Allen making push on O-line

  • Really nice to have so much depth on the line. Seems like we have 7 "starters" on the line right now.

  • I'm really thinking more and more than in 2013 we might kick out Travis Jackson to RG and have Allen at C.

In 2013 we could see something like:

    LT France
    LG Clark
    C Allen
    RG Jackson
    RT Burkland

    No Treadwell?

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

With ARW gone after this year, move Treadwell back to NT. He was a beast in limited time in 2010.

Derp. Whatever reason I thought he was a senior this year. Swap out Clark for Treadwell.

FWIW, the article says he's staying on the OL. Figure that means Reynolds sticks on the DL and takes over at NT.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

It's the 2013 OL. Fonoti is a SR this year, along with McDonald, Deyo and Ruhland. Here's a potential look at the OL in '13

    LT: France, RS SR

    LG: Treadwell, RS SR

    C: Allen, RS Soph

    RG: Jackson, RS JR

    RT: Burkland, RS JR

    Other options:

Dennis at LT (unlikely), Conway at RT (hmmm), Clark at either OG spot. Figure Higgins, McGowan and Kieler won't see the field till '14 at the earliest.

For this year, Roushar says that if Allen sees the field, it will be at guard while Jackson stays at center. So next year, if they are both starters, why is it that Allen moves to center instead of Jackson staying put?

Agree, I understand getting your best players on the field but continuity at Center is HUGE especially considering Jackson would then be a 3 year starter and be going in to his second year with Maxwell at QB. And, Allen would have real experience at Guard at that point as well. It's a good problem to have....and injuries could change everything

  • As we look at the pool of bodies I think a couple of the most talented are both short on experience. That being Allen and Burkland. McDonald seems the most secure at his position and brings the most experience to the OL. Jackson and Fu have almost a years starting experience. Treadwell and Burkland have a couple starts under their belts. France has a full year in. With that said I think Burkland might end up beating out France if he gets back to 100% from his injury. An ideal line could be Fu, McDonald, Allen, Jackson and Burkland with France and Treadwell as key backups. But most likely Allen and Burland will end up starting the season on the bench and may work their way into the lineup by effort or injuries. Allen is intriguing. The battle between Allen and Jackson over the next 2 years will be fun to watch. I would like to see play some center so that we have to experienced guys there. Injuries at C and LT are the most damaging to an OL. Having interchangable guys like Jackson and Allen at C and G could be a real asset.

Meh. He didn't really set the world on fire at DT, but he's a classic "high motor" guy who gets more acclaim than his actual production would warrant. I think redshirting him after the injury last year was a great decision, but he seems to have been passed up at OG too. I think he'll backup the 2 OG spots this year and next.

  • They've loved Allen for a long time.....I believe he will start at guard and Jackson stays at Center and rightfully so. Travis had a VERY good year last season and was nails down the stretch. Personally, I think Allen lines up with McDonald, Jackson, Fonoti and France as starters this season. Burkland will be a swing tackle and back up Fonoti and France while Treadwell will be the first reserve guard. Gotta put your best 5 on the field and that is the most talented line we've had since Flozell was here in the mid 90's.

  • A couple weeks ago, CBD said he wouldn't be surprised if the starting line looked like this:

    LT: Burkland
    LG: France
    C: Jackson
    RG: McDonald
    RT: Fonoti

Still feel that way, CBD? Burkland seems like the wildcard in these predictions based on his health and whether he is comfortable on the left side.

Well, god knows CBD is the MAN when it comes to MSU football..........however I just think Allen is good enough to beat out Tredwell and France will keep that LT spot.....France has really improved. I like Burkland BUT like Ringer just said: his health is holding him back a little right now. Jackson is solid at Center and McDonald and Fonoti are no brainers.

Not so sure Fonoti is a no brainer, only because of the following quote...

“Is he in there behind Fou or behind Danny? To be determined,” Roushar said of Burkland. “I think Skyler was maybe a little bit more uncomfortable on the left side throughout the spring. We’d rather have him uncomfortable on the left side in the spring than in the fall.

“Let’s make him uncomfortable, I think that was coach (Mark) Dantonio’s thought process, have him challenge and compete with Danny and then know that we can move him right back to the right side if needed as we start training camp.”

This makes me think there's a chance Burkland moves back to the right side and wins the RT job if he's not comfortable on the left side. Who knows, though? Having 7 capable linemen is a nice problem to have.

Burkland's "natural" position is RT. Problem is that that's where Conway best fits, and then you have 3 of your 4 OTs at one spot. That's not going to work.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Not going to work because of possible injuries? France at LT and Burkland at RT for the next two years seems nice to me.

Good questiion: the kid has serious talent but I never hear Roushar or Staten or anyone else talk about him: he has ALOT at stake in the fall I believe. He needs to step it up to be considered a part of the equation IMO.
