They are trying to amp up a niche audience (this is the mother of all comic book flicks) and mass-market it to the biggest audience possible.

I'll see it, but I'm a comic book dork. I expect some good RDJ one-liners, some cool action stuff, and some scenes lifted directly from certain comics. Joss Whedon is also a pretty good writer, so it's not like Michael Bay is at the helm.

I'm not expecting Citizen Kane, nor the Nolan Bat-Universe, which is far more realistic. But I do think it will be fun.

I agree with your analysis but my expectations are zero and I have a feeling that'll be just a typical formulaic blockbuster which doesn't appeal to me.

you know, everyone liked Captain American but i only liked the parts before he was Captain America. With that real fetching brit lady 'n' stuff. I seriously could not handle anything to do with the german side. When they'd do that double arm salute thing it actually embarrassed me for some reason. Like it was so dumb that people would judge me for watching it with them.

This. It's Joss Whedon, so it can't outright suck. Spider-man, on the other hand, is nothing but a quick money grab.

I think if I could change two things about the Avengers, it would be this:

1. Go back in time and fix the Hulk series. It's so disjointed because it's had multiple actors, been rebooted, etc. I wish they could have had some consistency there.

2. Fix Captain America's costume. What the hell happened? It looked so awesomely updated in the C.A. movie, and for the Avengers, they like...tried to take it back to its comic book roots. It looks terrible, whoever made that decision should feel bad about their life choices.

I haven't seen the new costume in Avengers but that is actually something that i liked about the new CA. The costume didn't look all dumb and comic booky.

absolutely not. i did see every movie up until Captain America, but the mere fact that they called him "The First Avenger" is absolutely ridiculous and should be a criminal offense.

I'm torn by the new spiderman, I was a HUGE spiderman fan growing up. Lizard looks awesome in the trailer, but my understanding is they are making spiderman a mutant in this version? Which would be realyl fricking stupid. I'll probably see it anyway though.

Well Rotten Tomatoes has given it a 96% from the critics. I am kind of surprised by this.
