Not too thrilled that there's a 4-way competition at FS. At some point, the coaches need to settle on the starter and let him build chemistry with the other 3 guys. Figure Jones sticks at #2 SS and Drummond starts.

Eh, Narduzzi's a talker. I think it's still pretty clearly Drummond's job to lose with Williamson close behind, but Cox & Jones are playing well also. I agree it would be in the staff's best interest to land on a starting four sooner rather than later and not tinker with that too much in-season. Really cost the Spartans in 2009 when they toyed around with different combos throughout the nonconference.

Yea, it's a bit different since the other 3 spots are locked up. May just be a motivational tool for Drummond, but football starved people (ahem, like me) will hang on every word this time of year lol.

16 days until kick-off. Gotta say, best thing about the Friday night game is that we have all day Saturday to watch football with our feet up on the couch (or barstool). Planning on a marathon football session, from ND-Navy through till Alabama - Michigan.

I especially appreciate the Saturday off to catch all the games as opposed to sneaking a glimpse at the tiny TVs in the Spartan Stadium press box Saturday afternoons.

And Narduzzi is a master motivator as well as an expert in coach speak. But he's usually genuine and will tell us when a certain player isn't getting the job done. No such statements regarding Drummond this fall.

    • Fire Drummond for not stepping up.

    • Narduzzi is also hilariously old school when it comes to injuries. Obviously he doesn't want players practicing with concussion or serious injury, but guys in yellow jerseys are pretty much worthless in his eyes.

When asked what he was most upset about in fall camp thus far:

"Least happy with the guys who are sitting in yellow jerseys. They gotta push through it and toughen up and all that. We preach toughness. You wish a guy would push through it. Wish we didn't have any yellow jerseys on. ... It's (the players' choice) and the trainer's choice. But if someone gave me a yellow jersey I'd take it off and say, 'I can go. I'm good enough to go.' But you gotta tough through it and some guys can't and some guys we don't want to. ... Sometimes trainers don't know how kids feel. you want to take those things off. I'm not saying we have 6,000 of them either, we don't have that many, but I wish we had none. you can't get better sitting on the sideline."

Rocky, what makes you feel that Drummond is better than Jones? Wasn't Jones the slated starter at the other safety spot pre-injury?

Yes, he and Isaiah Lewis were very close at SS last spring prior to Jones' injury. But Williamson was so good on scout team as a true freshman that I think, all things being equal, he would win out over Jones based on the fact that he's a younger player.

      2 reasons:

      1) Drummond played the full year healthy last year at NB. We saw what that type of experience could yield when Lewis moved from NB to SS last year. Jones, OTOH, injured his Achilles and only made it back for the Iowa game. Drummond has more playing time under his belt overall.

      2) Drummond has been repping at FS when not at NB last year and was Robinson's back-up. Jones, meanwhile, was working at the SS spot. This spring, Drummond was at FS the whole time, and now into fall camp, while JJ worked at SS and NB. That gives Drummond more experience at the FS position than Jones.

Talk is that Jones is going to be the SS on 3rd downs and Lewis is going to slide to nickel. The top 3 safeties get a fair amount of PT in the MSU D, especially with the Delta package being such a big part of the D.

IIRC, he's the strongest player on the team. That's impressive, considering ARW was a state power-lifting champ out of HS.

Think it's pretty close between he and ARW.

By the way, I was also curious about who the fastest player on the team is. Easy question last year with Keshawn Martin followed by Edwin Baker, but not so obvious in 2012. Asked several players and gathered a consensus, with the final results to be included in tomorrow's RCR.

See, I'm always more interested in who is the slowest player on the team. You guys never talk about that stuff. Currently I'm guessing its a tie between Burbridge and Treadwell

    • I can't wait to see the personnel packages we utilize on "Money Down". There are so many possibilities with formations and players at each level of the defense.

I mentioned Lyles as a possible contributor at DE there yesterday, Darien Harris could also be used in a variety of ways. Will be interesting to see where MSU goes considering there are so many options with the depth.

Trick question. Whoever gholston is chasing in practice is the fastest

Keshawn probably wasn't the fastest guy on the team but he sure was the quickest.

Would anyone have a problem with:

      DE: Gholston

      NT: Hoover

      DE: Thomas

      OLB: Tai Jones

      MIKE: Bullough

      OLB: Denicos

      Nickel: Lewis

      CB: Adams

      CB: Dennard

      FS: Drummond

      SS: Jones

      ?

      Other options:

      DE: Rush

      NT: Reynolds

      DE: Heath

      OLB: Norman

      MIKE: Hammock

      OLB: Darian Harris

      Or:

      DE: Gholston

      NT: White

      DE: Calhoun

      OLB: Norman

      MIKE: Bullough

      OLB: Ed Davis
