Appling Clutch In Road Win

  • Chilly said...

Two words to explain why Denzel Valentine won't start at point: Gary Harris

Appling is improving enough at pg that I would bet the farm on Appling/Harris 1/2 next year. Valentine is a swiss Army knife player, 1, 2, or 3. Like Green is a power forward/surrogate secondary pg, I suspect Valentine will backup Dawson and be a small forward/surrogate secondary pg and maybe some minutes at the 2, playing like a shooting guard/surrogate secondary pg. Should Appling and Trice both get into foul trouble or one gets injured next yr... Valentine will be nice to have as a pg option. After next year, lookout... it would not surprise me to see Valentine end up at pg at all down the road.

  • It's not black and white guys and players at this level know that.

Keith is held to higher expectations because of his position and his ability. There should be a lot more made of his bad fouls than if they were made by Kearney lets say.

That's because Keith has a lot more experience and a lot more expectations placed on him at this point in his career.

Do we often forget how young he is? Certainly. Would anyone question the fact that he is going to be a very special player before he leaves here? Probably not.

That being said, he certainly needs to learn from some pretty big mistakes last night because come next season, he isnt going to have Wood or Green to help carry the team. He is going to be the guy that needs to do the carrying when the younger guys make the same learning mistakes he made last night.

  • The two fouls were terrible plays defensively, really boneheaded. They cost us 5 points and put us in a bad situation. That said, nailing every FT down the stretch was clutch and helped to make up for the errors.

As for the T, it was yet another terrible call by an official who should have retired 5 years ago. I thought Appling did the right thing holding onto the rim and swinging himself back. He didn't know where the defenders that he had just blown past were and risked putting himself on his back if he let go immediately with all the momentum he had. That said, these guys need to learn not to do anything remotely controversial around Burr.

  • Yes, those back to back bonehead fouls, including the 3 pointer, were clutch. Upside appears tremendous but he's got a long way to go if he's going to stay a 1.

That's where you and I will disagree... and I think that is where part of the criticism is coming from.

Honestly, he doesnt have that far to go. He has shown the potential and at times he is everything you need form the position and more. He just needs to learn to do it consistently.

  • A lot of the argument in the comments is because we aren't all using the same definition for the word 'clutch.' People read that and thought the headline said he played a fantastic game, but that's not what clutch means. Appling struggled against Minny's zone, he may not have turned it over but he also looked confused out there, clearly got frustrated a few times (dumb fouls, etc.), and overall just didn't have his best game.

Still though, when we HAD to have points, he knocked down his shots. That is, in fact, clutch.

Appling is a 1. That ship has sailed, particularly since Harris arrives to play the 2. Appling is also our best defensive player, despite last night's struggles.

Aping did not have the option to ease into the pg responsibilities. If Korie was still here Keith would back him up and learn instead of being thrown into the fire. That being said, I am with you, Keith is the starting pg next year with Harris at the 2. I expect Keith to really do well as our pg next year.

I happen to like Trice, and he has been a pleasant surprise.
That said, much like many people said before he got here, he does have certain athletic and size liabilities at this level.
I suspect Trice playing major minutes next year will result in MSU having a certain ceiling that doesnt equate with making major national noise. That is why i suspect he wont.
My guess is that Trice will continue to be more of a role player going forward, and will be soon or in the near future be overtaken by others in the backcourt.
No slam on the kid, he is solid, just not elite starters minutes good at a place like here. Great role player and spot minutes logger. Great guy to have on the roster.

  • Appling should stick to a 1. His ball skills are pretty damn good. He doesn't turn the ball over a lot. He's fast and has long arms so he can distribute the ball to the block with ease. He's a damn good defender. And he's good at running the offense. I don't care if he scores. Any scoring is a plus. After years of watching Chris Hill run the offense, I'm very happy with where Appling is for only playing one year. He looks like he's been playing the 1 his whole life. He should stick with it and he'll show promise in the NBA.

  • I think Appling has actually been much more effective at the one because he is so good in transition. I want the ball in his hands on the break rather than having him run the wing. Trice has better vision but doesn't have as much ability in terms of getting into the lane and has shot the ball extremely well this year.

13 points, 3 Steals, 5 assist, ZERO turnovers. Couple bad plays on defense but overall played very solid D. He did this in 36 minutes. Can't ask to much more from a point guard without a true PG backing him up.

How about asking him to cease making stupid fouls on 3 poiint shooters? He did that twice late in the 2nd half for 6 Minny points.

I think it's awfully early to judge Trice and his long term potential, he is a true freshman after all and he's clearly a 4 year player. He doesn't appear to have elite athleticism, but he is a smart kid with a good mind for the game, he's a coach's son, and he has been surprisingly effective when healthy.

You're probably right that he'll get overtaken by some of the studs we have coming in, but I wouldn't count him out either. Point guards who know the game, watch a ton of film and can run efficient offenses don't necessarily need Kalin-level speed and quickness. I see him getting decent minutes throughout his career.

He did that once. The other was a long two. Are you really ragging on Appling after his game last night? If you are going get out on the team about last night it should be that they got out hustled. Outrebounded by 9. Missing layups. Appling played a very solid game last night. The reason we won last night was guard play.

Both were bonehead plays, no question. The bottom line is we won the game and Appling will learn from those mistakes.

He played a solid game by what standards? Listen, I'm not gonna rag on the kid, no one plays up to their potential every night, but Appling struggled for most of the game. He had his moments, great players always do, but he did not play "very solid" compared to his other performances this year.

Appling is a fantastic player and I'm really excited to see what he does the rest of this year and the rest of his time at MSU, but come on, we don't have to pretend that everyone always plays well.

Point guards that arent quick, arent athletic, dont have good size and are cerebral end up at places like Hope or Calvin. That is what you are describing.
I like the kid and think he will help, but i think it unlikely he will ever run the point guard position here as a starter and major contributor. Great guy to have to be sure. But a solid role player at the end of the day.

Kalin was an elite athlete until his senior year, not having his quickness and speed doesn't necessarily mean you're slow and plodding.

I think Trice, physically, could be compared to Cousins - good enough in all areas to be effective, but never going to win games because of athleticism alone. Trice has never seemed to me like a Hope or Calvin-level athlete.

This. The whiny little bitches of tRCMB always need a scapegoat, even after a win. The whole team played down to the Gophers' level last night, and you can't blame Appling for that.

Yeah, Keith gave up a whopping 5 points ( panic ) on 2 fouls. He also had 5 assists and no turnovers. Thornton went 0-5 and jacked up a couple pretty ill-advised 3's. Green and Nix were missing layups like it was their job. Nobody was rebounding. Ya'll haters just need to shut the fuck up and move on.

  • +1 to the pro-Appling crowd who recognize his progression at a new position, his D, his quality minutes.

Additionally, he adds a dimension to the offense with his continually pushing the ball and attacking the rim in transition. He draws fouls and makes a very good percentage on his aggressive drives. He forces the opponent to always get back after a shot, limiting their men going for offensive rebounds. State's rebounding advantage comes in part from the fact that the other teams guards must play the break and not dig for boards.

With a year under his belt he will be even better next year.
