True freshman forward Kenny Kaminski will miss 4-6 months after undergoing successful surgery for a torn labrum, Michigan State announced Monday.
The 6-foot-7 prospect, ranked the No. 3 player in Ohio by 247Sports, had the surgery September 7. Kaminski also missed all of his senior basketball season with the same injury after having surgery on a torn labrum suffered during football season.
Kaminski was approaching full-strength this summer and participated in the Moneyball Pro-Am Summer League along with the rest of the Spartan freshmen. He estimated himself to be at 80-percent last July before requiring another surgery.
It’s entirely possible Kaminski would have redshirted in 2012 regardless, but that’s now a certainty. And the freshman will miss valuable practice time while out with said injury.

A few thoughts here: This doesn't really hurt the Spartans this season. He didn't factor in as a key piece and likely would have redshirted, while MSU has some depth there now with Costello and Gauna. Not a big deal regarding 2012-13 season.
It is, however, a very big deal for Kaminski's development and could be really harmful long-term. We've seen Russell Byrd struggle to become the player he was and we saw Adreian Payne get pushed around in the paint as a freshman after rehabbing from shoulder surgery the previous offseason. And Kaminski doesn't exactly have Payne's physical tools.
Considering Kaminski missed all of his senior season with the same injury and now will be out for much of 2012-13, he'll be going on nearly two years with no significant game experience. Really hard to deal with something like that and this is just a big-time bummer for Kaminski and his development.
