Replacing Dion Sims - Who Steps Up?

Juwan Caesar

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Juwan Caesar took reps at tight end during bowl practices

Spartan Tailgate looks at the tight end picture for 2013 with Dion Sims reportedly set to leave school early for the NFL Draft.

    • Jamare Mills isn't listed on the roster for whatever reason. Any insight?

    • MSU consistently produces good TEs. Heck, our 3rd string guy from last season, Celek, is playing and contributing in the NFL for a playoff team. Sims was a special talent, but I expect TE to always be a position of strength and depth at State.

    • Didn't Denzel Drone get some reps in spring ball at TE? No LT at TE?

He did, but moved back to D full time.

I'm rooting for Juwan Caesar, just because I want AC/DC's "All Hail Caesar" to play during the pre-game warm-ups . . . .

Drone at TE didn't really work out from what I'm told, so he moved back to the defensive line pretty much full time. And I think MSU is really focused on developing LT as a defensive lineman at the time being.

    • I don't know how huge a loss Sims is going to be heading into 2013. He never really blossomed to the degree I had hoped. He seemed to suffer through a myriad of injuries during his MSU career that slowed his development, and at times the TE position appeared to be an afterthought in the offense. If Sims had been used similarly to those at Notre Dame, or Wisconsin he would be looking at a potential first round draft status. I truly believe his potential impact in the MSU offense was severely reduced this year because of the play calling, and the performance of Maxwell.

Sims ended 2012 with 36 receptions. Not an insurmountable number of receptions to duplicate even if MSU employees a TE by committee using Gleichert, Jones, Lang, and Price, (I'm not expecting Hoebing seeing much playing time in the rotation). Juwan Caesar is reportedly in the mix, as is Lawrence Thomas. If MSU's offense relied more heavily on the TE in the passing game then I would have more of a concern.

Yeah he did. As someone pointed out a couple days ago Marcus Horne isn't on there either, but they have profiles on the website.

    • From his twitter, it appears Horne has transferred to Northern Iowa.

    • wasn't there an issue with Mills' grades? like he was gonna need some help before he could qualify?

    • who are we recruiting in cali

      Rittenberg/Bennett ‏@ESPN_BigTen

MSU has only one California native (juco transfer Fou Fonoti) on roster. RT @CoachDuzzMSU: Headed to LA today for a little recruiting trip.

      SpartanHoops

    • What is the scoop on Evans and Price thru bowl practice? both still projected to play TE? I recall spring practice rumors that Evans could go OL. Is the progression with them that slow that they won't crack the 3 deep?

    • I think Sims loss in terms of impact on the team will not be great because he never contributed that much while here. His is a very unfulfilled legacy...always talking about what I guy with his size and speed could do for the offense but in reality due to suspension and injury he didn't contribute all that much. .I think even Eric Knott contributed more and that wasn't much. Sims will be one of the great "what ifs" but "never weres".

Should have seen him in the last minute drives vs. Wisconsin and TCU.

    • He may not have put up the greatest stats, but he was still huge for the offense. He was the only effective pass catcher all years. Teams specifically focused on him. Players don't have to put up big numbers to affect a game.

      MSUManiac13

    • I'm sure our TE coach has someone all lined up to utilize perfectly and coach up to their potential...who wouldn't have faith in that

      Agree.

there were times that Sims and Bell were the ONLY playmakers on this offense.

I believe we don't win Boise State w/o Sims. He may have not had many catches, but no one did. His hands, and footwork where off the charts for his size. If I could have one of the three early departees come back for one more year, it would be a healthy Sims. That would have been a great weapon.
