    I haven't seen other teams with as much off the field stuff going on as the Lions. Have you?

    The NFL has literally dozens of guys who don't use their heads and are thus threats to public well being, but it's a little disturbing that the Lions can't seem to stop this or even slow it down.

  • Anyone who thinks professional athletes look to their coach to be their moral compass are nuts. Sure Schwartz may be a jackass, but these players would be doing these same things with Saint Dungy wearing the headset.

Suh could have been a natural to keep guys in line, but he's one of the worst offenders when it comes to selfish behavior (albeit lesser indiscretions compared to some of his teammates).

    No, but i think its just a statistical glitch. Law of averages says it will bite somebody else, just the Lions have had a bad run lately.
    These guys have all had their asses kissed in college, and the real world is a lot less forgiving.

    You always run the risk of 1 or 2 guys going off the reservation, but if the team had a culture of commitment, they wouldn't have so many issues. The Raiders are notorious for having a renegade culture, and no matter how quickly the roster turns over, it never goes away. The Patriots have a reputation for taking "problem players", paying them less than other teams offer in free agency, and then guiding those guys to having a focus on winning.

    When Leshoure got his first pot possession charge, Stafford or Schwartz should have made a call to him to tell him to get his ass wired to his head. Then they should have called the 51 other guys on the team, remind them that they not only have a great opportunity in Detroit, they have an obligation to the team. Hell, at least send out a Tweet to remind guys not to drive drunk, or drag race with no insurance while in the possession of marijuana.

    The Lions are starting to remind me of some of the Saban/Bobby Williams teams: they look around the practice field and see a lot of potential...and instead of actually doing something, they're content knowing they COULD do something, if any of them gave a shit.

    There was talk of team meeting about conduct when they had their mandatory mini camp. These guys are adults, nothing the Lions can do will stop anyone from playing drunk bumper cars in some other state.

    The worst thing, for most pro athletes, is spare time. Their days, in season, are unbelievably structured and scheduled. Virtually every decision is made for them. Too many have no idea what to do with themselves away from the field or practice facility as a result.

    Because no one is listening. You have half a dozen guys (or more) who have gotten in trouble. Suh, Leshoure and Fairly have all had multiple incidents.

    I'm sure every team has a generic "Keep your head on straight" message occasionally. That carries about as much weight as a substitute teacher telling kids to do their homework. You need a leader, a respected player, to stay on the guys. And football teams are notorious for issuing "code reds". If a WR screws up, the QB can make sure he doesn't get any passes in practice, or a defender can put him on his ass in a non contact drill.

    Since so many on the team are so indifferent to staying out of trouble, I just don't think anyone is holding anyone accountable. There is no fear that they'll face ramifications for what they're doing.

    They don't look to their coach as a moral compass, but when you have a coach that is less disciplined than most college kids are, the players aren't going to care about getting in trouble.

    BTW - I have no problem with the off field issues. It's part of a trade off for getting a coach like Schwartz. If you're gonna live with the good things Schwartz has done, there's gonna also be some bad to live with also.
