Bell, Gholston, Sims...who returns?

  • CoachedByDuffy said...

NFL teams value college CB's who have played a lot of man-to-man coverage. I'm sure Darqueze will consider declaring early for the NFL draft. I feel that he should stay for his Sr. season which could put him into the 1st round in the 2014 draft.

We said the same about Adams this year, didn't we. lol

Lot of factors here, no doubt.

The MSU Jrs. who are most likely to declare for the NFL draft in this order :
    1. Le'Veon Bell
    2. Dion Sims
    3. Darqueze Dennard
    4. William Gholston
    5. Isaiah Lewis
    6. Max Bullough
Note : None of them are currently projected to be drafted in the 1st round.

What is this based on? A guess?

None of those guys get drafted in the top 2 rds this year.

Darqueze is maybe a 6th 7th get real people.

  • Bell, Gone.

Sims, 60/40 Gone. Problem is, if he has a big game at Minn, we win and he has a big bowl game, I feel that moves to 90/10 Gone.

    Gholston stays.

Dennard scares me, really hope he stays.

    Because he's white.

+1 for having the balls to say it. It's the perception most people have but are afraid to share.

I'm pretty sure he said based on likelihood to declare, not necessarily who would get picked highest.

I do bell is slower then dirt by nfl rb standards. He gets rocked in blitz pick up and his hands and vision are average. If he leaves now theres a chance he doesnt even make a roster.

wow way trash our best offensive player. I'd love to see your athletic skill and get hurdled by bell

We were just discussing this a week or two ago. If I had to guess, I'd say that the Bullough family as a whole understands that the long-range plan includes coaching once the playing days are over. If you want to coach, you have to have the degree. Easier to get it now.

I think it would be awesome for bullough to stay and get picked by the bears next year. And learn under urlacher

Lol get his dick out of your mouth i never said he wasnt a good college player just that he has some major holes in his game that he can still improve on before he throws away his free degree and final year of eligibillity.

  • I posted this breakdown in another thread :
I talked with my friend who is an NFL scout. He said that none of the MSU Jrs. have had the kind of season that would project them to the 1st round of the 2013 NFL draft.
Here are his comments on some of the Spartan Jrs. along with my thoughts :
Le'Veon Bell - Good all around college back but his lack of breakaway speed will downgrade him on draft day. Projected round 3 to 5.
My thoughts : Likely that Le'Veon will declare for the draft. Even some members of the MSU staff feel that he will declare early. RB's have a short shelf life. Le'Veon has nothing left to prove or gain by staying for his Sr. year.
William Gholston - Hasn't met expectations this season. No doubt about his athleticism and natural size but still inconsistent and raw in his technique. He would be a workout warrior at the NFL combine which could get him drafted at the end of the 1st round where there would be playoff caliber teams willing to take him and spend time developing him and not need him to play right away. Draft staus based more on potential than production.
My thoughts : William loves MSU and college life. I think he will come back for his Sr. year.
Max Bullough - Having the best season of all the MSU Jrs. Great football IQ, great character and a team leader. Has excellent defensive instincts and makes plays. Projected round 2-3.
My thoughts : Max is a true Spartan and knowing how the Bullough family values education, I think he will come back for his Sr. season and earn his degree.
Darqueze Dennard - Athletic CB who has coverage skills but not necessarily a shut-down corner because he doesn't have elite make-up speed. Doesn't always come up in run support as you would like. Hasn't been as consistent in coverage as you would like but NFL teams value CB's who can play man-on-man coverage. Projected round 2-4.
My thoughts : I think he will consider declaring early for the draft but another year in college would benefit him.
Dion Sims - Runs pretty well for his size. The ? is can he get deep on the seam routes against NFL Safeties. Can use his size to set up in the short zones and keep defenders away from the ball with his big body. Has big, soft hands and can snatch the ball out of the air at times. Still some ? about his desire and tenacity as a blocker. NFL teams are placing more value on big athletic TE's like Antonio Gates and Rob Gronkowski. Projected round 3-5.
My thoughts : The ankle injury set him back. It would be beneficial for him to return for his Sr. year. The injuries he suffered the last 2 years (broken wrist, ankle) may have him thinking about declaring early for the draft to avoid further injuries in college.
Isaiah Lewis - Hasn't played as well this season as he did last season. Seems to have too many lapses in concentration and coverage. Has been susceptible to play action fakes and comes up too quickly in run support which breaks down the called coverage. Good tough tackler who plays hard. NFL teams are placing more value on the S position because of the athletic TE's who are coming into the league. Projected round 3-5.
My thoughts : He really needs to come back for his Sr. season.
Note : The draft projections are still based on in-season observations and are far from being finalized.

Gholston comes back...needs rebuild draft stock. Sims...I haven't figured this one out yet. Bell...70/30, he leaves. If he leaves, I predict he goes to Green Bay, Arizona, or Cincinnati in the 3rd, maybe 2nd. I don't buy this "12th best RB nonsense".

Too slow for the NFL. I think he should be a TE in the NFL not a RB.

Don't know if this is true or not, but it makes sense to me. Max is a pretty smart kid. A perfect future would be to build that resume:
    * Continue to learn under Nar-dawg
    * Ideally lead this team to a special season in 2013
    * Earn some All-B1G accolades at his position
    * Graduate with a degree
    * Get drafted, have a cup of coffee in the NFL

Then establish a career in coaching. He's a natural leader. Could definitely see him as a DC in a college program in 10-15 years.

But to answer the OP - my guess is Bell and Sims go pro if Roushar returns. If MSU gets a new high-level OC, perhaps they stay and shoot for a stellar season (ahem... Rose Bowl, cough-cough...).

3rd-4th round picks as Jr, with a disappointing season for both the team and individuals.

    MSUSTATE

  • We lose Bell and Sims OR Gholston, but not both. That's just my gut feeling. Roushar isn't going anywhere, and Bell has hinted at his displeasure with play calling this year. That said, he'd prob leave no matter what.

Dennard hadn't even crossed my mind before this thread. Scary. He might be more inclined after he saw J5 destroy his future this season.

Bullough will not leave MSU early. The phrase "bleeds green" gets thrown around a lot, but never has it been more appropriate than with a kid like that.

Get over it. Many great college players don't even make it on an NFL roster or last that long. Where's Greg Jones these days, is he back on a roster? I don't know.

As far as athletic skills, getting hurdled by Bell; enjoy the college highlights. If he tries that much in the NFL he will get blasted by the Defense.

You have to remember these rookies aren't just competing with the number ones in the NFL. They are competing with all the twos, threes and fours already established in the NFL. Those guys have been honing their skills and adjusting their game to the faster speed of the NFL for a few years. The speed of the NFL is very fast and the competition very high.

  • Sims kinda owes Dantonio and MSU a little bit for sticking by him and giving him a scholie after the crap that come down envolving him in the Detroit Board of Ed computer thefts. Lots of D1 programs would have dropped him like a hot potato. I think it was Miami that did drop him.
