Arthur Ray does not make 105-man roster

  • I overheard at the spring game some coaches yelling at each other to get ARJ the **** out of the game before he hurts himself.... I was surprised to hear that. Then ARJ was deciding to play or not after spring ball according to a few tweets.... I'm not sure how effective he would be and I heard there was some speculation that his conditioning wasn't where it needed to be. --I'm a huge ARJ fan, helped raise almost 2k for him by selling some signed photos maybe 4 yrs ago on here. Being a cancer survivor myself I truly was amazed and happy about him making it back... I believe he's a grad student but not 100%, going off memory.

Only thing is I wish MD may have handled the announcement better. I love MD and the program but the one thing I think he has to improve on is his communication to media, fans, alum, etc.... Pretty petty complaint! Lucky. It's like the one complaint I have about my wife is she doesn't put enough spices in the food... very lucky with MD and wife.

  • I figured everyone knew this was coming. MD all but announced this a few days ago.

  • It is a little heartless though, they couldn't take one less walk-on to give him a spot?

  • Once Burbridge and Mills qualified, they probably needed the scholarship.

    4. So what's going on with Arthur Ray Jr.?

Yeah, this is something I haven't necessarily read a lot about, but is a pretty uncomfortable side-plot. Every good Spartan knows Ray's story: after signing his LOI in 2007 he started chemo on a cancerous growth in his leg and didn't enroll until the Spring of '08. He then faced a reinfection that forced numerous more surgeries and missed the 2008, 2009, and 2010 seasons. All through this time Dantonio and MSU stuck by Ray, and in 2011 he was healthy enough to see the football field. He got a (ceremonial, but nonetheless) start against Youngstown State and saw the field in two other blowout games. He also graduated, and won a handful of awards for his battle back to the field. A truly inspiring story. That now gets awkward.

See, Ray wants to play his 6th, and maybe 7th, year of eligibility at Michigan State. Dantonio, somewhat understandably, seems reluctant to give a 6th year to a player who has already graduated and isn't currently breaking into MSU's 3 deeps at any position. This situation raises questions about what exactly a school owes an athlete who's struggled with a non-athletics based injury that has hurt the athlete's past and current prospects at playing time. Do they owe five years, until the player graduates, or as many as the NCAA grants the player?

Based on what we know right now (ray's comments from a couple weeks ago, the media finding out via the roster release, and Ray not being the one to announce it) it seems like it probably wasn't is decision. That doesn't mean it's not what is best both for him and for the football team though. Ray may very well know in his head that it's time to move on, but it doesn't mean his heart's ready.

He's busted his ass over the past 5 years and it's disappointing to see it end this way. It would have been great to see him take his final steps off the football field next year in Pasadena as a starter and All-Big Ten player, but that's not how his story is going to play out. He's a great kid that can do great things, unfortunately it appears they won't be on the football field.

Agree with the sentiment. But, even if this displayed a chink in the armor of a kid who defied all odds and maybe blindly thought he could defy more, I'm perfectly fine with taking a hit on the scholly and letting it (his playing time) die a natural death.

    Tough call though.

I thought Ray already got his degree.

If he got his degree and was able to start a football game, that's pretty good.

Best of everything to a true spartan warrior! Wish they could make room for him...sigh.

This makes the most sense. How much PT is ARJ going to get at OG in the next season or two? We only graduate one OG after 2012 and it sounds like Allen is going to get PT no matter what.

General question not necessarily replying to this quote:

Would they have dropped him from the roster to potentially protect him from getting injured if he did play? Not trying to put a "slappy" spin on it but I am surprised to hear this news after he has been with the team so far.

He was going up against a pretty vicious DL. May not have been up to the challenge.

  • I see alot of sunshine blowing in here. Ray wanted on that roster and MD said, no. How can you spin this as a mutual decision?

I love coach but he made the wrong call.

Kind of a win at all costs mentality, having one less walk-on isn't going to make a difference.

I'm sure he's fine. This had been coming for a while. Dantonio has been deflecting questions on him since spring ball. As previous poster said, it was most likely a mutual decision. He had his opportunity last year to show that he made the comeback and he did just that. If he isn't on the depth chart and helping the team win games, I don't think it serves much of a purpose for him to continue when he's already accomplished what he set out to do.

He's a great Spartan. Best of luck to him going forward.

    I think you nailed it.

Of course we all wish him the best to succeed in the future, with or without football in the picture. We all love Arthur and I'm sure that this decision was made with both parties understanding the consequences of it.

It's not about roster #s, it's about scholarship numbers. MD & staff stuck with Arthur through his entire ordeal. He'd have to apply for a 6th year of eligibility but still has not been able to break into the 2-deeps.

Meh, I think MD has stuck with ARJ through thick and thin, something that a lot of other coaches may never have done. The kid had made his comeback, graduated, and won the hearts of mine as well as all other Spartans I know.

At some point however MD has to look out for others personal interests, as well as what is best for the Michigan State University football.

85 scholarship limit. 105 player roster.

Ray got his degree, got world class rehab, got to play in a game.

What he lost out on was several years of training with Coach Manne and several years of learning the right position technique required for D1 football. Like another poster mentioned, he say Ray with Conway and Ray looked small. That's what happens when you are having surgeries and chemo while the other folks competing for your position spend all that time with speed / strength / position coaches.

I hope Mr. Ray has a long life and does well in whatever career he chooses.

  • I am not trying to sound heartless but it's time for Arthur to move on to the next phase of his life. He did better than most people as he received a scholarship to play football at a BCS conference school as well as receiving a degree from a world class university and walking away with some nice mommentos from being a member of this team. He will always be a Spartan and his perseverance at overcoming his cancer as well as being able to suit up and play in a few games is and will forever more be an inspirational story.

With all that being said, the facts are his career will go no further than the college level. MSU and Dantonio honored their obligation to this young man by developing him and educating him into the young man he is today. In all honesty Arthur Ray is not going to provide much in the way of an on-field contribution this year. The talent on this team has surpassed him to the point that scout team reps need to go to younger offensive linemen. Is he hanging around just to be a member of a team that could potentially end up in Pasadena or is it his and the coaches belief that he can truly contribute. If he is just going to hang around then he needs to move on to allow someone else the chance to compete. The coaches have obviously notified him that his contribution will add little to no value.

There are other ways that Ray can still be associated with this team and program that are not playing related. There have been a couple of former MSU players whose careers were cut short by injuries, but they stayed as members of the team by playing music in practice. If any of these young men had aspirations of becoming football coaches at a high school level what better opportunity to glean some knowledge by listening and watching Dantonio and how he does things.

    Spartan4ever

  • From a purely football prospective, this is the proper move.

From the human interest prospective, it would have been nice to see if Arthur could get a crack at getting some playing time.

Coach D was put in a tough spot on this one and I'm not sure what the answer would be to make all parties involved happy.
