Anyone else still do pushups???

  • I like to start my day off by doing pushups. I don't normally take into account how many I do but its usually a good amount.

I don't. Depending on what your goals are, I don't see the point in doing body weight stuff like that unless they are really challenging for you (i.e. people just starting out).

  • I have a crappy shoulder, I cant even do a real push up with it. But I do an inverted, sissy as pushup, up against the bathroom counter, that has restored me to about 80% strength and 90% mobility in the shoulder. HUGE improvement.

And now, my kid has brought home an Erg (Concept 2) and i will row my belly off all summer! yay.

  • Even if you do weights often, push-ups do add value.

They're quick to do, you don't need to warm-up, they involve more muscles than a regular bench press, and you can make simple modifications to emphasize different things. About 100 in 3 sets is a good number if you're already pretty fit -- but obviously everyone has different needs / will fail at a different number. If you keep going till you fail, you will absolutely benefit.

I do 100 in 4 sets; 10, 20, 30, 40. Take 60-90 seconds between reps. Just keep adding sets of 10 at the end as your fitness level dictates.

I find it's always helped my bench when I do push-ups every day during the week.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • i love pushups, then again i'm more focused on lean and cut than big and bulky. The majority of my body weight exercises revolves around pushup and pullup variations.

Your average UofM fan and I have something in common, neither of us went to UofM. Though we do share One major difference, I got Accepted.

It looks very nice in my basement. My kid is rock freaking solid. I have tried to find a way to put pics on here without being creepy, but it doesnt work.

She has been using it since last September with the UT rowing team, and the kid is strong. I will be using it every day starting tonight. It goes back to school with her in August (Belongs to the rowing team) so I have to get in as much work out as I can before the middle of August or so. Im planning to be down 20lbs by then.

(lost 5 to my change in diet, and then 5 more to Strep last week.)

Anyways, I have found used Concept 2's on Row2k.com for about 1000bucks plus shipping. I just need a new job and Im going to own one of them bad boys.

Pic of my kid. She is the one on the left, facing the coxswain. (just following board rules!! [haha])

nothing wrong with running and doing some sit-ups and push-ups afterwards... rockon

  • I have been in a major rut at the gym so I started P90X at home which requires very little equipment and pushup variations are the focal point in the chest workout. Anyone have any decent results with that program?

Also, what's that old story about Lawrence Taylor? He never touched a weight in his life and bulked with only pushups and sit ups. Could you imagine having genetics like
    that (if true)?

  • You have to keep at it or you lose the benefits. For example, if I do four on Monday then take a day off to let my muscles recover, I can do five on Wednesday. But if I skip a couple of extra days and don't do them again until, say, Friday, I'll find out that I've actually regressed: I can only do two and a half or three.

I've been doing 3 sets about every other day. So far I've built up to about 25 pushups for each set. What GreenMeany said is true. If I give myself more than one or two days off in between I feel like I really struggle to get back to where I was. I'm not sure what my goal is. Maybe a hundred a day? So 3 sets of 33? Or maybe 30, 30, 40.

Not sure if it's actually bulking me up but I feel good about myself afterwards so there's that.
