This is the same play they ran earlier, turn the corner and look. Nice back door. Cleaves the alley-oop. Ohh! What a setup off the timeout!

I'm 25, single, run every single day and decided I wanted to get a companion. Went to an adoption "fair" where they make you fill out an application and stuff and absolutely got destroyed.

They did let me fill out the application but seriously do they not want these animals to get homes? Not every single animal is going to go home to a family of 7 kids and 2 parents who are veterinarians. Really bothersome to me. Needless to say, if (when) this application gets denied anyone got any places they recommend? Oakland County area hopefully.

Question 1. Were you wearing your MSU Med School shirt?
Question 2. Did you say anything about only being interested in italian greyhounds?

Every question they asked me, no matter what my response received a snippy remark. Just completely cut me down, saying backhanded comments left and right. I didn't actually get destroyed as a person, more as an applicant lol.

    1) MSU Sweatshirt (good call)
    2) I was interested in a pretty weird looking dog (Catahoula)

My wife and I foster for a local rescue in Michigan and don't feel bad... it seems like everyone that works at rescues are pompous assholes. It is pretty disheartening because we have had multiple dogs not get adopted - and later were euthanized - because the family couldn't pass the application process. It pissed my wife and I off enough that we stopped fostering.

That's exactly what I was talking about with my mom. Like okay if you reject everyone, these dogs end up sitting in cages until they get euthanized? Like why not take the chance on someone with the risk that they may end up back. They even had my mom sign a forms saying if I couldn't take care of the dog she would have to take it.

Apparently it's less cruel to euthanize the dogs than to give them to a subpar home? Doesn't make sense to me.

Well... Yes, if the adopters are Korean.

  • Try going to a vet, that is where I adopted my dog. When I was looking before some places wouldn't approve because I was single and worked 8-6.

This was a huge issue. I said the dog would be inside for most of the day. They only considered it when I told them I could come home at lunch time to let her out. But if I come home at 5 and take her for a run, I think she'll have plenty of exercise for the day.

  • Just go to a reputable breeder and get a good dog. Or better yet find a rescue/adoption organization for a specific breed. They seem to do a much better job at getting pets homes. Too many of the shelter foster dogs have been damaged by abuse and abandonment. These local adoption shelters really don't want you to adopt.

  • I had a very similar experience. I went to I guess what you would call a sanctuary when I was 23. The lady who ran the place let me play with the dogs, was very nice, but when I walked out the door they stopped by Uncle (who was with me and looking to adopt too) and told him to tell me not to get my hopes up. "No one is going to give a dog to someone his age who hasn't been in charge of another life before, try a cat"

I wanted to go back in and let her have it, but thought better of it. I ended up adopting from Humane Society in Detroit (off 75 at I think 7 mile?) and couldn't have been happier with the experience. They had some concerns with the hours I worked, but in the end decided that it was better than putting a dog down. I volunteered at the Humane Society a little years later, and seeing what these dogs life is like... I couldn't be happier I saved my friend from that place. I had to stop going, it was depressing.

Don't breed or buy while shelter dogs die.

  • Adopted dogs take a lot of work and often come with some emotional problems that stem from when they in their previous home (we have 3 adopted dogs in our family). I am not protecting the agencies, but they want to get these dogs in a position to be in the best home possible. Often times leaving them alone for long periods of time when you first get them can lead to the owners be frustrated by bad behaviors like chewing, urinating, and other things from anxiety. Now, with that said, I think often times they are too strict. If the dogs are not adopted they will only suffer more by being kept from a loving family. The agency forgets that 99% of the adopters will have a jobs that place them away form the dogs for some period of time. I would suggest that you go to the actual website/office and talking with them. Often, they will be a little less formal and more interested in talking with you. I would also suggest the local humane society. They willl set up one and one visits with the dogs. We have used this in the past also to get an idea of some of the dogs around http://www.petfinder.com/index.html . Don't get too frustrated as there are plenty of other places out there that are doin good work and very friendly.

Cool looking dog, by the way. I hope you end up getting it. F them for being jerks.

My family has had trouble with Vet Clinics with the whole attitude issue. We have a cat we took in who was a stray and has some problems but his condition could improve if we paid $300+ for procedures to correct some issues. It's a bit steep for us to pay but my sister has come home from the Clinic more than once crying or distraught because the workers there say @#$# to her since we don't get the procedures done. ( Saying she doesn't love our cat and @#$@ like that)

  • You could just find a person who has a dog but no longer wants one or can no longer properly care for one. If you keep your eyes open you find one real fast.

  • When my wife and I (no pics) decided to adopt a dog, we had to deal with a home visit from the rescue agency. It seemed a little excessive, but they didn't give us any problems.

  • Check the local Humane Society branches. You can see what pets each one currently has on their website, or you could check a site like Petfinder.com.

Good luck, OP. Sounds like your heart is in the right place. The applicants don't exactly represent the animals so don't let it deter you just because some of them are jerks. Someone out there really needs a home and wants to exercise with ya. =)

No I get it (and went through the same)
I rescued my buddy from the shelter and couldn't imagine what would have happened if I hadn't.
