Anyone else think The Avengers will be good?

I think Joss Whedon was the only writing credit. But then his name was under a producer, director, or writing credit at least six times from what I saw.

I did do some googling after I posted and hit surprisingly, there was even an interview with Millar about the Ultimates. He said that he didn't really care that the story was a knockoff since they were all Marvel owned characters anyway. Then he plugged his own stuff. Which is all really good. I've read all the Kick-Ass books. Then Superior (cripple kid makes deal with demon to get superpowers), Nemesis (ultimate villain/bad guy), Supercrooks ( old super villains getting the band back together). All good stuff. Nemesis would make for a sweet movie, but Hollywood would make the good guy win...or play down how much evil was kicking good's ass.

Some of the characterizations are different, notably Thor's. Thor was portrayed as insane in Millar's run. But it was great material.

  • Such a fun movie, couldn't ask for anything more.

It really makes you wonder what they could have done with the X-Men/Wolverine. Such great stories, so many characters to use, and such an incredible central theme. And every director/writer that has touched it has largely ignored all of it. I would love for Marvel to re-acquire the rights to X-Men and do it right.

X Men flicks were ruined because every director only focused on Wolverine.

X1 was decent and started the modern superhero trend. X2 was really good and set up Phoenix which I think would have been great if Singer would have done it. First Class was really good. X3 and Wolverine sucked major balls.

Haven't been following it. Didn't like the last batch, and the third one I saw on Netflix and it was dreadful. The early word I heard on this was that it was a aimed more at teenagers, so I dropped it off the radar. Saw the preview before Avengers, isn't Parker suppose to be nerdy? The dude they have playing him didn't seem nerdy.

I liked the first 2 spider man movies but 3 was just terrible

i agree completely. they did a good job on Wolverine but I also thought storm/cyclopes were all well cast (i also liked the guy the had playing Gambit) but they made it all about Wolverine and that got annoying. Xmen 1 was ok, 2 and 3 were bad and Wolverine's stand alone movie just pissed me off.

You are right, on all counts. They were good because they were good movies. GOOD being the operable word. Iron Man was GREAT. The Avengers was GREAT. They were great because the guys that were given the responsibility of making the movie understood a simple fact. There is a reason the characters have been around for 50+ years. The writing was good, the characters were good, the stories were good. Hence, the fans love them. Why on Earth would you take those characters and stories and ignore what made them great? Something as simple as Wolverine being played by a 6'2" Australian? Why? Is there a shortage of short actors in Hollywood who can play an unhinged angry animalistic superhero?

Wolverine sucked. Bad. However, I will say this. The guy that played Sabertooth (Liev Schriber, I think) did an outstanding job. He always had this ominous evil about him during the movie, and when it came time for him to cut loose, he was downright scary. Then, the ending of the movie came up, and they even screwed that up. The whole "nobody kills you but me" line was laughable, as was the "BACK TO BACK!!!" fight scene with the visual abortion of Deadpool. It pisses me off too.

I thought Jackman was a good Wolverine. When he finally went bezerker in X2 it was a thing of beauty. Halle Berry sucked and the dude who played Cyclops sucked. But then again, they wrote Cyclops as a huge pussy so maybe it wasn't his fault.

Captain America 2, avengers 2 and 3, Black widow 1, Hawkeye 1, Nick Fury 1, the chick played by Robin Sherbotsky 1, janitor who found Bruce Banner and gave him pants 1, have all just been greenlit.

Cyclops was completely misused. He's been at the center of the comics for 40 years, and nowadays is basically the lead character. They turned him into a completely whipped jackass in the movies.

Jackman, aside from his size (too big) was a very good Wolverine. X2 was good. The first one had its moments. Stewart was a very good Xavier.

ya i liked cyclops I thought he was cast well but the character was crappy.

And to the guy that mentioned him, yes the guy that played Sabertooth i thought did a great job. I think the problem with the Xmen movies was that they deviated so much from the origins. Iceman should have been just as old as Cyclops and had a bigger role. Gambit should have been in the second movie. Instead I think they wanted to contrive some romance thing w/ rogue and a iceman and it just fell flat.

Avengers is great because they took time to set up each character in the previous movies. And didn't deviate at all from those characters in the Avengers. Stark is always a witty jackass and cap is always the boyscout. Thor is somewhere in between. Hawkeye is awesome and Black widow is hot (dat ass). I'm just glad they left off ant man that would have been fricking weird.

And that goes back to my point. Why write the leader of the X-Men as a giant pussbag? Even if you don't know the mythology of the comic, would the leader of ANY group be as weak as they portrayed him? Captain America took control of the Avengers and the police force at the end of the movie. He is a leader, he led. Cyclops was the leader, he cried, he got pussified, then he got killed. What. The. Fuck.

And yes, when Jackman unleashed Wolverine, he was outstanding. But the point of his entire character (hell, even the fucking namesake of his character) is he is small, a runt, unassuming to his supposedly more powerful enemies. Then he rips them to shreds and sickly smiles about it. Sabertooth is the big guy, Wolverine is the little guy. Period. That is part of what gives him his anger, his edge. It is why they made Cap a skinny runt who got his ass kicked. He kept that resentment of bullies and his will to lead.

All told, that is why The Avengers will be the most successful movie since Avatar, and might just end up being one of the top 5 grossing movies ever while at the same time remaining true to the core material. And that is why X-Men 1/2 don't stack up.
