Valentine should see extended minutes in Trice's absence

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- MSU coach Tom Izzo said sophomore guard Travis Trice has concussion symptoms and will likely miss Tuesday's game in Atlanta.

Sounds like Valentine will get the call here and it's gonna be a great test for the freshman. Needs to maintain his poise but he looked great in that respect for most of Friday's game. I've been anxious to see Valentine at the point for the past two years and now we'll probably get to see it earlier than expected.

From my seat at home it really looked like the Spartans were most effective with Trice/Appling in at the same time. That was the case at times last year also. Thinking Valentine/Appling could create a similar dynamic with a little more size in the back court.

It may actually set up nicely for Valentine. Kansas starts a 6'4'' PG, so that may make it a little easier.

Agreed. Harris actually showed off his jumper in Germany and I didn't expect that this early. He's shot it OK in practice but looked very confident in that respect Friday.

I think Harris will be a stud, but I dont understand why everyone acts like he was so great against Uconn. He was 4-13 from the field including 1-7 from three.

Don't just look at the stat sheet. The way he carried himself and the confidence is the thing.

Trice is less of a pure PG than Neitzel ever was and Drew wasn't even a pure PG. The closest thing we have to a pure PG is Denzel Valentine. I'm not sure if his handle is tight enough for high level pressure defense like he'll see against the Rock Chalks but I guess we'll find out on Tuesday just how ready he is. I'm kind of looking forward to it.

I think we'll definitely see that in some variation this season. Izzo mentioned the success of the smaller lineup today while reflecting on the UCONN game and I think he does want to get Dawson more action at the 4. Also agree with others that pointed out we could see Valentine in this lineup at the 3.

I really hope Nix and Payne have a better showing against Kansas. Also Trice will be missed. Looking forward to see what Valentine and Kearney can contribute. Also can't wait to see Costello.

Yep. He had eight defensive rebounds in 24 minutes against UCONN. That gives him a nice advantage in starting a break himself.
