Any chance the Pistons make a deal?

  • Trade deadline coming up. J. Smith and Rondo rumored to be on the move, you know a big deal or two will go down. Any way they can end up as a 3rd wheel/facilitator type deal in one of them? Maybe pick up a couple draft picks or unload salary.

We really need to lose Tayshaun. Like the guy, but he doesn't really fit where this team is at right now.

Joe D said they could be active at the deadline.

  • Active for the Pistons probably means something like trading their 11th man for another 11th man. There was a time when I'd be able to give names.

For Tayshaun.....anybody have a couple raggedy old driveway basketballs where you can't see the brand anymore? An open bag of chips, a half eaten bagel with gum stuck to it.

This amuses me to some extent because they are an absolute hot mess without him on the court WITH STUCKEY and WITH MONROE.

Clearly he's on the decent of his career and is overpaid and for too long, but it's odd to throw him under the bus.

Gordon, Charlie V, Maxiell (Who has been better of late), would be way better targets for frustration.

Don't forget about Austin Daye, which is easy to do since he's only seen when the camera pans down the bench.

Maybe I should have prefaced with Tay being my least favorite Piston for many moons.

I could hardly stand him when we were good. I've only watched a handful of minutes this season just to check out Knight.

Yea I wonder if they could move him for a pick or something; don't know.

He's making the average for his experience and position. Not "all that money". He's still a good solid NBA player.

Is there any particular reason you dislike Prince? Other than the awesome block he made on Reggie Miller to help the Pistons beat the Pacers in 2008? Or his extremely valuable work in helping the Pistons win a title in 2004 and be the best team in the East for 4-5 years?

Ty Lawson? The starting Denver PG who's the fastest guy on the court? He hit a game winner against Sacramento a few days ago.

Ugh... Such whiney Pistons fans, whom I'm positive have watched less than 2 games this year. Tayshaun is exactly the player this Piston team needs because he plays defense, which is what Frank is trying to get the team to do - look at the job he did on Kobe last week. Also, he isn't overpaid and for his production and service time he is actually underpaid.

As far as this Austin Daye hindsight bullshit goes... 1. Using the same crystal ball that you obviously own, I'd rather have Knight than Lawson. And 2. Any player drafted, yes even Lawson, would have been poisoned by the last few toxic years under 3 coaches. Frank is trying to get him to play defense, something the other coaches haven't asked him to do. Now he needs to work harder and make a better effort and contribution, but with a new coach, no preseason and a shortened compacted regular season, fans should be willing to give the guy 1 more year to prove himself.

As far as the original topic goes, I doubt the Pistons would trade any productive young assets like Monroe, Knight, or Jerebko and Stuckey can't be traded. Cheap veteran role players like Bynum, Maxiell, Wallace or Wilkins could be traded but it would only be for a pick or a young player with talent, something they probably aren't going to get offered unless a playoff team falls in love or gets desperate. Same goes with younger unproductive players like Daye or Macklin, although they would probably trade them for an all-hustle vet player who helps them shape this new defensive identity like Jon Berry did all those years ago. Walker Russell is on borrowed time and can't be traded.

Now the players that could definitely be traded... but won't... Prince, Gordon, and Villanueva. Prince would need to return an unprotected draft pick and/or a young talented starter. Prince has been a Piston lifer and is probably their best defender. He does have moments of laziness and petulance, but overall he is the vet mentor and one of those players that keeps a talented roster from becoming a group of loser AAU knuckleheads like the Wizards. Now I think his price tag is too high for most teams and there aren't many desperate for a small forward.

Gordon could be had for an expiring contract and a pick or a player with untapped potential. Unfortunately his contract is bad for his production and he is most likely viewed as a bench player on a playoff team due to his tweener status.

Charlie V could be had for nothing... Best case scenario would be a low post player making a similar salary with fewer years. This would be a swap of junk... Now the thing is, I'm not sure Charlie would be considered a bad teammate, one of the few instances his softness comes as a plus. He seems to have a positive attitude despite being garbage, so I'm not sure Joe would want to trade for a player with a salty disposition unless he could be bought out or released due to an expiring contract. Also, Charlie hasn't been healthy all year but should get a game or 2 to show something before the trade deadline. He's going to stay a Piston unfortunately.

So unfortunately, IMHO, I don't see a trade this season... Maybe in the offseason, though, before the draft.
