'We Didn't Answer The Bell Tonight'

Keith Appling

Keith Appling had just six points and four turnovers Tuesday at Breslin

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Freshman Gary Harris had 19 points, but point guard Keith Appling shot 1 of 8 as MSU fell, 72-68 to No. 1 Indiana Tuesday at Breslin Center.

    • Very disappointed group in the locker room with very few answers. Going through the tape now and I need to, considering I could barely hear Keith Appling or Gary Harris' hushed responses. Izzo mentioned distractions leading up to the game and had to be talking about Derrick Nix' comments about MSU's players being underrated in comparison with guys like Oladipo and Zeller. Nix had left the locker room by the time Izzo was done with his presser and did not speak to any media, to my knowledge.

All told, MSU can feel good about a few things here, mainly the second half improvement and inspired play from Payne and, at times, Valentine. The Spartans also know they let a huge opportunity slip away thanks to several costly mistakes. Should be interesting to see how they respond Saturday.

You think Izzo needs to keep Nix away from the media the rest of the season?

    • Thanks for the insight Dan, hopefully they respond well

    • "despite missing much of the first half due to foul trouble"

lol Payne committed a foul with his nose !!

Indiana was the better team tonight. Great game to learn from and nothing for the guys to hang their heads over for too long (everybody's pre-season #1), just grow from it. Hell, I'd much rather face Indiana in the final four than in the B1G tournament the way things stand now.

    • I wonder if Izzo was really pissed about Nix's comments. Can't believe how the RCMB was eating that up.

Dear God, I hope not. Nix is the best quote on the team. I just think Izzo was most disappointed in the timing of Nix' comments and the fact that he's a senior captain.

      Dan Kilbridge

    • frankly, between nix's comments and his intentional (non-called) shot to the groin on zeller (don't even try to tell me that wasn't intentional and don't try to say zeller's was intentional 'cause it wasn't), i'm starting to feel like his captaincy should be taken away...

if you think zeller's shot was unintentional, you have never played a sport before. clear cheap shot. these ain't choir boys. and dont be a pussy.

You are an idiot. Nix is a team player and leader through and through. He's made mistakes but so has everyone on this team including Izzo. Be a f'n Spartan and man up you puss.

      EZMAC

    • Yep the timing of Nix's comments probably did not help. Took a little pressure off IU's guys and gave them a bit of bulletin board material. Zeller came out strong and Oladipo badly outplayed Dawson.

    • These big games are why Izzo gave Appling his captaincy, b/c when he reverts to his old passive self he has games like this. I think this is the next big step in Appling's career, is to be able to play all these big games like he did the scUM game

    • If we just hit our free throwns, we win the game. Those things happen and will always " make them and you win miss them you lose". The team played well and had there chance to win. This loss does not make or break a season.

    • Somebody explain to me why we don't go through Payne every play? He is clearly our best player and he was shooting lights out as usual, he just does not get nearly enough touches. I just can't find the answers to it.

      This is pretty much it.

You can say what you want about Appling, Dawson, Izzo's coaching, etc. but we left some crucial points on the board at the FT line. In a close game like this , that really can be the difference between a W an a L.

That was in the second half. His two first half fouls were boneheaded.

How could you tell? ESPN only replayed Zellers shot one or two times!

Being the best quote on the team is good for you, but not necessarily for the team. Kid still hasn't learned to let his play do the talking.

MSU had a better % than IU from the line last night. FT's were not the problem.

You're a blind idiot. Look at the tape.. Zeller did an all time academy award impersonation of the "injured" soccer player. Nix didn't even swing his arm and his arm contacted Zeller's chest.. not his groin.. Zeller didn't even clutch until well after he was "hit".
Trying to fake the refs.. A really wussie move if you ask me.
