Victarion has really grown on me and is now one of my favorite characters. I find him hilarious for some strange reason. He has zero tact or any use for shenanigans to get what he wants. He just goes out and gets it. I also found the vision of him sailing across the sea with a group of monkeys infesting the rigging of his ships funny as well. What is going on with his hand is interesting though. Makes me wonder if Mel can pull the same type of stunt with Jon's wounds at the Wall.
Regarding Rhillor and The Other. I dont think good/evil are the right words to describe them. Some have said on other forums that they might be different sides of the same coin. I feel they are some of both, just like the characters in the series (Jaime is a scumbag, but is now trying to do good things; Ned is noble to a fault; Dany is good-hearted but naive, etc.).

Good point on the Mel and Jon Snow. His death was sudden and given that only he and a few others (Samwell, Master Builder and First Ranger etc..) really understood the threat to the realm from beyond the wall his death might lead to the complete collapse of the north. Which may very well be the plot for the next book, who knows. Just get it edited and to print ASAP.

I just re read the epilogue and I'm firmly convinced he's warged into Ghost. Tons of clues by Varamyrr Six Skins about how warging works. Remember that Mel told Jon to always have Ghost close to him. And his human body can be preserved in the wall with all of that meat and not degrade. Also the wolf's name is "Ghost", perfect for a dead man.
My new crackpot theory:
Now that Jon is "dead" a new Lord Commander can be chosen, then will die and Stannis can be the 1000th lord commander of the Night Watch after Dany defeats him and he takes the black.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

A warged Jon Snow is just, I don't know . . . . lame. I really wanted him to go toe to toe with the Bastard of Bolton.
Then again, maybe Ghost goes there and tears Ramsay's face off. That would be acceptable.

-Interesting theory I just read about Jon Snow and his parentage (and no way is he dead). There are fans out there who think that Eddard Stark isn't his father, but rather he is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. It was never said why Rhaegar "took" Lyanna, why she was confined to the Tower of Joy and protected by 3 of Aerys loyalist Kingsguard, or what promise she made to Ned with her dying breath. It was said that Eddard found Lyanna dying in a "bed of blood" before her last words to him were "Promise me Ned." Perhaps she died in childbirth? Jon Snow's age would be about in line with that timeline. The only person still alive who was there was Howland Reed, who was the only other survivor of the battle along with Ned. The secret promise that Ned kept has to come up yet in some capacity.

I am a fan of the show and I attend church every week being a practicing Catholic (I know to some Fundamentalists that doesn't make me a Christian but that is another conversation for another day). This show has no bearing on my faith. I don't know why it would. I am not going to go cast spells because people do that on the Game of Thrones. Apparently saying the Lord's prayer and the Nicene Creed every week is not enough and Game of Thrones is threatening that.
Come on.

Much props to whoever earlier ITT pointed out the Malazan series of books to me as being similar and awesome. After finishing the first one recently ill second the recommendation if anyone is looking for a series to read.

Question for those who've read the Song of Ice and Fire series:
I blew through the first season of the HBO show in about a week, and absolutely loved it. I have not, however, read the first book. I just downloaded A Clash of Kings last night, but am unsure if I should start reading it when I only have the TV show to go on. From what I've read here and elsewhere on the net, the first season is pretty close to the book, but there are some minor (sometimes literally, heh) differences. Am I ok diving into Clash of Kings, or should I go back and read the first book beforehand?
