Sims kinda owes Dantonio and MSU a little bit for sticking by him and giving him a scholie after the crap that come down envolving him in the Detroit Board of Ed computer thefts. Lots of D1 programs would have dropped him like a hot potato. I think it was Miami that did drop him.

CBD brings up a really interesting point re: Bell that I hadn't considered. Conventional wisdom always seems to be - his stock was hurt this year (since early on he was projected as one of the top RBs on the board), he needs to come back to improve it.

Um. I don't know where you get your conventional wisdom. It's universally known and has been repeatedly stated that an extra year would do absolutely nothing to improve his stock and could in fact be a huge risk. That's been stated about 6 other times in this thread alone.

"Universally known" by the RCMB "wisdom"??? The guy has been good for us this year-- except for the fact that he consistently misses blitz pick-ups that will cause your QB to be killed in the NFL, has been inconsistent in pass catching and does not do particularly well in "manufacturing" yardage. If our OL improves next year (and with Jackson and Fou coming back, one would assume that would be so), Bell's stock will improve significantly running behind a line that actually opens holes.

However, when you look at it from his perspective, how is he going to improve it by coming back? Scouts aren't dumb. Some of the ways they think seem antiquated to me, but they're not dumb. Bell could have had a BETTER year with a healthier, more consistent OL and passing game, but he's still had a good year and the tape doesn't lie - he's a skilled, agile, big RB who can play the game.
Bell's stock was going to be hurt at the combine regardless of whether he ran for 2400 yards this year or 1400. He's simply not going to showcase elite speed. Is the 40 time overrated for the RB position? In my opinion, hell yeah it is. But Bell coming back next year isn't going to change the fact that he'll probably run in the 4.7 range and that's going to hurt his stock rather significantly.
Add in the fact that another year (behind a relatively shitty OL) will put more wear and tear on him and risk additional injury and I'm starting to think a lot differently about this than I did when I woke up this morning.
The moment is eternal

Always ready to defer to D.Wags on most all issues, but not necessarily here. Sure, you want what's best for the student-athlete. But this is a two way street.
Some gratitude for being on "the stage" and the faith that the coaches showed in Mr. Sims in dark days is not inappropriate to consider in the mix. I'll admit, my bias is that all athletes should finish all four years at MSU and get a degree. Every one with very limited exceptions. I love the answer Red Berenson gives to those who talk about his hockey players leaving early for the EnAchEll. He says that the player has made a commitment to play for four years and he expects the player to live up to it, but if he's really ready for the Big Show, he's going to drive him to the airport. Even a SCum can say something true now and then.

That only works for high round draft picks and NFL stars. Getting 4-5 guys drafted in the 3rd-6th rounds doesn't mean squat - marginal programs like Arizona St., Maryland, Texas Tech, etc. get that may guys drafted every single year.
Javon Ringer was a higher profile guy in college and put up better stats vs. Leveon. How many 4-/5-star recruits have we gotten because Javon is in the NFL?
If Worthy, Keshawn or another former Spartan starts to make pro bowls and/or gets a huge 2nd NFL contract, that will be a game changer for MSU's recruiting.
