Screen size/width

  • Hey Trevor (or anyone else),

I'm having trouble viewing the entire width of messages on my laptop. It works fine on my desktop, but not on the laptop -- it cuts off halfway into the "reply" button, and I don't see any of the "vote" arrows, etc. Is there any way to fix this? I looked around for a bit but didn't see anything.

    TIA

  • One possible cause could be the "compatability mode" in IE8. If you are using IE8, make sure this option is turned off.

I realize I'm probably a complete idiot, but how do I know what IE edition I have? It's a relatively new Dell laptop (1-2 yrs old), and I run the old Windows XP (instead of Vista, which is what it would have come with).

Should I download Google Chrome and just use that? I used to use Firefox, but there's been some recent virus issues w/that.

Oh, I also tried changing the text size, but that didn't work. Sorry for all the questions.

I have no idea. I have IE7, a wide-screen Dell laptop, and I can't see a quarter of the damn screen posts. The advertisements come in great though.

  • I am using Chrome and I have the same problem. For me, a contributing factor is the font size. If I use the "normal" font size, the text is illegibly small. If I increase it, the message fields increase in size along with the font (they shouldn't) and the right most page elements are pushed off screen.

Basically, I think that the elements on the right should be anchored to the edge of the browser and the message fields should scale with the window size.

On a related note, is there any way to upload a custom CSS or even have alternate themes? The board is way to bright for easy reading.

Look at this pic. IE8 has an icon at the top of the browser that looks like a piece of paper that's been torn in half. This "compatibility mode" can cause a lot of issues. I don't know if this will fix your issue, but it's been known to cause problems before on other sites.

Unfortunately Chrome's "zoom" feature enlarges the entire website, not just the fonts, so that will cause the site to become too wide. Firefox renders this correctly if you want to try it out. I'd suggest Firefox, Chrome (if you keep the fonts the default size), or IE8 (not compatibility mode), or maybe even try out IE9 Beta:

If you could attach a screenshot of what's happening, and tell me what browser you're using, we'll try and fix any issues you're having.
