2013 Football Season Ticket Info

I have been a season ticket holder and have been to every home game since 1985. I need to have a serious talk with the wife about not renewing, I really do not know if it is worth the money any longer. We have six tickets in section 23, so the cost is quite high.

I have always said that I buy season tickets primarily to support the program, not because they make financial sense. That said, I think over the last 25+ years I have done my part.

We've had ours in the family since the 60s and there has been serious discussion about not renewing them. I just had a son so I want to carry on the tradition with him which is why we are keeping them, but I would suspect Hollis and the Athletic Department have a problem on their hands if gas is still $3.60 and we have a 6-6 team.

You know what, I'm going to do something you don't see around here to often....I'm going to say you are absolutely right. You made me see the light - my arguments don't make any sense. I want to see a top program year in and year out, and the only way to do that is to help the AD financially and I realize I should buy the season tickets regardless of schedule. I apologize for my momentary lack of being a good fan!

That said, still may be hard to do this year b/c I have to pay for the stupid yard for the house we're building - or should I just leave it dirt, and tell the neighbors I wanted to create an Arizona-type atmosphere?

So, these are the choices in your life?

A yard for the house you're building or season tickets for football?

Are you an accountant or a financial advisor?

  • Some may have legit reasons to drop season tickets, but anyone who takes that route has no business then complaining about the need for staff raises, new facilities, better opponents (which translates into fewer home games), warmer weather or better halftime shows. MSU tickets are not cheap, but they are not priced as if the team has won 10 games a year for decades either. If you want to drink champagne, a beer budget doesn't cut it and support through season tickets is a big part of the program's success.

The bottom line is...people are jumping off the bandwagon.

I tell it like it is.

  • I'm renewing mine. Had them for 15 years and will keep buying them. I may go from 4 to 2 based on the fact that my kids have games now almost every Saturday and I miss a lot of games..... I do this this is the prefect storm brewing for athletics in terms of lost revenue. MSU is very tight all around and the University keep pinching them for more as well. I guess I don't want to be a small part of that storm. Who knows. Let's hope we go 11-1 and all is good and people are paying face value plus for tix...

  • I'm going to keep mine for now.. But it is tempting to do stubhub all next year and save a bunch of $..

It's also a good idea to keep them for the years when we have bama, oregon, boise and miami at home coming up.. Esp if our program enjoys continued success.

    It was inevitable.

You have your strong base of season ticket holders that has bought tickets through BW and JLS.

You saw an influx of "fairweather" season ticket holders this past year. At some point they would see something that would justify in their minds that season tickets were no longer worth it to them.
Its the revolving bandwagon. (Roushar, bad schedule, etc. It could be anything.)

Just don't know how someone who is not willing to get season tickets (or if not local, at least donate some chedda) can complain about our facilities and coaching salaries by comparing them to that of programs that have a whole hell of a lot more season ticket holders/donations, with presumably higher priced tickets. You are part of the reason for the disparity.

    Potato Cakes

  • Ill renew mine (not sure if ill stick to my current 4 or drop to 2) simply for the fact of supporting the program as many of you have mentioned. I want to see MSU football elevated to the level MSU Basketball is nationally.

Having said that there is no doubt financially it is a horrible decision this year.

  • There are 50 reasons to drop your tickets the next 2 years but let me give you a good one to keep them.

There will be so many people dropping seats that during the relocation process, if you are unhappy with your seat location and have any kind of donor level at all, you will be able to greatly improve your quality of seat.

And pay for it via seat donation fees.

Save for a very few seats, you could have gotten anything you wanted last year. I did the seat selection and I was one of the last to get the chance. I could have had 2 in the $500 section without any problem. The $25 section ones were the hard ones to find actually.

I actually meant that you could move down within the same section/donation level but yes you will be able to get seats wherever you want, more expensive, less expensive...

  • There are going to be so many unsold tickets that the usual Friday before a Sat. game ticket release will be a bonanza for those without tickets.

I like games that I can buy a ticket for $10 or less as it will allow me to leave at halftime to go out to the car for another beer and smoke. Seems like there will be a lot of halftime trips next year.

I discovered that trick last year and it was awesome.

Yeah, but you still have to pay face. lol Who wants to pay 50 bucks for Youngstown State or 80 bucks for Indiana?

Wouldn't be surprised to see the mini plans where you get can Michigan tickets for face but have to buy a couple of the crappy games at face along with them

At least Michigan State is now partnered with StubHub so getting rid of our season tickets will be easier than in prior years. Having the luxury to sell them up until the last second now will help the cause of just throwing my tickets away. MSU's ticket marketplace last season was a total joke. I had tickets (40 yard line) for EMU listed for $10 and they didn't even sell.

  • lol Can't wait to see some of you people when we're in a division with Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin and play Michigan or Ohio State on the road for our crossover (let alone the times we get Rutgers, Indiana or Purdue at home for the other crossover)

The new East/West divisions are going to make MSU football schedules pretty shitty unless Iowa gets good again (unlikely) or Northwestern is winning 9-10 games consistently (ha). Get used to it or hope Hollis keeps bringing in Oregon, Alabama and Miami every other year for the next 20 years. As long as MSU can continue to recruit PA and Tidewater areas, the West will be the easier division to play in... but for the Big Ten football fan the West Division is a terrible proposition. Keeping Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State in one division is just an awful, awful idea.

  • Winning puts people in the seats. Losing makes them whine and bitch.
I think if we went 10-2 or better last year with a big ten title people would see this announcement and be jacked for football to start.
Having a down year after the hype people want to get critical of the opponents on the schedule.

    I'm renewing.

    That sums it up.

Sorry. All you guys who had season tickets the last couple of years (or just last year) and are not renewing them this year because of "the schedule" are...

    BANDWAGON FANS.

My guess is that you (outside of possibly someone in the ticket office) would be most qualified to answer this question:

What percentage of MSU football season tickets are purchased by people in your business?

I assume the amount may vary widely and I am only looking for a rough estimate. No reason other than to satisfy my curiosity and it does seem to come up around here for discussion from time to time.

Is a game on November 1st that different than a game being in October?

That game should be an $80 ticket. Tailgating while watching the walk of shame on the day after Halloween more than justifies the cost of the ticket...

  • Have had season tickets since the 1990 season. There have been some pretty crappy seasons in that time frame, and some mediocre schedules, but I have always ponied up.

We want to have a first class product on the field, and the only way that happens is if we continue to support our team. Money is tight for most of us and we all have to prioritize where our money is dispersed, but I personally get so much enjoyment out of that football Saturday. I would miss the experience more than I would miss the money.

  • I would say last year brokers may have had 2% of Spartan Stadium but this year it will drop to less than 1%.

The yard is not a choice. The tickets are a choice based on affordability. Don't need an accountant to figure that out.

There's not a ton of $ in it for brokers with this years schedule. The only potential big $ game is obviously UM. That game isn't til late and unless both teams are positioned to win the division, the $ won't be there to make up for the rest of the games.. Esp once you consider the seat license fees.
