Apple did not invent the tablet? say it aint so

The video shows how newspaper company Knight Ridder saw the news of the future and, darn it, I must say that those guys were spot on with their assumptions. However, what they probably didn’t think their little video would do is seriously hurt Apple’s chances of winning the design patent war against Samsung and other Android tablet manufacturers, a war that is heading towards a conclusion these days.

The 1994 Fiddler/Knight Ridder “tablet” shown in the video below created “the same basic visual impression” as Apple’s D’889 patent for the iPad, Judge Lucy Koh decided recently, basically squashing Apple’s last hope of squeezing some money from Samsung or other technology manufacturers.

  • Apple will just have to make their money outside the court room on that one.

Apple didn't invent the PC. That was IBM or Altair
Didn't even invent the mouse. That was Xerox
Didn't invent the personal music player That was Sony
Didn't invent the smartphone That was Blackberry

They did introduce the widely accepted first tablet even if it was pictured by a newspaper years before.

  • Nailed the technological changes, but missed entirely the social and business implications (death of classified revenue in newpapers due to craigslist type sites, lowering of cost barriers to news production when anybody can post to the web and the rise of blogs and news aggregators, etc)

  • This is so ironic. Used to work for KnightRidder. Never heard of this before, but I'm not surprised they failed to capitalize on a new idea/embrace the future. Their primary goal was to maintain the status quo. It was also a KR employee that came up with the idea for USA Today. They shot it down & the rest is history.

Maybe McClatchy (company that bought KR) can sue Apple. lol

  • I'm sure they will try. After all Samsung tried to use 2001 A Space Odyssey as proof of prior art. Maybe they should get their lawyers in the R&D labs. They're way more creative than the people pumping out products.

All points well taken, but Microsoft defined the framework for practical tablet computing circa 2000, and vendors such as HP actually made them. They were heavy and had poor battery life. But they were practical, real tablet PCs with good handwriting recognition. The iPad was nowhere near close to the first practical commercial tablet PC.

  • Tablet PC was a laptop with an integrated stylus touch screen. That appropriately bombed. I wouldn't confuse that to have anything to do with the modern mobile tablets.

  • Strong retort. I must have been thinking of some other product category that was so awesome no one bought one.

It did bomb. However some number, thousands, did sell.

However, I don't understand your theory of computing history. Did you ever use one? The question was what as the first tablet. The Apple Newton was the first practical PDA, but it was real, and it did sell some units, even though its handwriting recognition was ridiculed and it was very large compared to the later Palm.

There was nothing wrong with the stylus touch screen. In fact, in ways it was better than the iPad in terms of usability.

It layered a tablet interface atop a special version of Windows. But the handwriting recognition was excellent, and it was a real computer OS with a real file system.

Number of units sold does not mean you thought of it first. Fanboys usually have trouble with this concept, even though Apple has illustrated it over & over again.

I'd say a working prototype is just a tad different than a prop, but fanboys will be fanboys.

I'm not arguing the first tablet. People have been dreaming up concept products like this for decades. Many people can claim they thought of the concept first. The argument of who is first with regards to Samsung is simply a matter of legal liability.

Any arguments of prior art is them seeking cover for ripping off Apple. It's not like someone at Samsung suddenly remembered they got the idea for their products from a Kubrick movie. Apple can document the iPad development back to 2004. Samsung can only go so far as Android and their realization of the iPhone and iPad in the market.

  • Someone isn't trying to argue that Apple invented the tablet, are they? Apple merely expanded upon an existing idea. Just like every single other product they have released. They do not invent or create.

    Wait a minute!

There is a difference between proof of concept and the first practical application.

I think the Apple Newton was a halfway between concept, with the Newton. It was large, clunky, and had bad handwriting recognition. It was the first PDA.

I really don't want to get into an Apple versus Windows argument, because I care about computing history, and I think the iPad is much more important as a milestone in computing history than what the Windows Tablet PC evolved to be.

But the Windows Tablet PC demonstrated the concept of its time better than the Newton did in its time, simply because hardware had evolved. It was an entirely serviceable handwriting device and it was used in medical and other applications that needed that capability.

We can have a separate conversation about iOS and the "walled garden." My point is the Windows Tablet PC was a very real, usable, commercially available tablet environment circa 2006. It was used in many applications, such as medical back then.

It may be the only time in computing history that Microsoft was ahead of Apple.

Again, did you ever use a Windows Tablet PC?

Actually, AA, before you respond to my further comments:

I think the iPod and the iPhone were inventions. I think the iTunes ecosystem was an invention. An incredible invention.

All inventions are built on previous ideas. Stood on the shoulders of giants.

Apple didn't invent the tablet. Watch any episode of Star Trek: Next Generation and you'll see tablets.
