Arnett probably won't be back next year -new LSJ beat writer

  • According to Graham Couch of the LSJ. He was on Mad Dog in the Morning and was asked about Arnett. He said that there is a disconnect between him and the coaches and that's why he isn't playing. Since he still has a red shirt year because of the waiver he can transfer and sit out with out losing a year of eligibility.

It doesn't shock me, I'm sure Arnett wants to play.

  • if true, that really unfortunate. i was really looking forward to watching him make plays, yet i really couldn't understand why he wasn't playing more.

  • If true, that sucks. I always wanted a happy ending to the story, but as the season went on, it wasn't looking too good. He's still only a soph, so a little patience is in order. "Disconnect" doesn't sound good.

  • I agree. I think a lot of MSU fans have high hopes for him. It's too bad that him and the coaches aren't seeing eye to eye, if true. Hopefully they can work it out because he does seem like a very good athlete that you don't just bring in year in and year out.

It seems like a pretty bold statement for a LSJ beat writer to make.

  • That's sad to hear.

He probably won't be needed as much next year with 4 wideouts getting significant playing time this year, and all are returning. We really needed him to provide a receiving threat this year but that didn't work out.

No reason to nuke this if it was stated on the radio by an LSJ journalist. If the OP made this up, then yes, it should be nuked.

  • I wonder if Arnett would have a major problem with taking his RS next year and taking a year to just work on getting better/stronger.

Right now, its just a numbers game. Arnett being a SO is behind a lot of players on the depth chart right now. If he were to use his RS though, he could come back as a junior in 2014 with Fowler gone, Lippett and Mumphrey both seniors and Burbridge a junior. Who knows? If Burbridge were to go pro, 2015 could be Arnett's as our #1 wideout.

    Just a thought.

  • Hope it's not true after the ordeal to bring him here. It would be his 3rd school, not exactly a good omen for pro scouts. I trust our coaches, if Arnett was good enough to contribute, he'd be out there.

  • did he actually say whats in the title or just that there was a disconnect?

If he's good enough to be in the NFL it wont really matter how many schools he goes to, look at Chad Johnson.

Still, it's probably better for him to stay with one program and find some direction. Any news on his dad's health?

Agree. He's definitely low on the depth chart with the emergence of Burbridge and Mumphrey and the resurgence of Lippett. And then we have Madaris and Andre Sims in reserve.

Maybe he's not as good as he thinks he is and the "disconnect" is a fancy way of saying "the coaches want me to work hard and earn playing time"?

I was just thinking the same thing. He could be a great guy just looking for the right fit but, what is known about him so far is a series of YouTube hat game videos with fake verbals and two (possibly three) schools attended.
Like I said before; I don't know him and he could be a great guy but that track record could raise eyebrows.

Mad Dog asked him about Arnett and he said that he probably won't be back next season. Sorry if it's not a perfect quote, but he said probably won't be back.

He didn't say any of that, this is just the opinion of a guy that is around............sometimes.

  • Obviously something is wrong there. And it's not about his game. Either there's an injury or a player issue.

Whatever. I'd rather he leave than get special treatment he doesn't deserve. MSU can always get quality receivers and it's not like there's a void at that position.

    dagomike

  • I hope that's not true. If he transfers, he'll have to sit out a year... which would force him to be even more patient. Hope he stays and tears it up next year.

An example that Couch used was early in the season the coaches said he needed to learn the offense / playbook (I don't remember exactly what he said), and Arnett said that he already knew it.

Knowing the playbook and earning playing time are two different things.

No doubt, but the point of the example is to show the disconnect.

I agree with this. Seems like personnel announcements should be made by the coaching staff or SID, not the LSJ beat writer. Maybe Crouch ought to learn how to keep his mouth shut (especially since he's a newbie).

  • Well, I agree that all Spartan fans want this story to have a happy endinig for the young man, his family and the MSU football program. He seems like a good kid who made a tough decision to be closer to his dad who is sick. That's says a lot about the young man. I hope the football issues can be worked out as I would love to see this kid on the field in the green and white.

It was clearly his opinion, not reporting a fact. It wasn't the best statement to make, but I don't think he crossed the line. If he wrote an article about it, or put it in print in any way, then it'd be different.

    ChadMSU07

  • Didn't get playing time early. Coaches blew this up IMO.
