Who Is Andrew Maxwell?

Andrew Maxwell

Getting used to celebrity status on campus is just one of the adjustments Maxwell faces this spring

With former backup QB Andrew Maxwell set to take over in 2012, Spartan Tailgate caught up with coaches, teammates and the man himself for a look at MSU's new signal-caller.

Figured we'd save all the really hard-hitting questions for this fall.

      Well played.

    • One thing Burkland said that I didn't include was "He's always been a leader to us." I think that's important to consider and something I've heard other players speak on as well. Players at other positions can afford to focus inward during redshirt years and take a step back to really watch and learn. There simply isn't much time for a quarterback to do that considering the amount of responsibility and the fact that those leadership qualities must develop early, and usually have somewhat at the high school level. But it sounds like Maxwell was above-average in that department at Midland and has continued there in East Lansing.

    • Good interview- this kid could end up being better than Captain Kirk and that will really be something. MSU= NFL QBU

If he plays as well or even slightly below Cousins' level this season the offense will be just fine with that front five. That's a big if, in my opinion, considering what Cousins did and the fact that there will certainly be some growing pains along the way. But unlike Cousins, Maxwell should have a great defense on his side as well. Definitely wasn't the case for Kirk his first season as a starter.

Can't wait for Kirk to sign with an NFL team. Last 3 QBs on NFL rosters is a great recruiting point.

    • Something I would like to throw in as well is everytime Kirk would come to the sidelines he was ALWAYS talking to Maxwell about what he saw and talking QB stuff...I know this happens probably everywhere but Kirk put in a ton of time helping Maxwell prepare too...

    • I have some friends from Midland and they know the family. I've talked to Maxwell a couple times after games and he's got amazing poise and confidence for a kid whose been a backup and about to inherit the keys to the kingdom.

      I'm not scurred.

I have no doubt that Maxwell will pitch the ball well...my concern is with our receivers...do they have the mental toughness to make the catch in all game situations?

Same here, but mostly they just wish Michigan had been interested in him.

    • Very well done, Dan. Really liked the way you laid that out and a very interesting read. Thoroughly enjoyed it!!

And I think we got a good one here in Andrew Maxwell. Seems like he has all the intangibles of Kirk Cousins, but maybe with better tangible skills. Here is hoping he can put it all together...

Woah now, I know it's Spring and I'm as psyched for next year as anyone, but saying that he as "all the intangibles of Kirk Cousins" is a bit much. Kirk was voted team captain as a Sophomore in the midst of a QB competition, and went on to be one of the very best leaders our program has ever seen. Even when he was struggling on the field, he was "the guy" in the locker room. I mean, did you watch the speech he gave at the B1G meetings?

Maxwell seems to have done everything possible to set himself up as a worthy heir to the legacy Cousins created. I'm excited to see him step into that spot and make it his own, but he has an awful lot to prove before we can even begin to compare him to Captain Kirk's intangibles.
