Am I the only one who likes coach cal?

  • If Cal goes down Monday night the Kentucky fanbase will be wanting his head. I want to be entertained by that. It would make my week go by so fast.

  • Yes, he cares about his players, as in telling them to "get up, Momma's boy" when they're laying injured on the court (his own words from a recent ESPN interview, then he laughed and said "I guess I didn't know how serious it was").

That's exactly what they did lol PItino coached circles around Cal today...just like he always does. Louisville out hustled and out toughed Kentucky to stay in that game, but they simply didn't have the firepower to compete with the endless stream of NBA ready guys. the fact that Cal only won that game by a few points is a perfect illustration of why he's a shitty coach. How many guys on that Louisville team are going in the first round? 5 from KY are.

Louisville out hustles and out toughs every team they play. Including MSU. That's what they do. They beat the crap out of us but Kentucky was never in real danger of losing. They play very good defense and are a cohesive team because of Calipari. I don't like his recruiting style and would rather have players who stay fora few years but Cal blends them into a team. No matter what you think of him personally it's absolutely moronic to say he's not a great coach.

give me 7 or 8 future NBA players and i'll be a great coach in college too.

a hell of a good coach? roflmao

Cal is a mediocre basketball coach...at best. what he is is a master at using guys like Worldwide Wes and their connections to guys like Jay Z - who was behind the KY bench tonight - to convince talented players to come play for him for one or two years because he's great at "developing" them for the NBA. he doesn't give a shit about Kentucky or college basketball....he cares about all the ancillary deals he has going that have made him a very rich man who has a litany of even richer men playing in the league. he is single handedly trying to ruin college basketball by making a mockery of the entire concept of college athletics. It's been on shaky ground for a while now, but he doesn't even pretend to give a shit about educations. He runs an NBA Development squad, and that's all he cares about.

and even WITH all that talent at his disposal, he routinely loses in the big game because he's simply not a good coach, and he's particularly useless in a close game in crunch time. he doesn't have the slightest fucking clue of how to draw up a winning play when they need it because he has 5 guys who are all stars that do it for him. just give it to Gilchrist or Jones or Lamb or Davis and let them make a shot. That's his game plan. it happens to work especially well this year because I think Davis is an exceptionally talented and uncommonly mature kid. Derrick Rose was not. John Wall was a joke. He'll probably win....but don't pretend it isn't a terrible thing for the sport and the ability of other schools who actually give a shit about the fact that they are a UNIVERSITY to compete with his band of Jay Z slurping all stars.

Yeah! What the fuck was Jay Z doing there hanging out with their players?

No one has sympathy that he helped Derrick Rose get into college?

The only reason Rose was in college was because the NBA forced him to be. If you mean he helped him get into college by arranging his cheating of a college entrance exam then that is pathetic.

I always laugh when I hear this. It's like being impressed that a multi millionaire didn't go bankrupt. Gosh, I can't believe a coach can take an NBA team deep into the tournament! It's got to be so much easier doing it with scrubs. If Cal is such an artist at managing egos, then why did he flame out of the NBA so quickly, a league rampant with egotism? Oh, I guess because you need good players to win. Imagine that.

He flamed out so quickly in the NBA because he was the coach of the NJ Nets and took over from Butch Baird who was a bad coach.

I think most on here agree that if Izzo had gone to the Cavs a few years ago, because they have no players, he would not have been able to win with them. Does that mean that Izzo is a bad coach or can't coach without good players? Of course not. Same with Calipari.

I actually kinda like Kentucky's team this year. Thought I would hate their players and that they'd be all cocky, but they are pretty much the opposite of that. They play great defense and play surprisingly unselfish. It really is surprising how much they play as a team. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

  • I've made this argument here in relation to Nick Saban, and I think it applies to Cal as well: there are different types of coaches who are good at different things.

Cal (much like Saban), is a brilliant recruiter. As dirty as I think he is (and I really don't think there's any doubt among those who know what's going on in college hoops that he's dirty), he's not the only one out there who's willing to break the rules. Yet he's the one getting great players, and I think you do have to give him credit for that (just like you have to give Izzo credit for getting the quality of players he gets while playing it clean).

Also like Saban, I think Cal has the ability to make his all-star teams gel. Not everyone can do that. Just like Phil Jackson could manage to get Kobe to buy into his system to win championships, Cal manages to have players who buy into his system. Is his system that complex or brilliant? I don't think so. But it doesn't need to be. He just needs to make sure the talent is harnessed enough that his teams don't squander their immense talent advantage (sometimes they do, sometimes they don't).

So I don't respect Cal as an individual, because I think he's a cheater. I also don't think he's a brilliant basketball mind. But I do give him credit for doing a solid job of being the kind of coach he needs to be.

  • Everyone always says Cal is dirty, but I have never read any piece of text with evidence. It's just "Oh he gets the best players so he's dirty." it sounds like sour grapes. Can anyone post a link that has some type of evidence?

Oh but hes had two final tours vacated! Yeah, but one is because Camby took money from an agent his senior year, the year he was the unquestioned #1 pick, and one is because D. Rose had someone take the SAT for him. The only thing is, cheating on the SAT isn't necessarily unheard of, and often takes place without the coaches knowing. Hell, Jason Williams (limo driver shooter) wrote how he had a guy take the SAT for him.

He's just a good coach to me. shrug

Dreams of being a college star my ass. If the NBA one year rule didn't exist Rose would never have set foot on a college campus.

And if he really wanted to be a college star he needed to do it in a legit manner like every other college star has had to do.

There's a Cal in every profession - the guy who finds loopholes or bends the rules to get ahead. He's a 90s baseball player who says "Well, there was technically no rule against steroids..." or a lawyer who specializes in getting his guilty clients off on ridiculous technicalities. He's a Wall Streeter who profited from bad mortgages, not caring about the impact on anyone else. He games a flawed system, profits from it and doesn't feel the slightest bit guilty. If that's the kind of person you associate with (or are), then I could see why you would like him. But the vast majority of people prefer that everyone follow not only the letter but the intent of rules and laws.

As crazy as Kentucky fans are for a winner, I imagine it's tough for even many of them to stomach when it means to have Cal as their coach.

Kentucky fans when Cal was hired were saying, "We don't care if he cheats, so long as he wins before he gets caught."

This. It's highly predictable on the RCMB that coaches who don't do things they way they would have them done are labeled as dirty. There's no proof that Calipari is dirty. It may turn up some time in the future and for sure he has taken some scholastically marginal players but every coach does this in some form. So he goes after one and dones these days. I don't think the large majority of UK fans give a damn.
