A Game of Thrones: For People Who Have Read the Books SPOILERS

  • I just started reading a Game of Thrones about a week ago because I wanted to read the book before the series started on HBO. I didn't really think it was going to be by thing because I'm not really a fantasy reader. I was totally wrong. I'm about haf way through the book and the thing is amazing. At this rate, I'm thinking I might be done with all of the entries in the series by the time the show starts in April.

  • Halfway through? I envy you. So many good words lie in your future and you've not had to endure the years long waits between books---yet. Great series, I just hope he lives long enough to complete it.

Agreed. Wouldn't want what happened to Robert Jordan to happen here. I haven't read either books released since his death, but I can't imagine they are good.

Back on topic - Martin is a great writer. I know several people who have never read a fantasy book and fell in love with the series

And yet, they found an amazing (and prolific) replacement for Jordan. I'd argue WoT's five best books go: Eye of the World, The Great Hunt, A The Gathering Storm, Knife of Dreams, Towers of Midnight.

  • Great writer and story; just don't get too attached to any of the characters. lol

I haven't read any of the post-Jordan books yet either... I may wait until they're all done and check out the reviews first.

It's not enough to bash in heads, you have to bash in minds.

Yea, got Towers of Midnight for Christmas. I'm on page 557 already. The Gathering Storm was pretty good, in that Jordan did too much meandering in books 8-10 and tGS really tied up loose ends.

Towers of Midnight is fantastic so far, and seems much more "Jordan-esque", whereas tGS (still a great book) had the feel of Sanderson feeling out Jordan's style.

Thanks to Misterray's suggestion, I got the first 2 books in the Game of Thrones series for X-mas. Gotta finish the WoT book first though (started reading them in 1995!) . Can't wait for the HBO series to come out though.

In terms of WOT books, I really enjoyed The Shadow Rising and Fires of Heaven. Tons of action there after a relatively boring The Dragon Reborn.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Yeah, it's pretty nice that I got to dodge the gaps that everyone else had to deal with. I'm sure I'll have to put up with a couple pretty big ones after book 5 actually comes out though.

I'm hoping that the HBO series is successful and that as the seasons begin to catch up with the books, Martin decides that he'd better wrap things up so that the series writers don't just concoct an ending to the story for him when they run out of material.

From what you've told me about the series, I think this is something we all should hope for!

I'm excited to find a new series to get into as tWOT will be done in the next year and a half/2 years. I still can't believe it's almost over.

If you're ever interested in another series, check out Steven Erikson. I've been reading the Malazan: Book of the Fallen series for a couple years now and I like it more than I did tWOT.

  • I picked up "A Game of Thrones" recently as well in a bargain bin but haven't had a chance to read it yet. The series premieres in April, so I hope to find the time to read this beast of an epic.

Will the tv show's first season cover events in the first novel only?

I would also recommend Erickson. I'm a fan of WOT and GOT, I read the first Malazan book over Thanksgiving, and plan to start book 2 soon. Can't wait.

I am afraid that the whole world is closer to moral foreclosure.

Yeah, each season of the show will cover one book. So you don't have to read the whole series by April. You only need to make it through 800 pages or so...

  • According to /film, the show is going to premier on April 17. Here's hoping that we get more than one season...

  • Dr.K,

Great books! You might want to check out www.towerofthehand.com and westeros.com.

Tower of the Hand has a great encyclopedia if you start to get lost.

I'm hoping the next book will be announced as finished when the HBO series comes out.

Thanks! I've been kind of nervous to check out any sites about the series since I haven't finished reading it yet. I'm about half way through with the second book and really want to avoid any spoilers. That's why I'm glad the first season of the show will only cover the material from the first book. At the rate I'm going right now though, I will probably be done with the series by the time the show starts.

  • I agree, George RR Martin is a great author, but the wait between books is absolutely killing me. Thank god for the HBO series coming out or else I would never be able to make it.

I am also for the Erikson vote, I have read the first 5 books in the past couple months and am absolutely loving it. Not sure if these books are set to allow it, but I know you can lend books through the kindle now so if anyone wants to borrow some of these books (either Martin or Erikson, although I have a ton of others as well) I would be happy to trade some books back and forth.

Agreed... in the thread about this on the old board I said the same thing. Erikson's stuff is fantastic, and if you like A Song of Ice and Fire, I would be willing to bet you will really get into the Malazan stuff too.

It just occurred to me... I wonder just how much pressure Martin's publisher is bringing to bear on him. It certain that they'd love to come out with the next book either before or during the HBO series broadcast in order to generate some buzz and synergy.

Yeah, the rumor is that there will at least be a publishing date set during the first season. Until Martin says something though, I won't get my hopes up.

On another note, I was real tempted to down-vote you just for using the word synergy, but you seem like an alright guy otherwise so I gave you a pass.

  • Thinking about filling up my e-reader with one of these two series... Which would be better to start from scratch at this point?

  • Ooh, thank you for reminding me that the HBO series is coming out soon! I need to re-read the series as well, its been a few years since I've read the books.

also for the discussion of tWoT series...now that makes me want to re-start these too! I left off on the 9th or 10th book & haven't read any of the series in a few years as well. Will have to pick these up as well...I personally like tWoT series more than Song of Ice and Fire, but that's cuz it has more of the fantasy-type element, which is my favorite genre. :)

  • Here's the most recent trailer for the HBO series. In response to the post about loading up the e-reader, All of the Song of Ice and Fire books are pretty cheap on the Kindle right now. I think they're about 5 bucks each.

Will there be boobs, and if so how much?

Like I said above, I have all of the GoT books and most of the Erikson books on my Kindle so I haven't checked yet, but if they are shareable I would be happy to share them with you. Just let me know.
