One of the most powerful that I have every seen.

I wasn't even 10 at the time. Remember seeing video on NBC Nightly News way back then...never forgot it. Pretty sure CBS and ABC also showed it. Still can't believe any of the networks played it

In simplest terms, a captured Viet Cong member is executed by a Colonel of the Vietnamese army in street after interrogation to make a point. An American photographer was with them and didn't know it was going to happen when he was taking the photo.

    Colonel Nguyễn Ngọc Loan http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?131040-Famous-VC-Execution-(Warning-Graphic-Pic)

"What never caught up with the impact of the picture was the fact that in the first hours of the Tet Offensive before Loan shot the man, Vietcong had beheaded a Vietnamese colonel and killed his wife and six children."

It has also been reported that the man shot was a sniper that had killed a number of U.S. and ARVN soldiers before being captured. Yet, for some reason that is almost never mentioned.

That probably about right for me too, and why it has always stuck with me. The video just looked like they were taking him to jail. Loan starts talking to some people, then so nonchalantly turns an executes the Vietcong. There were a lot of pictures coming back from the war that were pretty shocking, but seeing the video really brought it home for a young kid.

36 really gets me out of that list. I agree with the poster who put the picture of the flag at Iwo Jima, to me that is the most iconic picture ever.

If you're from Britain or Canada or any other country do you think it would be moving? Personally, I think it is moving for Americans, but if you were from another country, it's just another American war picture.

  • There really were some that had no business being off the list. Kent state, burning monk, and VE kiss. #36 however was absolutely brutal. The Horace Greasley photo got me about 45 minutes of search time. What a story.

  • Here's a disgusting part of our history that was captured in a horrific photo. It's pretty bad so I won't post the pic here.

What's the story behind this picture? Excuse my ignorance.

Supposedly, the guy was a North Vietnam collaborator. The South Vietnam general gathered a bunch of news people to show off/prove he was a badass, and executed the dude right there on the spot. The image is as close to the exact moment of the bullet going through the guys head as possible. What's really powerful is to see the film of it. The general waved the gun around a little and plugged the guy. He dropped like a rock. An execution for entertainment value--there was so much wrong with that war....

What year/years were you over there. Entertainment value? The guy was a VC spy and the General was also the Police Chief. The spy played a part in the beheading and execution of a VN Col. who was a friend of the the Gen.(as I remember). Somebody that does that to a friend and family of mine then give me the gun. By the way I was over there 69,70,71. By the way I'll agree with the last part "there was so much wrong with that war..."

The one with the starving African baby next to a vulture is also scary.

On Mobil I wasnt paying close attention to what link I was opening. Realized a second too late what pic it was almost looked at it again. I cannot look at that pic again in my lifetime. Haunting and disturbing do not even begin to describe that picture.

The description mentioned that 3 months after the guy took the photo, he killed himself. It mentions that the fate of the boy is unknown and i wonder if the photographer's eventual demise is linked to him knowing the boy's fate after possibly not helping him... The photo getting such recognition probably just made everything worse for the guy.

Anyways, i don't know how to find it but i've seen it around the web, but one that really gets to me are these two photos that go together. The first one is of a US soldier trying to pull a dead or wounded comrade to safety and the next photo is both of them just laying there.

I'm not going to look but earlier someone linked a video referencing the vulture pic. I think it's a story about the photographer killing himself.
