Armstrong fans...will you admit your hero was a fraud?

  • Or will you just spin, deny, or turn a blind eye?

  • Armstrong actually faked taking steroids to elude drug dealers... Whoops, wrong athlete

    Victory for MSU!

  • If all the cyclists were drugging, then they are all frauds, no?

Seems to me you'd be a fraud if you WEREN'T on drugs

  • I'll bite...

I will admit he was a fraud. I admit to defending him and arguing in his favor several times. I believed him.

I never called him my hero, or idolized him in any way. To me, he was an athlete that overcame an incredible fight with cancer, and for that I appreciated his efforts. I never really followed bike racing, and still don't, but I rooted for him because of 2 things: he was an American winning in France of all places, and because he had cancer. I guess I would have rooted for any other person who fought cancer too.

Regardless, I admit that the person I rooted for was a fraud. I wish him well in the next phase of his life.

  • Guys, i have an admission.... I'm Lance's doctor... And well. I'm not really a docotor. We met on line when he was looking for a good way to get steroids and well... I Te'oed him. They were all placebo's. He wasn't really a cheat, although he wanted to be. Hopefully no one from the MSM picks this up.....

  • You know who really came out of this whole deal golden was the frigging drug testers for the tour de farce. How weak are they at their jobs? Everybody in the whole deal cheats and they have to rely on Oprah to do their job for them. The whole sport makes pro wrestling look good.

It's a town full of losers. I'm pulling out of here to win!

Same here. I thought the doping accusations were because he was an American dominating the Tour de France. I believed him all along until the American riders started rumors that he did.

For what he overcame, and to dominate the sport the way he did, it was fun rooting for the guy.

This is still a great commercial:

  • he is a fraud. doesn't change the fact that he did a lot of good for a lot of people's lives and raised millions of dollars for cancer. huge dbag but I find it hard to hold a grudge against someone who positively impacted so many people even if it was a fraudulent way to acquire the money

I think you're missing the point. The OP, and the mile long threads on the subject, live on the straw man that if you've ever asked for an admission or more evidence at any point in the last decade, Lance is your hero.

Yes, his "image", like Tiger's squeaky clean one, was quite obviously a fraud, if only for the proven fact that he was an arse at best to many people who dealt with him. Always was.

My hero is now the guy who finished 40th who hasn't been busted, who was probably doping but nobody cares to dig into his alternate samples at this point.

  • I defended him, and he turned out to be a fraud... Seems like a douchebag thread

I felt the same way until I read a well researched and documented article that showed that Live Strong doesn't actually do much of anything other than act as a PR firm for Lance Armstrong, and he uses it as a personal expense account. They don't give money to research at all. They said that as long as they spent millions per year burying people who accused Lance (correctly), then they were "fighting against cancer". Lance bankrupted people...he's sued so many people, he didn't know how many. Even when given names of people he sued, he told Oprah he couldn't confirm or deny.

This is exactly true; Livestrong is not what it was reported to have been. When you hear that Livestrong gave hundreds of millions to cancer research, that statement is just plain incorrect. It was all about "awareness" which is fine, but it was more of a way for Armstrong to perpetuate this myth of cleanliness and keep his detractors at bay.

  • Meh, I thought he was juiced back then and I still think he is the best cyclist of his generation. Not sure why I should personally feel outraged by something 100% of the riders were doing..

  • The guy rode a bike. Who the hell cares? I never watched one second of bike riding.

Mission statement was not to fund 'cancer research' it was to provide support to people with cancer

Yeah, congratulations to Lance Armstrong for taking steroids and still managing to look like a little pussy.

    That was his greatest accomplishment.
