Any of you guys completely shut down Facebook, LinkedIn, etc

  • ????

I'm tossing around the idea - At first my Facebook was alright, I just had some good friends up on that thing, "met up" with some old friends from high school, etc.... now, it just exists. I can't post funny shit up on it because all the people in my office are friends with me, including my boss. There's no reason to have it - I can't actually do anything with Facebook, all it does is exist. The only function I use is that I upload pictures after a trip or something and tag my friends / family members that I went with. That's pretty much it. Over the past few weeks I've been tossing around the idea.... and LinkedIn, too. My former paralegal who moved to another state wants to be friends with me on LinkedIn. Why? How could that possibly benefit or be of any future assistance to your career? This social media shit is getting way out of control.... plus, whereever you go on the internet you see people you know from Facebook and you're asked whether you want to connect with them at that sight.

I have never done Facebook and have never seen the point so I can't comment there. However, I did give Linked In a shot and see exactly zero benefit to it. Putting my resume on jobs boards always yields calls, but I have never once been contacted by anyone via Linked In about an opportunity. I really don't see the point at all. That and I have tried to use it to network into companies or gather some information and that never works either.

All in all, I think it's useless.

  • Why did Facebook postpone their IPO. They know its a fad that is dying fast.

Had it, dumped it after listening to Zuckerberg on privacy.

Twitter, have it, never look at it. White noise.

Same here. Looked at twitter for a couple weeks, MSU news and such, but really this site is all you need for that.

I've found that Linkedin is very fruitful for job leads if you work in an industry that relies heavily on recruiters. If you join your industry related discussion boards and add some recruiters to your contacts, the leads filter in. I average 2 or 3 a month from Linkedin.

I like Facebook, but it is getting old. Its good for meeting/flirting with chicks in college, and provides some organization and some laughs from friends, but once you get to be my age (24) it seems a little silly and unnecessary. Might pull the trigger on getting rid of it but I still use it from time to time.

  • I quit Facebook over a year ago. I joined in like late 2005/early 2006 when it was still "The Facebook". It was cool for a while, but it got to the point where every single person in the world was on it, and it just just a never-ending stream of nonsense ("Took my cat to the vet today!", "Guess what I ate for lunch today!"). That, combined with Zuckerberg's position on privacy and who owns information was enough to make me jump ship. Missed it for a week or two, then just stopped thinking about it.

Google+ is pretty nice. Sometimes I'll only get like 5-6 updates a day, but it's usually pretty interesting stuff, so I'm ok with that.

Recruiters call me all the time. They only recruiters I see on LinkedIn are lazy recruiters who can't find your number.

  • I shut down facebook for almost 9 months, and then logged in for the first time about 2 months ago. great decision. now, i check it once every month, or couple of weeks. really, not something that i need to stay connected with people.

i dislike how facebook seems to have overtaken any other form of communication. i'd rather call someone, write a personal e-mail, or even write an actual letter. i'm 25, but i have people that are 40ish telling me to contact them through facebook. i think those that didn't have it right away are riding the wave, and those of us that had it at its beginning are starting to get sick of it.

linkedin, however, i have found to be nice. i don't log in every day to check it, but it is great for finding professionals in your field. it's great when you're job searching.

With the recent changes to Facebook, you can control who sees what. You can make it so only your close friends see things, or just so that your coworkers don't. Takes a little setting up, but if you want to stay on there, it's worth it.

  • I like facebook. It's an easy way of keeping in contact with a lot of friends from high school and college who I rarely see since I have left the state. There are a lot of people who I don't care about enough to call/text them but I like enough to care about what they are up to.

I don't use Linkedin a ton but it is a good way to keep business contacts. I like twitter but really only use it to get my news. I like google+ but I wish more people kept up with it.

However, I am not a cynical asshole douchebag, so my opinion will be different from just about everyone in this thread.

  • Never had it, never will. I find communicating face to face or by phone much more effective. I believe this 'techy' type of communicating is ruining the younger generation. They no longer think they have to talk to anybody, and thus, there is a disconnect . I often picture the little prick kids in Gran Torino texting at their grandmothers' funeral.....

I can see it being effective if you lived out of state away from family and friends. This would probably be the one and only reason to get it.........

  • I don't use twitter or linkedin. Just don't see a reason for them.

I use facebook but I rarely post. For me, it's mostly to share pics with friends and family.
