Lippett, WRs Look To Bounce Back

Tony Lippett

Lippett had three receptions for 62 yards Friday

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Tony Lippett and the rest of the Spartan wideouts were back at it Tuesday hoping for a better showing this week at Central Michigan.

    • “It’s behind me. … Mistakes are gonna happen, so just bounce back from it and I’ll be good,” Lippett said. “It’s very important for us to get a rhythm going into a tough game as far as Notre Dame. We want to take every day as far as today, tomorrow and Thursday to get a rhythm and just feel good about what we’re doing throughout the week so we can come out on Saturday and produce.”

Anybody else concerned that a player is referring to the game NEXT weekend as the tough game as opposed to THIS weekend? It feels like we have plenty of recent experience with CMU that should prevent this type of talk and thinking, but Lippett's comments indicate otherwise.

In some other years, yes. This year, no. CMU IS preparation for ND this season, a chance to work out the kinks before there's little room for error.

Lippett was asked specifically about the importance of this game moving forward into Notre Dame week. I, for one, thought it was extremely refreshing to hear a player respond with something other than 'one game at a time.' Of course 100-percent of the focus this week is on CMU. But that doesn't mean guys aren't aware of what lies ahead.

If anything, you'd think the guys would be focused MORE this week, knowing this is the last chance to improve in a real game before the Irish come to town. They know they have to step it up after last Friday's showing. I'm expecting them to do so.

It indicates he better catch the ball, hang on to the ball, and I think he will.

    • I'd like to see more short passes to the RB's - Bell and Caper (or perhaps Langford or Kings)? Off play action...get them into the open field & see what happens. That screen to Caper was ill-fated but Caper should see more touches.

    • Lippet had 2 bad plays or the passing game would have looked stellar besides the botched screen. Even on the bad plays he was wide open or on his way to the endzone, the staff will show continued confidence in him and he will bounce back.

      I still stick with

      Mumph
      Fowler
      Sims D
      Lipp
      Sims AJ/Arnett

      As the leading recievers.

    • I'm just gonna say this. I think Bell gets a bit of a breather this week and sees limited carries in an opportune time to give our best weapon a rest. This is going to be a great time to focus on that passing game and work out the wrinkles. We'll hopefully see more of Hill and Caper and the receivers and have better results. I won't be too concerned until I see us struggle against a MAC level set of DB's. For now I think we just relax the criticisms, light CMU up and prepare.

@joerexrode: MSU WR coach Terry Samuel says Burbridge had good practice Tuesday. Not sure yet if PT is in his future. "Nobody's safe."

@joerexrode: Samuel said Arnett stood out Tuesday and will play more at CMU. "He earned it."

    • I say we will try to throw the ball 50 times this week, for rythem's sake if nothing else.

Agree. Those two turnovers by Lippett are kinda stuck in my throat. Let's call a spade a spade - those were two very BAD turnovers.

I'm interested in seeing what Arnett, Burbridge, Sims Jr, etc. can do.

    • I'm glad MSU has depth at this position. I think Lippett will improve dramatically and end up being a top 3 WR for the Spartans. He has speed, seems to run good routes and gets open. His hands will improve.
