AT&T U-Verse vs Comcast (SIAP)

  • Revisit

My comcast bill just lost its promotion...so it went up $25. $159.99 for cable/high speed/phone. +7 for sports tier, +24 for 2 HD DVRs, +7 for phone modem, +tax = $207. NO premium movie channels.

I check u-verse online and with 3 boxes and damn similar service as far as I can tell I get $129+tax. so probably $140.

I chatted with Comcast and after much haggling and threatening to leave, they gave me $20 off for 6 months. Comcast offers my $159.99 service for $119.99 for new customers....plus a $150 visa card. No go for existing customers of course.

How can you find out the U-verse quality in my area? e.g. am I DSL or Fiber etc?

  • Yeah I just made the switch from Comcast to Uverse this past week. So far, so good. While I wasn't surprised, it's quite irritating that when I called to cancel, the Comcast dude told me he could lower my bill almost 50%. Then when I go to return the box and modem, the guy at the counter looked at my bill and said, "wow, you were paying a lot. I could've definitely brought that down for you." I shouldn't have to haggle down the price to get it to where I want every six months. I'll just rotate companies once a year and get the new customer price each time.

That's how they get you. I worked for several cable/telephony companies... it's not a business I really like, and I didn't have too many co-workers who disagreed with me.

Most people will get sick of having to wait on hold for an hour and then have to go through all of the hoops, run through the first rep's schtick... get put on hold for 30 more minutes... get run through another schtick before they get you to 'retention' which is still just a department designed to keep getting as much out of you as possible. But I guess that's business.

  • AT&T is the worse, but comcast is beyond bad.

I have AT&T. I discontinued my home phone service, by doing that my internet didn't work for three days and I spent 3 hours on the phone trying to fix it.

Did you have DSL only or Uverse.

  • My household really likes Uverse. You could nitpick some things but my only major compliant is that the On Demand is weak if you want to watch free movies.

I had the same experience with Comcast recently. I told them I had a better offer from Uverse and their response was "well, our internet is better." I have had Uverse before and in my experience the internet quality is no different. So, now I am back with Uverse for 12 months.

My main complaint with Uverse, as someone mentioned early in the thread, is that their free on-demand is pretty limited compared with Comcast. Uverse also has a contract dispute with NHL network and they stopped offering it. I miss having that but overall I can get enough hockey coverage with other channels/online. I am not sure how to tell whether you are fiber or not. I think mine is DSL, but as I said, I have had no issues with Uverse service in my area.

  • Great info, I am moving in a few weeks and will be picking between the 2. My only apprehension will be the internet speed as I stream my Netflix to my Blueray player and want movies to play seamlessly. U verse seems like the better value.

  • My friend switched from Comcast to U-verse and hated it. He switched back to Comcast. He couldn't record one channel while watching another (didn't have two tuner capability). The cable box was always slow getting instruction from the remote and sometimes wouldn't respond at all. They didn't have the MLB network which was a big deal to him. Has any of this changed in the last 6 months?

I know some of you hate pics in the sig, but how can you complain about these?

  • What about pricing, I need normal cable with HD channels and Internet, don't really need HBO or all the premium channels, what will I be looking at?

How about bundling my phone? How's that work for AT&T?

  • Can you manage your DVR via internet with Comcast now? Because you can with Uverse and it's pretty sweet. It also has a multiview feature which came in handy during march madness.

It also has some other features I don't remember having with Comcast. If you like a specific actor or actress you can easily find what other shows or movies they are in. There's also a search feature.

  • Bump?

Getting ready to throw Comcast out the F'n window. Been with them (or MediaOne) for over 15 years, but their service and quality is simply beyond unacceptable.

Leaning on switching to AT&T Uverse for E.L.

  • Can I get NFL Redzone on U Verse?

The 30-second skip is not even close to the way it works on Comcast. With Comcast you click the button 4-6 times and a commercial is instantly over, this doesn't work with Uverse. Very clunky, you are much better off just fast forwarding with Uverse. Also, you can't pause and swap between 2 live programs with Uverse.

wait, so clicking a button 4-6 times is not clunky?
