A Little Rare Boise State News

  • Their OL is decimated and they will be breaking in a new QB who has to start his first game at Spartan Stadium at a night game season opener with Gholston, Bullough, Allen, White, Rush all waiting to break him to pieces. He also has to try to fit passes where Adams, Lewis and Dennard cannot get at them.

    Good luck, son.

  • Boise will have a good team next year. They have depth and talent. They will win a lot of games. MSU better be ready.

Having said that, I think the Spartan faithful have been looking forward to this game since it was announced. I expect a Wisconsin 2011 atmosphere in the stadium. We will be celebrating 2 eleven win seasons and entering a season with high expectations. This team maybe better than those if Maxwell performs and Coach D keeps them grounded.

But more importantly where Boise is going to have multiple groups getting their act together, albeit with talent, MSU is solid in their core, lines~linebackers~DB's. Questions at WR, absolutely. QB overly experienced, no. But a defense that is going to feed on the crowd. A defense that is going to be....

I like Boise. I put Chris Peterson right there with Coach D, but we have the horses, experience and home field. MSU 42 Boise 17.

No disrespect and I may not want to have a rematch in a bowl game. Boise will be a top 20 team at the end of the season, but early, at home, if we are as hungry as I think we will be....Victory for MSU.

BSUFan9999, your team kicks butt often, just don't see it happening in EL. Thanks for playing

  • I feel like this game will be uncomfortably close until the 4th quarter.

I hope we Alabama 'em but I am not expecting even kind of that.

I had thought that too...but read the OL link on page 1. They have talent there. They have major talent at WR. They have real talent at QB.

But after that....no DL, bad LBs...

6'5" 201 at TE? Gholston, Rush and Denicos Allen are going to eat him alive if they try to use him to block

That's like Austin Thornton trying to block Big Will. Lol

  • I remember Gholston looking over at the Ohio State sidelines - at Ohio State - flexing his arms and pecs while lining up - and laughing at them - taunting Ohio State. He ran them right over. I think we'll be OK.

FYI: Gholston is the gigantic super fast guy who keeps trying to pile drive your QB into the center of the Earth.

  • I don't think Boise will be Boise of the last few years this year. I think they will be on a mid to high level Big East team, Louisville/Rutgers/Pitt-esque.

Running backs. Have a new starter who they are comfortable with, has a career average of 5.2 per carry, but had 4.8 last year, is a 6th year senior. The back-ups all suck... no quality depth.

Doug Martin who is expected to be the 2nd RB taken in the draft after Trent Richardson couldn't beat DJ Harper for snaps for the 1st half of his career. Martin had been moved to linebacker to get him on the field. After 2 ACL tears by Harper, Martin returned to the offense and the rest is history.

Harper is an outstanding back who has made big plays consistently while sharing the role.

While the current back-ups are no names, we will a redshirt freshman and 2 new recruits - all from Texas - available to us. Oregon tried to steal both our new RB recruits (Fields and Demas) before signing day. That should give you a sense of their talent given the talent they have showcased in their backfield the last few years.

We will be just fine at RB.

Look, I think MSU should be favored to win this game. I think the line should be 7 points based on being at home and returning an outstanding defense.

Any MSU fan that thinks BSU doesn't have a chance in this one... sounds awfully similar to others we have played before. BSU fans understand we absolutely have a chance. Our staff does a phenomenal job preparing largely unheralded players to execute flawlessly at the highest level.

And to the poster that says Petersen can't manage to match-ups that favor his players' strengths...the guy is 73-6 and the #1 target on coaching searches from Florida to Penn St. to UCLA for a reason.

Here is my call. MD enjoys the trickeration. Given BSU's reputation, I bet he tries to out trick Petersen who in a way set the standard in that Fiesta Bowl. I expect MD to open the playbook up a bit.

Look, If Boise State was a non-legitimate contender from a crap division, then we wouldn't have the excitement to play them as we do.

Boise State has been on MSU's level for some time now, lets not forget that we ourselves have been an under-appreciated team lately as well. The difference is our conference is lightyears better than theirs, this is true. But they are the class of their conference year in year our, and Vargman laughing at TCU is out of line as both TCU and Boise State would be solid B1G teams if they were in our conference. They surely wouldn't easily run the table year in and out like they do, but they'd be in the contest for B1G champion those years for sure.

That being said, Kellen Moore is long gone, and Titus Young plays in our home NFL team Detroit, so we can see on Sunday's that BSU is definitely more than a joke. I understand BSU is a lot more than just those two players, but I'm jus sayin. I believe next season specifically, MSU has the better team, and we have home field, and I do think we will win. But my main point in posting this here is this: lets give this BSU fan the respect that he deserves. His team has gotten screwed over more than we have experience with. His team has been a top 10 power, for a few years now, and has not even been given the opportunity to fail in a big game. That has to be the pinnacle of frustration. He's been fair, and has even said he thinks we should be favorites. But don't forget, they are a legitimate contender, and should be taken very seriously.

Boise State has been screwed over by the very flawed system we play in in recent years more than any other college in the nation. Would they get run by Alabama or such if they had the chance to play in the title game? Most likely yes. Would they lose to the team that unfairly jumped them to take the #2 spot to play for the title? Most likely yes. But a team like theirs going undefeated as they have surely deserves the chance to play for it! Anything can happen in a game, and as he said, lets not forget how they pulled out all the stops to beat Oklahoma. Lets not forget we (sans players) got run by Alabama recently in a bowl game as well. This should be a good and legitimate matchup. I think we win. But lets not forget how formidable this opponent has been lately. Bottom line: I am excited to watch this game.

This guy was a first-team frosh AA, set bunch of bsu frosh records...and he's only set to be their #2 target. 6'3, 218, great size. Good thing their TEs and RB depth sucks...

We have no worries at TE or RB.

Miller is a stud who turned down SEC offers to stay close to home.

Not sure how returning 9 players who have started games is a decimated OL. We lost only 1 to graduation.

  • All this is well and they may be a tough opponent but we really know that they are no Appy. State, just sayin.

  • BSU is loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball. Yes, much of it inexperienced, but the talent is there. They have an oustanding head coach that will put together a game plan that will take the pressure off of their QB. They have a slight advantage in this regard I think. BSU knows what the MSU defense is going to do, and will be ready for it. Much of the personnel is the same for the MSU defense, and the schemes are not likely to change much (some different wrinkles, yes, but nothing too much in terms of scheme). MSU doesn't have the advantage of seeing the new Boise QB and what they want to do offensively with him. Scheme wise, we can have a decent idea. This is going to be a tight game. Predictions of 42-17 are laughable. Boise is not a finesse team. They can play some smash mouth, and most importantly, will not be intimidated in the atmosphere. It is going to be a good one.

  • Most teams have questions coming into the season. From the BSU point of view, our biggest questions are:

    * Which QB will reload for BSU and how much of a drop off will there be?
    * Can we find some consistency at the placekicking position?
    * Who will be the next generation at the safety positions?
    * How much of a drop-off will we have in the defensive line after losing the starting Dline to the NFL?

Otherwise, BSU fans feel pretty good. Our depth has been increasing. On paper, our recruits of the last several years are on an uptick and have never been better.

    BSUFAN9999

  • People in here who are talking about us dominating them and owning them are crazy. When was the last time BSU got blown out in one of these games? They play everyone tough and usually win. We're going to have to bring our A game if we want to win.

East Lansing. Night game. The atmosphere will be crazy.

Usually Boise State plays these games in neutral environments -- granted the "neutral" environments are closer to their opponents, but being on campus with a rowdy environment like at MSU makes this a very different game.

Those sites were neutral in name only. Take a look at the opening of the Va Tech Youtube video on the last page and you will see very, very quickly....they had 88,000 fans there. Playing Georgia in Atlanta is not quite neutral either.

    BSUFAN9999

  • I think the whole "Expect alot of trickeration from MD" would probably be the case if we were playing Boise anything BUT the first game of the season. As is I would imagine he would probably like to see us move the ball well and consistently without having to do that.

But obviously if it's a very tight game in the second half I could see him pulling out all the stops.

What you are going to have to realize on this board is that the casual fan here does not respect Boise as much as they should. However, people who know the sport recognize Boise is high quality, and the game is going to be a dogfight. Boise has played at UGA, at Oregon, UGA in Atlanta, Va Tech in Landover, Washington in Seatte, etc. etc. Going to East Lansing will be a crazy atmosphere, but nothing they haven't experienced before.

On-campus will be a different animal. Playing the games in pro venues, while hostile, just never reach the level it can at a campus like MSU's. The fans are going to be insane. Sure, BSU played at Oregon but that atmosphere won't be like the one at MSU.

I respect Boise State fine. They have done some impressive things over the past decade. But a night game at MSU is just a special thing.

I do realize it. Actually, I have watched the evolution... from getting shellacked in Georgia in 2005... to the subsequent 73 wins and 6 losses.

We have heard the various fan bases in prior years talk about how our players were too small, too slow, not talented enough with too few stars and the impossibility that BSU could win. After BSU beat Oregon the second time, some of their fans still thought they would win 9 of 10. We thought that was humorous.

Actually, this year and last year BSU has received a ton of respect from knowledgeable fans including a bunch on this board. It was very interesting to watch Georgia fans actually consider themselves the underdog last year with a team that would end up making the SEC Conference Championship Game.

And I realize there are some who are less knowledgeable and some who are just provincial who will never acknowledge the progress that BSU has made. (BSU joined Division I in 1996 and has won more games than any other Division I program since.)

I guess I just enjoy watching the realization of a fan base they will likely have a game on their hands.

We have more questions this year than the last few with the loss of some great players, but the cupboard is not bare. We have heard great things about some of the underclassman who hadn't yet broken through.

MSU should be the favorite, but BSU will come to play and I expect we will have an entertaining game to which we can look forward.
