EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Spartan Tailgate breaks down an excruciatingly close 17-16 loss to Ohio State Saturday during Michigan State's Big Ten opener.

    • Tough to judge the offense today. Jackson's injury is a really significant one and he has been such a reliable presence at center over the past two seasons. Was going to be a tough day running even before that injury and I'm not surprised the Spartans struggled on the ground considering the injury.

The receivers took some steps forward but there were mistakes as well, and MSU just can't sustain drives right now.

    • The inability to put together a multi dimensional offensive attack is frustrating. Nice to see a passing game develop, but the failure of the O line to defend a passing attack and simultaneously support a running game is troublesome.

      rob

    • I feel 100% better about the passing game vs the one we saw against ND and Eastern. To me, this feels like the logical step forward we should have seen after we beat central.

I'm nervous about our inability to run the ball. Coach D is right, offense needs to be a balance.. we're not skilled enough in either run/pass to use it exclusively.

I think we win the next 2 weeks and send an even better passing attack into Ann Arbor with a chance to win there.

    • Why did the D line suck? Interior D line especially.

    • What we learned? Same shit.

    • This team is in desperate need of a game breaker. K-Mart is sorely missed.

    • What we learned:

      1) MSU always, always, always runs the ball on first down. I am sure OSU caught onto that in the first quarter and it never changed. If a casual fan can notice it, opposing coaches notice it. It's predictable and it does not work.

      2) All our offense knows to do in the air is 3 and 4 yard passes. Oh, it's 3rd and 7? Better pass it for three yards.

      Atrocious.

    • Dan, I felt the offense matured a lot today. Mumphrey's TD gave him a huge confidence boost. Maxwell was on target MOST of the day and really took some tough hits in the pocket. He will much tougher for it in my opinion. The big concerns were twofold. Lack of running game which will have to improve fast. Will be challenging because of injuries. Also DBs continue to get beat deep. Cost the game today sans the bad fumble ruling.

Funny, I read in another thread that every drive, it was 1st down: pass, 2nd down: run, 3rd down: pass... Some people think we always run on second down and some think we run on every first down. Yet all think we do the same thing and it's predictable. Interesting.

    • Frustrating. When receiver manages to get open, ball is behind, high, or 135 mph. When ball is on money, it still seems to be dropped. Mix in a OL that can't seem to keep pressure off Maxwell and it looks like a long season.

I guess there are going to be no hard decisions. I know we all aren't in the locker room or behind the scenes, but what is going on with Arnett? I noticed him in the field a handful of times yesterday at best. I guess we should accept the fact the Lippett, Mumphrey, and Fowler are the guys we are going to sink or swim with.

    • What we learned is that this is a 7-8 win football team and lacks what great football teams have - dominant OL and DLs.

I think help is on the way for the DL, the OL? Not so much...

    • There's a lot of negativity on this board right now and I'm suprised. This game was by far our best passing game and against what will be the hardest defense we face in the B1G. We had some drop passes...again they have to work on that, but the receivers came to play today.
Our run game wasn't effective because OSU was playing against the run on 1st abd 2nd down... 3rd and long=pass. Oline play has to get better but with a lot of injuries and guys banged up it will be a challenge throughout the season.
I didn't think Roushar called a bad game at all. We actually had chances to win this and it just didn't go our way.
If they improve and keep going out there and trying to improve... we will win a lot of games. So far we've lost 2 games. Both to ranked undefeated teams. We have a good team but it is going to take games like this for this team to become better.
I'm just tired of seeing the negativity and fair weather fans talking shit about this team after a really hard fought game. These guys tried their asses off to win this game and it really could have gone either.

Well said. I was disappointed at the loss, but I thought the team played ten times better than last week, or vs ND. This is still a good football team that can win a lot of games.

    • We've learned that we're a part of a 4-5 team upper tier in the B1G, rather than the best team.

      Shining Sparty

    • I learned that roushar has balls like raisins.

    • Did you learn anything about the MSU team when J. Allen gouged Johnathan Hankins eyes in the pile after a play (the undeniable video is online today)? Did you learn anything about MSU when your fans cheered Braxton Miller's near injuries? How about your fans chanting vile obscenities throughout the game -- teach you anything about MSU?

I've been attending Big10 football games since 1954. I've never seen anything to equal the vulgarity of Spartan Stadium. You're all embarrassed for losing, as usual, to Ohio State. You should be embarrassed by the conduct of MSU fans and Dantonio's cheapshot artists. Best Defense in the Big10? I don't think so. Worst Sportsmanship in the Big10? That's a lock.

    • You know it's always funny when OSU fans try to talk about morals or sportsmanship. Pryor to this comment (pun intended) I hadn't heard that this was out of the norm at most football games. Pussy

They should probably start winning all those games, or they'll have to wait until next season.

Yes, let's ignore the facts and substitute our own reality. Even if Hankins didn't initiate the exchange at the bottom of the pile (kinda funny how OSU and UM people seem to be able to miraculously cut film a certain way so it fits their own beliefs), that sort of thing happens damn near every play. You say that you've been going to games since 54, i call bull shit since anyone with half a brain or who actually lived through THAT TIME would know how common stuff like that is.

What the hell is a "near injury"? it seemed to me, the Ohio State guys were hitting our receivers kinda hard when they were trying to catch the ball. i see a lot of players get injured because they're hit hard while in defenseless positions, does that constitute as a "near injury"?

as for the obscenities, who the fuck cares? are we that big of a pussy society that we actually tell ourselves that some words are really mean and shouldn't be said? have you ever gone to a Wisconsin game? have you ever gone to a real football match? have you ever attended Michigan State? i would suggest you do all three before you input your opinion, because quite frankly as of now, no one gives a shit what you think. the fact that you have to go on to a rivals message board and spout off this drivel just shows how shitty your life really is.

and that was what exactly? that we should be embarrassed by our performance? don't worry, my life doesn't revolve around the 60 minutes my school plays on saturday and i could give two shits what others think. at the end of the day we're 3-2 with our own destiny still in our hands.

    • I learned the so called sunshine blowers continue to make excuses and attack the posters who are kinda mad that our receivers sort of suck and can't catch. I mean, Fowler catches that ball on the 5 yard line and MSU wins. He missed two catches in the red zone that cost us points and the game.
