He doesn't have a running mate like the 2 guards LIU had. MSU's defensive problems in that game was due to the fact LIU had too quick guards driving the lane with little or no fear. LIU did a good job exploiting matchups because of this. Louisville doesn't have the luxury.

LIU had the 2nd or 3rd ranked scoring offenses in all of DIV 1 basketball because they were used to playing off these matchups. Louisville had a terrible offenses because they lack options to take advantage of multiple attacking guards like LIU did.

UL also has a much better defense and can make up for their poor shooting with transition baskets.

I think MSU wins, but this should be a tough game. Actually should be fun from here-on out; nothing but strong teams left on our half of the bracket.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Siva is not a true point. In fact, his HS rankings fell after his sophomore year when he started playing the point in AAU. The concensus at the time was he wasn't a 1 or 2/ Having watched him since he was a sophomore I am very impressed with how well he's transitioned to the PG position. The kid is ridiculously athletic and very good defensively but Appling is the far superior point guard. Will be an interesting match-up.

    Oh yea, he's like 5'10 1/2 170. Then again, Appling's probably really 6'0 185 lol

I actually don't think it'll be all that close. Not do to lack of respect, more do the fact that I've seen about 6 Louisville games and they've all seemed really mediocre in all of them...even their D, and especially on Offenese.

They (the entire Big East actually in my opinion) just don't close on the ball/shooter as quickly as generally teams in the B1G or ACC do. The offenses Louisville seems to have posted their stats against have seemed incredibly unorganized... Especially Syracuse, Cincy, and UCONN.

Their offensive stats back up my eyes when they tell me they are mediocre. I think this game is going to be like playing Iowa...though Iowa has a few better shooters.

I think that's a fair assessment, though UL has a better D than Iowa.

I don't get the "UL is way more athletic than MSU". I also don't see the "length" argument. I see a small, quick PG, a walk-on 2 guard, a 6'4 SF and 6'6 250 pound PF and a 6'11 235 solid Big man.

    Seriously, UL's starters are listed at 6'0, 6'2, 6'4, 6'6 and 6'11.

    MSU's go 6'1, 6'2, 6'5, 6'7, 6'11.

    Am I missing something here?

For all their talk of playing in the "BEAST" this year (I hate that way of saying the Big East), there's no doubt that the Big 10 was tougher and deeper. I remember when State played Pitt a few years back and there was talk about how Pitt was the toughest Big East team and would be the "toughest" opponent MSU would face as far as physicality.

MSU crushed them from a physicality standpoint.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Siva is the type of guy that can look amazing when his assinine shots go in, but also looks a fool a lot of the time to with his turnovers and horrendous shooting.

He can be taken to the rack extremely easy, he is a smurf. Appling should drive on him all day.

That'd be a great move. If he gets in foul trouble, their O goes from "meh" to "horrendous".

For this reason alone, State by 11.

  • To try and temper the outrage concerning Siva's publicity ratings, he was hurt pretty much all season. He's not now. I hope this helps.

People don't make stories up about a guy's speed based on some myth with no merit. For the record, you now have to contend with a few analysts, namely Bilas and Hubert Davis, saying he is the fastest guard in America. Isn't that outrageous? No way this can be true! blank

He began the year with a concussion, sat out 5 games, then hurt his ankle. He did not want to sit and Rick agreed, so it probably took longer to heal. But those injuries were mild compared to the rest. He still practices in a helmet, lol, along with two other guys.

Appling won't "drive on him all day". I hope he does, as a UofL fan.

He actually has an earned pedigree. Peyton led the Big east in steals last season. I realize you guys consider that a lame conference but Peyton outplayed Kemba in every category the 3 games they played - except we went 2-1, losing the Finals during Kemba's run.

I don't think the Big East is a "Lame" conference. I just consider it beneath the Big 10 in terms of physicality, and this season, in terms of overall play. Watch your championship game against Cincy and then watch the Big 10 tournament final between MSU and Ohio State. The difference in the level of basketball is tangible.

In your defense, I'm sure a Syracuse - Marquette final would have been much better for the Big East. Then again, you wouldn't be in our bracket if that happened.

I've got a lot of respect for Pitino and Louisville and MSU is not without flaws. If Siva drops 15 - 6 assists and 5 steals on MSU, then things probably won't end particularly well for MSU. Then again, if he also turns the ball over 5 times, it may not matter. Appling's a good on-ball defender.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Appling is all of those things plus he shoots the ball better.

Fair enough, but I would not underate Siva--he has been very important for them.

    PassTheRock

  • people are overlooking the biggest x-factor tonight - Kyle Kuric. Best 3 point shooter and has developed his game to be able to drive. He missed the first game against Marquette and L-ville lost by double digits. He was healthy and they beat Marquette by double digits. He likes to shoot from the corner too which seems to occasionally be the weak spot in MSU's defense.

I can't begin to tell you how disappointing to see this debate become public over here. My take is I am just glad the argument is not over whether it's Siva-as-hallucinogen versus Siva-as-Justin Bieber. I think you can sympathize from my end.

I never said Appling will or could drive on him all day, I am saying he should because with his lack of size it's easy to pas on him and shoot over him.

On the other hand, he can get steals and if we are lazy with the ball MSU is in trouble.

Ville's halfcourt offense is really bad, and if MSU limits turnovers I really don't see Ville winning unless some guy on your team gets super hot.

Dude, look at this stats. Siva is fast as hell, but not much else. Turnover machine, terrible size, and can't shoot.

Sometimes he looks awesome with his dribble drives and/or when he throw up prayers go in. The dude is just so inconsistent.

He didn't have a great game against New Mexico, so maybe he's due to go off? That's the scary thing about inconsistent players; they're bound to break out of slumps and really go off.
