Bad blackjack luck at Blue Chip Saturday night

  • Went down there to see a concert, and decided to play a little blackjack to kill some time before we went in to see the show.
Sat down at a 15 dollar table with 100 bucks, figuring i will play for 45 minutes or so then go in.
Well, i lasted about two minutes. Pushed with a 20 on the first hand, to the dealers 20. Wife walks over and says," lets go have a drink before the show" so i bet 50 on the next hand and get an 11, dealer has 5 showing so i double up. I get a five, i am like darn, but he will probably bust. He flips over a face card for 15, then draws a friggin 6 for 21.
Anyhow 2 hands and the party is over. Quickest beating of any sort i have taken on the blackjack table. I am frankly glad the wife came over, probably saved me 4 or 5 hundred more.grumble

  • I was at Gun Lake Saturday night. There are only maybe 10 blackjack tables (maybe 15??), and four of them had either $50 or $100 minimums. Shockingly, they were all empty. I couldn't believe it. The lowest table was $25, and then they finally opened up a few $15 tables when people where just standing there waiting.... it was ridiculous.

What ever happened to the $5 talbes? You could sit there for a few hours and have some fun with $150-200. Now, that's literally 3 hands.

By the way, I came home up about $250. Sorry for your loss....

I've found the ultimate time killer/drink refresher in Vegas is horse racing. Make sure you've got a bunch of tickets in front you, you yell every so often and keep the waitress well tipped and your drink/$ ratio works out pretty well.

In terms of table games, I was always partial to 3 Card Poker because the optimal strategy is pretty brain dead (Q/6/4 or better) so you can be pretty blitzed and still play a decent game.

The only time i have been to the Gun Lake casino was on our way back from Bob Seger at Van Andel a little while back.
Popped in there, grabbed 200 worth of chips and in about an hour payed for our dinner at the Chop House, and the Seger tickets with about an extra hundred for good measure on top of it.
I usually( only play 2/3 times a year with couple hundred bucks) win or lose 100 or so before i get bored or the wife does playing slots. That night at Gun Lake just got lucky for a good stretch. The other night at Blue Chip reminded me why a couple or three nights a year is plenty..lol

casinos in the mountains in Colorado have $2 craps, .50 roulette and $3 blackjack Monday-Thursday

$2 craps with 10X odds is fucking amazing

  • Yeah thread is tl;dr but you shouldn't have started out with only 100 dollars on a 15 dollar min table. Plus, you shouldn't have put down 50 on one hand. You pretty much suck at blackjack from the sounds of it. I wouldn't do it again.

Ten dollar tables were all busy. And i wasnt going to play long anyhow. It was about 7:15 when i sat down and concert started at 8.

Btw, i would bet 50 bucks a hand all day long with an 11 and the dealer showing a 5, wouldnt you? And double it?
Give me all that action i can have.

    Mudjin harbor

  • I wouldnt have had 50 dollars down in the first place. That was over half your bankroll. You don't bet half your bankroll unless you want to lose all your money.

    Keith Stone

  • It wasnt half my bankroll . I just didnt want to play long enough one way or the other to buy more chips than that .Actually wasnt going to gamble at all but we had forgotten Michigan City was an hour behind and had a little unexpected time after dinner to kill.
Wife went to play slots for a while and i just watched for a while trying to find a seat, she came over after i had just played only one hand, so i decided to step up a couple of hands before i left. 5 dollar bet or 500 dollar bet, it was unlucky to get beat with my cards and his cards.

If I'm not mistaken, you said you sat down at a 15 dollar table with 100 dollars. (100 dollars is your bankroll, welcome to the world of gambling) I believe 50 dollars is half of 100, but I could be wrong. You didn't have bad luck at the blackjack table, you had bad skill.

I was at gun lake Saturday round 11PM. They had 1 $10 table, 2 or 3 $15, and a bunch of empty 25, 50, and 100. I don't get it. If you want to bet $50, you can do it on a $10 minimum table. I had a couple friends interested in playing $5, but not $10.

45 minutes at the table, left up $75. Women next to me was probably down $250. That's what she gets for doubling down on an 11, with dealer showing an 8.

This. I can already tell you are much smarter than the OP.

EDIT: I don't know why casinos feel the need to open up any tables higher than 20 bucks really. No one goes to the 50/100 dollar tables... (I've never even seen them when I go)

Table games the best odds are blackjack, craps, and baccarat. Craps and Baccarat optimal betting strategy (Bank, Come line) are boring, but they limit your losses. Being blitzed during blackjack can be bad.

I didn't see the $10 table, and I looked for about 1/2 hour. After midnight, several of them got cheaper, and after 2, they all went down.

Wrong, not to sound cocky, but i am quite financially secure, if wanted to, i could have played 100 dollars a hand until the next morning, and probably a lot longer and not gotten hurt enough to bother me, even with terrible luck. When the wife came over i had played 1 hand and had pushed, so i said hey, lets play a couple of hands for 50 bucks and then get up, if i win, i win, if i dont i dont. It was more a time/interest/have a drink with the wifey type thing.Gambling 5 or 50 bucks a hand is all about what you can afford to lose(if you lose) has nothing to do with strategy. I mean if i was betting 500 hundred a hand i am still gonna hit 16 with a face showing, same as i would on a 5 dollar bet..lol

I could have not doubled and still had 50 bucks left, but doubling on that bet was the smart play, i just got beat. It happens.
I am well aware that at a 15 dollar table, and 100 bucks, in 6 hands i could be finished( and losing or winning 6 hands in a row isnt unusual).
If i had been prepared to just gamble the other night, i would have started with a good bit more money to weather a possible cold run in the cards. But i wasnt, we went to see a show.

  • I guess we are just on different pages with this.
My odds on that 50 dollar bet were the same as they are on any 1 dollar bet before you get dealt any cards about 52% against you, 48% with you( or thereabouts, depending on where you are playing) I think your just confused as to why i would bet 50 bucks when i only cashed for 100 dollars worth of chips. My answer is that my odds were exactly the same no matter what dollar amount i wagered. If the wife hadnt come up, i would have bet 15, doubled it, so lost 30, and still had 70 left , kept gambling and who knows, might have lost the other 70 in 5 more minutes, or might not have.
If i had won that hand( the odds were with me) i would have got up a 100 dollar winner.
Either way, i am fine with it, just didnt like my luck on that one hand because i chose to play for just a short while.
Either way, i dont take getting beat personally, i learned a long, long time ago that if you have any reason to be concerned losing money, you shouldnt sit down in the first place.

Actually, the longer you play, the greater chance you have of losing.

$10 table was way in the back, and it was packed, and people were waiting. I was begrudingly about to sit at the $15 (I just graduated law school - I'm no tanner), when two seats opened up and were immediately grabbed. The annoying this is the lady next to me was playing 15 or 20 a hand, but at the $10 minimums.

Casinos know what they're doing, but there's got to be a reason to have a $25/50 table open when people are itching to get into the $10 table.

If you have never seen anybody at 50/100 dollar tables, you dont get out/around much....at all.

Be aware also that just because you are sitting at a 10 dollar table this doesnt mean that is what everybody is betting, its just the MINIMUM allowed.
Not so much at the Indian casino's around here, but in the Caribbean and elsewhere, its very common to see 200-500 dollar bets on a 10 or 20 dollar table. There are many that go around looking to see what the maximum bet on a table is not what the minimum is, even though you may find this hard to believe.

Years back i was sitting at a 25 dollar minimum table( the cheapest) at the casino on Cable Beach outside Nassau, and this guy playing next to me was playing 1,000 dollars a hand( sometimes more) and was hot as a firecracker, i am sure there were other tables with larger minimums, he just liked flashing his money at a cheaper table where more people were playing and watching. I gotta admit, i am glad he did, i had fun watching him myself.
