Advise for a Hawkeye Fan? (Testicular Cancer)

  • went to apprenticeship school with a guy who had it. They took one nut, cut him open to the chest to remove other issues. Sewed him back up and put him on chemo. He was on chemo for over a year. Strength came back, went back to work. Got his wife pregnant, she even told him to get a paternity test if she didnt believe him, cause he was told it probably would never happen.

tKid is happy and healthy. My buddy is early 50s now and life is good. (he was early mid 20s when he was diagnosed)

    Thats all Ive got.

Just posting this here bc our home site is very slow.

Has anyone had or know someone (personally, not lance) who has had testicular cancer?

I am getting a testicle removed tomorrow morning and they are going to test for cancer... wondering if anyone has any experience with this... doc said it likely is cancer just a matter of if it has spread or not...

I havent been able to stay off the search sites since getting this news today but want to know if someone here has a more personal expierence on what I'm likely going to be going through...

    thanks rcmb

  • Good luck man. If you get a replacement ball don't get Mark Dantonio size. It might be tempting, but only one man can walk around with testicals that big.

  • A friend of mine needed to have a nut removed due to cancer. This was about 10 years ago. He is healthy and has had no other issues. Since the surgery, him and his wife have had two kids. Not sure if they used the sperm bank, or did it naturally (a little awkward to ask).

Try to stay optimistic! Good luck!

    1. if you want to have kids, go to a sperm bank. 2. if it hasn't spread it really is not a huge concern (besides the fact that, you know you had cancer) 3. if it has spread... thats more worrisome.

At the end of the day, no man wants to lose one of the boys, but when its the potential to cut short your life... well I'd give my left nut to keep on living.

Try your best, as silly as that sounds, to keep a positive attitude. If there are hurdles or set backs, don't settle for defeat, make it your life's mission (appropriate) to beat the piss out of cancer.

Thanks Leo, I asked about the sperm bank they said i dont need to go until after the surgery when they figure out if its cancerous or not....

Appreciate all the kind words guys...

and thanks to the jackass above... thumbsup

On a much, much lighter note: Aren't you going to be a bit conflicted for the upcoming game at Soldier Field?

    PS: Congrats on grad-assistant gig.

"we'll call you with the results when they're available in 3-5 days."

Most miserable days of my life when my wife had a lump removed from her breast a few week after our Honeymoon. I'm getting all emotional right now just thinking about it. I don't know you, but I'm truly sorry that you have to go through that bullshit.

That's what im most freaked out about... He told me 3 days... My surgery is at 7:30 am (central) does the three days in tomorrow, sat, sun, or they going to do tomorrow, monday, tuesday? After the 4th?

Im all Huskie on Sept. 1st but yes it will be weird especially working for iowa for 5 years as an undergrad...

Ill root for the hawks to go 11-1 during the season, but as far as Soldier Field goes, Go Huskies!

  • No real advice to offer, but thoughts and prayers are with you. 23 is way too damn young to be dealing with this kind of crap.

    TravelinMan

  • dkhawkeye, first piece of advice... You beat the disease, do not let it beat you. No matter what you learn, losing is NOT an option.

I spent the better part of my childhood dealing with a father who was suffering from cancer. Skin, testicular, you name it. Agent Orange is a bitch. Anyway, never did it cross his mind that he was going to leave a wife and three young kids behind. It just wasnt going to happen.

So my early memories with Dad were sitting by a bed or couch as he lay there exhausted from chemo and radiation. In 1987 (at 39 years old), they sent him home from the hospital because they wanted him to spend his last Christmas on earth at home with his family.

I am proud to say that he is healthy (despite diabetes, again Agent Orange is a B!), retired, enjoyinig his grand kids, and coming to every single Spartan home football and basketball game.

I am sure you are in a much better situation and it has not taken over like it has my father, but no matter what you hear, do not let anyone tell you that you are not going to come out of this as good or better than before. Because the only person that determines that is you. You can and will get past this minor bump in the road.

    Best Wishes!

I have known 2 people with it. They went through the whole deal with the surgery and chemo, but they are fine now.

    Good luck with it.

  • Thanks all for you kind words and wishes... 8.5 hours till surgery...

on a lighter note, what do you think happens when i only have one ball left? (my left one is going bye bye tomorrow)

    1. The remaining ball stays in the same place as it is now... or
    2. The remaining ball settles and sits in the middle

Last night ever with my left nut.. haha that seems weird

  • Haven't read the thread but my 21 year old cousin has testicular cancer. He got one testicle removed. Just went through chemo and is having tests done this week to find out the next steps. He's seen the same doctor that Lance saw apparently.

The only way he caught this thing early was through his girlfriend noticing something different/wrong. Def. check your junk regularly.

To the OP, stay strong and beat this thing!

MOSTLY TRUE........but Coach D' could always lend dk his wheelbarrow: coach is cool that way. The big ball society has to stick together.
