Seriously though, I find it pretty amazing that he takes in so many highly touted freshman every year and is able to put their egos aside and have them play unselfish basketball. Don't think many coaches would be able to do that.

  • Of course he cares about his players. He invested quite a bit of money into each one.

Lots of sleazebags have mastered the art of charisma. Don't worry, you aren't the only sucker out there.

  • I think he's a hell of a good coach and of course an awesome recruiter. As long as the NCAA and NBA let colleges recruit one and done's, you can't complain about his program at UK. Other than the obvious talent, they always play hard, play great defense and play together. Today's game matched up two of the best coaches in the country.

  • The reason I'm not as anti-Cal as the rest of you is that he's friends with Izzo.

    In Izzo I trust.

Would you prefer they bump it up to two years so Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist and Teague would be required to return? Or perhaps three? Then their whole team would be back minus Miller... Yeah, count me out.

  • No, frankly I don't understand how anyone could respect him. His run at Umass was vacated. His run at Memphis was vacated. His buddy in hiding World Wide Wes. Sorry, don't want to see him win, although they appear to be a lock.

He's a hell of a coach? Are you on crack? Did you watch the UConn game last year? With the talent he has churned out the guy should have at least 2 rings. He rolls the ball out there and his teams out-athlete and out shoot their opponents.

His agenda is different. I really think he does care about his players - he cares about them getting them drafted high - and I think that to him trumps his desire for Championships. It's quite obvious that the means by which he lands these players is less than clean - there is a track record backing that up.

He is a very mediocre in-game coach and a great recruiter - by any means necessary. Always fun to try to spin RCMB conspiracies and act like you're somehow above the groupthink, though.

Typical shallow take. Did Kentucky just out athlete Louisville today? Of course they are more athletic but they play tough defense and play as a team. Cal doesn't sit on the sidelines and let them play street ball dude.

  • He's one of the shadiest characters in college athletics today. NCAA violations at his two previous stops, rumblings that Anthony Davis' father is similar to Cam Newton's old man. No, he's not one of the good guys.

You think he just hands the ball to multiple waves of freshmen each year and says "Here, go out there and do whatever" and they just magically come out as a Top 5 team each year? That's laughable. If letting freshmen go out there and do work is that easy, why hasn't Duke or UNC been able to do the same with all the McDonald's AAs they've brought in year after year after year? A team this young has only been able to do this once and it was the Fab 5... and that was just one crop of kids. Calipari has gotten three different classes to at least the Elite 8 and to two Final 4s. Take off your hate hat and realize that he coaches these kids up at least a little bit. They're the best defensive team in the country and you think that's because of the kids?

Um yes, they did out-athlete Louisville today. Pitino is playing a matchup zone, applying full court pressure occasionally, working plays out of timeouts and they stayed in the game basically with 2 players and coaching. Level the talent on those two teams and who did the superior coaching job today? What exactly did Cal do to counter the zone? Louisville flustered them, and hung in the game but ultimately with athletes of that caliber who can shoot like that, you can only plug the dam with your thumb for so long.

I am not a basketball coach, so perhaps my take is shallow in your mind, but I watch my fair share of college hoops and I disagree with you wholeheartedly. Cal is a mediocre at best in-game coach. If he didn't have success on the recruiting trail, he would have little success at all in my opinion.
