Athlon ranks Izzo #1

  • Not sure if it's been posted. Getting respect.

  • Great props for Coach Tom. Well deserved! King1 thumbsup

But for a laugh, check out what they said in the first sentence about Bo Ryan: "First, we should note the above record does not include Ryan’s 353 wins and four national championships at Division III Wisconsin-Platteville." Sadly, no flopping mention at all.

  • Roy Toy and Coach K have won multiple titles since our 2000 title and are very close in final four trips and better at winning their conference.

So, results wise this is bullshit.

Love Izzo more than all you guys put together, would bury hookers for him while constructing his alibi, but this is a bit off.

  • They speak of the results Izzo gets out of the players he's had to work with. Calipari and Coach K and Ol' Roy have not built shiat. OK, Coach K has..but a lot of the National top ranked programs have been built on a foundation of NBA lottery picks and Izzo has built something with his bare hands and the help of a few players whose character fit in his system..

Athlon is nothing but drivel usually, but this article says something of substance.

I surely wouldn't pick any coach over Tom Izzo. shrug Would you?

It also talks about his ability to get the most out of his players. I think he nearly always maximizes the team talent and gets them to peak at the right time.

I agree, all the players we're recruiting now were born around '94-'96. All they know is MSU is the most consistently successful program in the B1G. If they stick around they'll play in the Final Four and they'll always be in a marquee match up in the non-conference schedule. I think Izzo is finally going to start seeing recruiting dividends for all the success we had in the 2000's

Izzo is a great guy who is a good coach. Part of the reason he is ranked so high is because of his likeability. He's got that quirky raspy voice thing going for him and the media just adores it.

Obviously his on the court success is good, but like Pylon said, others have been better. That includes Coach Cal.

Yup. I've thought this for awhile now as well. Players only know what they've seen in their lifetimes. And in their lifetimes, the Michigan State program and Izzo have been boss. (They're also going to know UNC, Duke, UK, UConn, etc. as marquee programs.) That starts to pay off in recruiting bigtime.

Assuming Izzo maintains his success, even bigger dividends will come when the generation who was 7-14 in the Mateen era start being the dads, uncles, older cousins, high school coaches, AAU coaches, etc. of top prospects. Then, not only will have Izzo been a top coach for those kids' lives, but their mentors will have those indelible memories of MSU as a championship program.

This is just crazy talk. Calipari has 1 NC same as Izzo. Calipari has vacated wins twice -- that's 2 times more than Izzo. On what planet is he a better coach? You could put Roy, Coach K in that bracket -- but Calipari??? (Don't tell me -- he gets his kids to play with great chemistry, right?)

If you were born and brought up a Kentucky fan or are Calipari's nephew or something, at least let us know so we can disregard your comments.

Well, he does get his kids to play with great chemistry...think of the turnover year to year on that squad and he's still been able to put out a national title contender on a consistent basis, including last years dominant team.

That's simply not enough. Izzo beats Calipari even on the chemistry scale. If that's all it took, MSU would have the NC last year, not Kentucky.

With all the great recruits, great chemistry, NCAA violations, and even after you include vacated wins, Calipari still has 1 NC, same as Izzo.

Cal is given players on a platter. Personally I would put Coach K as #1, as I think him and Izzo are probably the only ones near the top that still do things the right way.

But hey, if admiring a cheater is a good thing, then Calipari is a man to root for.
