Are the Tigers shopping Alex Avila

  • Few posters on the Tigers board are claiming something is in the works to trade him, perhaps with the Twins?

Doesnt seem valid to me, but who knows. Would seem wierd what with poppa in management with the Tigers

  • Not a chance. Brantley may be gone by the end of the season though as his value is far greater at catcher than outfielder. Avila is blocking his path and we have McCann grooming as well. Brantley + Crosby could bring back a decent 2B.

  • There's no way they're shopping him to the Twins. For one thing, the Twins have zero assets to acquire. Second the Twins already have too many guys that in theory can play catcher. Something doesn't smell right.

  • Please don't speculate

Trade a 25 year old catcher who was the all star starter for the AL last year to a division rival?

Plus his dad is assistant GM

I hear ya, just rampant speculation of the Tigers site that Santios getting called up has something to do with a deal getting made, and Alex's name seems to be the center of attention.

Highly Doubtful. Especially to the Twins.

Though I did hear a rumor of the Tigers throwing some assets at the Astros in an attempt to get Jose Altruve.

Also seems like the Brewers could be shopping players including Grinke, and Marcum.

And who would the Twins give back for a 25 year old catcher who was a 4.9 WAR player last year while making $425 K (510K in 2012)? They have nobody the Tigers should be interested in.

  • lolOne idiot on there has the Twins swapping Joe for Avila...although the more one thinks about that, if the Tigers want to go all in this year, and have major , major dollars to blow, i would take JM in a heartbeat, possibly damaged or not.

Is his name Isiah Thomas? The Tigers would be foolish to even consider that trade.

    sprtnbrn

  • That seems like a reach. Avila is fighting knee problems, can't imagine his value is high. The Twins dealt with the Tigers last year, but that was a waiver deal for Young, who they were desperate to get rid of. That doesn't make a lot of sense.

    Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.

  • Alex Avila is an untouchable player. He's a 25 year old all-star catcher. His dad is Dombroski's right-hand man, and is probably only staying with the Tigers, because he gets to live the dream and make money by watching his son play baseball. Also, you have the best pitcher in the majors, and he really likes to have Avila as a battery mate.

When you consider his intangible value to the team, who is a valuable enough player (at a worthwhile position) to trade straight up for Avila?
    Tulowitzki?
    Kershaw?

Anybody who you can think of would just be a ridiculously bad trade for the other team.

  • Does anyone recall giant black hole the catching position was two years ago. Avila's arrival was a godsend.

I like Avila a lot...and I get what you're saying about the intangibles but c'mon. I think the homerism is strong in this thread.

Avila's #s last year were probably a bit out of norm. His WAR was ridiculously inflated. His career numbers will probably be closer to this year...mabe a little higher. His K rate is horrible. His knees are in bad shape. That being said, I like his defense and Verlander loves him.

Not here to hate but I would trade him if there was a fair offer.

A trade with the Astros seems unlikely. Randy Smith isn't the Tigers GM anymore.

And who do the Twins have that would be a fair offer? Alexi Casilla plays at a position of need but costs more, is older, and is basically replacement level. Danny Valencia doesn't play at a position of need. Their starting pitchers are terrible. That's why Avila to the Twins makes zero sense.

I never said anything about the Twins. Just saying I would deal him for a fair offer. Either a MI or SP.

Someone mentioned Altuve from the Astros....maybe throw in a low to mid prospect and try to get Wandy Rodriguez too?
