2013 NFL Combine Thread

  • Weigh ins have started.

    Dion Sims - 6'4.7 262 lbs
    33 1/8" arms

He's certainly dropped a lot of weight for the combine.

  • Would have been nice if he could have done that 3 years ago.

    Buffalo Spartan

  • Nice, I wonder what time he runs, honestly, that's about 20 pounds lighter than he played at, would surprise me if he was in the low 4.6s.

Would love nothing more than to see he and Gholston blow up at the combine and climb draft boards all over. Both have 1st round physical skills.

I hope my bears take him in the 2nd instead of taking the ND or Stanford TE's like every mock draft is showing. Then they can blow their 1st on a OT who will be a bust.

  • Anyone else weigh in yet? I still can't believe ARW didn't receive an invitation.

  • True RE: Sims needing to drop weight sooner. But, his sole priority after football season has been purely to workout and get ready for the combine. He doesn't have to deal with being a student athlete anymore.

ARW didn't have that great of a year

After the bowl game against Georgia I had high expectations for him but I can't recall a game this past year where he had a huge impact

  • Sims measuring in with some big hands, 10.5", second biggest hand size for TEs behind UCLA's Joseph Fauria.

    Macks

  • Eric Fisher and DJ Fluker also helping themselves out. Fluker down to 339lbs after playing at over 350. Measuring in at 6'5 and has very long 36.75" arms. Eric Fisher showing solid LT potential at just over 6'7, 306lbs with 34.5" arms.

    Macks

  • Mike Glennon (QB - NC State) making himself some money by measuring in at a legit 6'7 225lbs.

Apparently teams want to look at Collin Klein as a TE.

    Le'Veon Bell measures in at 6'1 230lbs.

    Denard Robinson 5'11 199lbs.

  • Bell is going to run waaay faster than people think. The kid is an explosive athlete.

Also gonna do well in bench press and vertical (for his size).

I think Bell's faster than most people make him out to be, especially if he's slimmed down to 230. However, I get the feeling that his lumbering gait makes him look slower.

    Maybe coaches wanted him heavier?

  • read a quote from Mike Mayock re: Bell. Said he doesn't "play big enough". Thought that was interesting, as I often that he played bigger than he is.

No, I somewhat agree. Bell is a big back but he doesn't always play like one. Which can be both good and bad in certain situations. There have been times when he's tried to dance around too much instead of just powering through a defender or hole. All in all though I like having his spin move/stutter step as an option. In the NFL that likely won't work as much which is why GMs will probably want him to do what he's supposed to - lower his pads and drive through a defender.

  • Tyler Wilson (QB - Arkansas) with the smallest hands out of all QBs, 8.68".

EJ Manuel from FSU and Matt Barkley from USC with some of the bigger hands at 10"+.

Really? I don't agree at all. Yes there are times that he could lower his shoulder instead of making a move, but at what cost? You would rather him gain 1-2 extra yards instead of trying to gain an extra 7-10? Its not like when we got stuffed in short yardage situations it was because he was dancing around. Hell,he led the NCAA in yards after contact so he obviously knows how to fight through a tackle. If he doesn't "run as big as he is" then what Mayock is saying is that he thinks he should run like a fullback. I'd like Mayock to name a successful RB that runs "bigger" than Bell does. If anything, his vision and agility is what will make him a successful NFL RB, not his ability to run over NFL LBs.

I think that's the point though, in the NFL teams are going to want him to lower his shoulder because NFL defenses are so much bigger, stronger, and faster. I personally like the way he runs right now but it's legitimate concern that the moves that made him so good in college won't be as effective in the NFL, so Mayock was basically trying to say that he needs to stick to being a big power back, and not a tweener.

  • Bench presses coming for OL.

DJ Fluker - 21 (shockingly low)
Jonathan Cooper - 35 (really helping himself so far)
    Eric Fisher - 27

With arms that long, that is not shocking to me. The bench press favors the short armed guys a lot.

    True.

That's bad news from Wisconsin OG/C Travis Frederick though, with the same arm length as Cooper he only put up 21 reps.

But the point is that there aren't NFL RBs that are successful that just lower their shoulder every play. The reason for that is the size of NFL defenders. Bell's size advantage will be neutralized more in the NFL than his vision/agility will be, so to say that he doesn't play big enough is inaccurate in my mind. When Bell needed to run over someone to get a yard or two, he did it (unless the o-line imploded in short yardage). But why, on first and 10, should he run over one guy just to gain 3 yards instead of two when he has just as good a chance of picking up 8 yards if he spins or jukes the guy? Look, Bell has weaknesses, but for Mayock to say one of them is not using his size just makes me think that he was watching edited clips without any knowledge of the situation.

  • Dion Sims ties for third in bench press with 22 reps.

    Didn't catch his vertical.

About to start running 40 yard dashes.
