketball game will be the difference between a conference champiohship or not, then it's a different story.
Also, I am probably more positive about the basketball team than most. Indiana is the only team in the league that I would say is clearly better than us right now.
I'd take the bowl win. The basketball team will have plenty of opportunities to get back in the Big 10 race; the football team would avoid bottoming out.
I wrote it in my preview yesterday, but I think there's a significant difference between being able to say that the Spartans have had 3 straight winning seasons, including back to back bowl wins vs. 2 losing seasons in 4 years.
What you do at the close of a season is more impactful than what you do at the beginning, regardless of the sport. Ending on a positive note gives you hope for the next year, and certainly looks better to any remaining perspective recruits. Either outcome can be overcome with the right team chemistry and hard work, but I'd prefer winning them both!
A bowl game for a football team is always going to be more important to the teams season and future than the first conference game of the basketball team, unless a meteor falls on the basketball team and kills them all and the coach.
If you were asking between playing in the BWW Bowl for a 7-6 record against a NCAA tournament game for the basketball team then it might be a hard choice.
I would like to see a strong showing in the bowl game. No stupid penalties or guys getting beat deep. I'd like to see WRs catching the ball. Win or lose. I would like to see the bball team start the season on a tear. I feel like there's a chance for them to build up a strong conference record early on here and with the inevitable mid-season lull, we will need that. The football team is likely going to have an all new identity next year, with the workhorse gone, so... I can't believe I'm saying this, but I would prefer a strong win over Minnesota, if I can only have one.
