Airport/Flying Pet Peeves

People crowd the gate because there is never enough overhead bin space because everyone carries on more stuff than they should to avoid the $25 fee. They want to get on as soon as possible so they can jam their enormous bag above your head with their junk right in your face, before someone else does.

then it's the airline's responsibility to make sure people are getting on when their row/section is called. Hell, I once flew with the Indiana team and one player was almost denied boarding because he kept trying to get on before his row was called. If you're in row 12 and 20-25 is called don't be a jagoff and sneak on so you can put your massive bag that takes up half of the overhead bin, keeping those of us who followed the rules from being able to put my reasonably sized bag in the bin and if people do try and do it then the gate agents need to sack up and tell people to wait their turn.

  • Idiots who when I have a window seat and they have the middle seat do not move over to the aisle seat if nobody shows up. I can do without your ass cheeks rubbing up against mine you fat heavy breathing hairy bastard.

  • This. However as someone mentioned earlier, this problem is not nearly as annoying without the airlines charging non-status flyers to check a bag.

Airlines could have charged an extra $20 on average per ticket and avoided the problem.

    1. People that start crowding around the gate an hour + before departure.

Gate Lice. The most annoying thing is that people will be in like zone 15 but stand right in front of the entrance blocking everyone else who is in zone 1,2,3 etc. from getting up there.

  • Most of mine have been mentioned, but here is another one that has to do with luggage: when flying on a smaller plane the airlines will often make you check your carryon suitcase at the gate. If they were going to do this then people should have been required to check their bags ahead of time. Instead it clogs up the line to board the plane, and it becomes a clusterfuck when deboarding because everyone is standing around in the jetway waiting for their bags to be taken out of the plane and brought up to them.

Airport gates that do not have enough restaurants/bars. This leads to about thirty people gathered around a four seat bar waiting 15 minutes to order a beer from some 50 year old washed out flight attendant.

Fort Lauderdale is a wasteland for food. Makes me appreciate DTW and just about every other airport I've ever been in.

And then they get pissed at YOU when you try to get around them to board! Had someone woman with her big ol' roller board blocking the way last week. I politely said "excuse me" as I tried to get around her. She turns to me, gets real close to my face, and semi-yells/hisses "They're only boarding first class. You don't need to go up there right now!" I stopped, looked at her, and simply said, "Um, yeah, I do."

I winked at her when she waddled by my seat of 3A. I don't think she took it well.

It doesn't have anything to do with weight. Airlines have reduced airfare and made the difference up in luggage fees in order to avoid higher taxes by the government.

I didn't know that. However I'm sure the weight savings help too. Abd it doesnt change the fact that airlines are morans for allowing free bags.

  • Been lucky enough to fly private general aviation a couple of times. Wish I could afford to swear off commercial airlines forever. Flew to Chicago last year from Howell.. Arrived at the airport at 8am. Plane was out of the hanger and preflighted by 815, took off and 1 hour later landed in an airport near Chicago.
Same experience with Mackinaw Island.. Took off at 1030 from Howell, landed on Mackinaw and were having lunch at the Grand by noon. Home in time for dinner after a day on the island.. Just a nicer way to travel.

Your seat mate looks a little more frightened than you in this photo I obtained from your flight. (Sorry I was looking for "hippie in first class" photos on google images and I found nothing worthwhile)

This. If the luggage fee was rolled into the ticket price, all of it is taxed. By itemizing out, say $25 for luggage, the airline isn't taxed something like 7.5% on this and they keep it all. Multiplied by thousands of passengers a day, it's advantage airline.

  • As a frequent flier with a little status flying is not much of a hassle these days. Biggest pet peeves are empowered gate agents (rare) and as mentioned numerous times, people who carry on too much luggage. Also, flight attendants at least on Delta are friendly and efficient but nothing to look at these days.

Am I the only one who feels that ticket prices are anything but reduced over the past few years?? I understand the price of gas plays a role, but I can't fly anywhere for less than $300.

Five or six short years ago you could find round trip tickets for $100 - $150 depending on the departure and arrival cities

I also don't like it when people, especially in the front of the plane, don't have their stuff ready to go when deboarding. When it is okay to take off your seatbelt, get your ass up and get your bag out of the overhead compartment and put it on your lap. Your turn to leave the plane doesn't mean it is time to find your bag.

    I absolutely hate this!

I'm not one of those guys in the back who bolts to the front to get off first but damn, it's annoying to stand there as these people block the aisle looking for their shit.

Also, if you put your bag in a bin way behind your seat, sorry about your luck. You're just going to have to wait for others to get off before you walk back there to get it.

Or better yet - what about the person who's sitting in 8a, but because they got there late, had some crazy-ass XL carry on, or whatever, had to place it in the overhead back around 23a. So the plane stops and they're swimming against the current pushing and shoving because "I need to get to my bag." No, you need to sit your ass down and wait until the traffic has cleared, moran.

Of course, this also brings up the idiot that sits in 23a, but places their bag in the overhead above 8a because they don't want to carry it all the way back.

Here's another trick - fuel has nowhere near anything to do with ticket prices as the airlines would have you believe. They hedge purchase their fuel. They agree to a set price for the entire year. So when the airlines say "oh, fuel has gone up in price, so we have to raise rates", they're blowing smoke up your ass. They're paying the exact same rate they were months before.

I fly into that place once a month, and you are absolutely correct. Terrible if you want to grab something prior to your flight.

  • By the way, if you are a frequent flyer on Delta out of DTW and not in the TSA Preferred traveler program you need to try and get listed for it.

Since becoming part of that program, It has never taken me more than 30 seconds to get through security once passing the boarding pass-ID review....

As an added bonus, Vegas participates... Anyone who flys into (and especially out of that airport) know how big a bonus this is....

  • Two MAJOR pet peeves of mine...

    1. People that stand in the middle of the moving walkway and are completely oblivious that 15 people are behind them trying to pass. Get out of the f'ing way! Not everyone is on your slow time schedule. These people are completely oblivious to everyone around them. One of these days I am just going to walk right over their luggage and knock it to the ground.

    2. This has somewhat been mentioned. The people that jump out of their seat immediately even though there is still 10 minutes of waiting until everyone else gets off the plane. The biggest issue, however, is when I am sitting in an aisle and these people get up and put their ass right in my face. You are already an idiot for getting up right away...dont make yourself a bigger tool by standing with your ass in my face.
