Anybody drug their dog?

  • My dog is bat shit f'ing crazy. He destroys everything when we aren't home. We have been working on his issues for almost a year (he is two). Vet was recommended looney meds and a behavior specialist. Any success stories?

Hahaha. We have. He chewed through the welds on the crate in one day. He also flung poo in every direction and scratched the shit out of the flooring beneath the crate. He has also chewed through two interior doors.

We have a 17 mo. old long haired GS who is an excitable girl, and my wife and I have talked about Zoloft for dogs. She isn't really destructive, just has a mind of her own. Knows all the commands in the house, but can't hear you outside, and would run the energizer bunny to death easily.

She's pretty bummed right now because my wife flew to NYC for a class on Saturday night and Tallulah jumps on the bed every afternoon about 3:30 to watch for her out the window. Got home today and she went from room to room looking for mom and gave me a depressed look when she didn't find her.

  • Yep, we use clomicalm (clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant used for OCD). We also have Xanax for trips to the vet and stressful situations. It seems to have taken the edge off of him, but he still has plenty of personailty. There isn't a crate made that can hold him, so we give him a crate with no door in our bedroom, and that is where he stays when we leave since that is the room he feels safest/most comfortable. Definitely talk to your vet, and see what they have to say. I have heard good things about lavender oil, too, though never tried it, and maybe leaving on talk radio so they can hear a voice all day can help. But your guy might be too much for lavender and talk radio.

We also had a girl that sounds a lot like your dog. She pooped and peed in the crate every day, chewed doors, crates, seats, etc everyday. What we did with her was a very systematice crate training, like the linked article below talks about.

I concur. At least not now.

I love dogs but if you can't give a dog time including morning and evening walks/running plus attention to train maybe this just isn't a good time to have a dog. Not that you are a bad person but sometimes your job(s), living quarters, available time might mean you like the dog but the dog needs more of your time/life than you have to give.

Then there is the breed and sometimes just the way a particular dog is wired due to genetics. My godson teased their belgian schipperke for weeks when it was in the cage being house trained. First time they let the dog out it cornered my godson and wouldn't let him move. Later that week they took the dog to their boat for the first time. Damned dog would only let the wife and daughter on the boat. They found the belgian schipperke a new home before the weekend was out.

Then they bought a Shelty. Great dog untl the wife went out of town (she had a home office) and my buddy forgot to leave the office to let the dog out during the day. He came home and the Shelty had attacked their bedroom closet and chewed up shoes, ties, a couple of suits, a blazer and an expensive overcoat. All his stuff. None of the wife'sstuff was touched.

Your dog is pissed off when you leave. Maybe it needs to be outside to run in the yard while you are at work or just needs to have the owner(s ) around more. As soon as you take the dog off tranquilizers the bad behavior will start up again.

time to send him to Caesar the doggy psychologist........start with a tread mill. I put my hyper Border Collie on that friggin' thing DAILY plus walk him for miles at a time outside: works like a charm...got the idea from the dog whisperer

    spartyon1

  • Spend the money on a treadmill rather than drugs and put him on it till he wants to pass out. Your dog has a "I'm a dog and not a fat video game nerd" issue. He needs exercise.

EDIT: Just saw the post above mine.

The crate training is great advice bro: follow it to the LETTER as outlined above, I've owned 5 dogs the last 35 years and trained all of them this way: had success with every single one:they were a weimaraner, black lab mix, chocolate lab, boxer mix and border collie mix. NOW that's some seriously hyper breeds much like your lab/golden mix and it CAN be done but you have to be disciplined and EXERCISE that mofo night and day: it's acting out because it wants more time with you and needs to be ran/walked HARDCORE.

Get it in on a schedule and adhere to it. Be the alpha and don't take any shit.(best technique here is when the dog is spazzing out, simply grasp it firmly by the knape of the neck and put it down FIRMLY while repeating a basic command like 'NO'.) Also saw that on the dog whisperer and originally thought Caeser was a mean lil' mofo. WRONG, got my border collie mix puppy a year ago or so and tried it: works great. Be firm, fair and consistent and that dog will come around. Any deviation from the plan and weakness from others (girlfriend, wife, etc....will fuck up the plan: don't stand for it) If everyone isn't on board and pulling in the same direction do everyone a favor and find a new and better home for da pooch. PS: not to be holier than thou, but drugging it isn't the answer because as others have said, once the drugs stop, the shitty behavior will continue.

  • I use two Benadryls, and my beagle sleeps like the dead. Even acts a little dopey the next morning.

  • Treadmill is out; He is scared to death of them.

Dog isn't going anywhere and my work schedule isn't changing.

He is walked 1-2 miles everyday after work.

Go ahead and make more assumptions.

    This

This is the same play they ran earlier, turn the corner and look. Nice back door. Cleaves the alley-oop. Ohh! What a setup off the timeout!

Go ahead and make more assumptions.

    A) He's not "scared to death" of anything: man up and train him to love that effer, like I did for my dog. It can be done but it takes intestinal fortitude.

    B) fine

    C) not good enough: needs to be walked BEFORE work too: that's where treadmill come in

    D) No assumptions....just solid suggestions. Dont' come on here and ask for advice, then shrink from it. We gave you good, solid advice that's tried and true. If you want to be a whiney bitch go to mgoblog.

  • Definitely get it high. Just blow like 4 or 5 hits in its face. It'll relax for sure.

  • I had a Border Collie in Middle/High School. She lived to play with me and my brothers, particularly basketball. We had start leaving her inside because she ran an cornered so hard on the driveway her feet were getting shredded. Didn't bother her and we didn't notice until the driveway was getting painted with her bloody tracks. Left inside the house, she was a wreck, running from window to window barking and tearing apart blinds and such.

Vet said it was likely severe anxiety, watching us play and not being able to be out there. Really, she just wanted to herd the damn basketball.

And that is how Scout got a Xanax script.

  • If you're putting your dog on drugs, you need to get rid of the dog. The dog isn't the problem, you are.

    Rodeo Burger

  • I don't know about drugs but those are signs of serious behavioral issues.... good luck. Likely going to be a long and expensive road to get him set right.
