  • Gholston is screwed. Hate to say it, but whoever said they hope they put more stock in game tape does not bode well for him. If you look at game tape you see an immature player who plays when he feels like playing, has a suspect motor, along with bad measurables, and top it all off a cousin who was a bonified bust in the pros.

  • He needed to dazzle. He has not dazzled. Worst fall would be to the 6th round I'm thinking.

We are always about 2 rounds off in terms of MSU players for some reason.

  • The problem with Will was that he had the size but he never was consistent and his technique was lacking... Wish him the best of luck but he should've came back

Is Will pulling a Vontaze Burfict with his combine performance?

Get outta here with that jive.

So what you're saying, based on past MSU results in the draft, is that Gholston will go in the 5th, Bell in the 4th, and Sims will be UFA?

Le'Veon helped himself; so far, Gholston & Sims haven't, at least in the measurables. (They may go off in the interviews/medical/Wonderlic, for all we know.)

Based on the measurables alone, I'd be surprised if Le'Veon didn't go in the 2nd/3rd round; Gholston & Sims look more like 4th-5th rounders and maybe lower.

I really wish Gholston & Sims had come back, for their own benefit. *Sigh*

  • In other news, I hope Kirk gets traded on draft day. Won't happen, but still.

With RG3 recuperating from injury, and likely not available for Week 1? Damn straight it won't happen. Captain Kirk will be starting, and shocking the world. rockon

  • None of these guys are worth a #5 pick. Let's hope Cinci really wants to move up and get glennon or something.

That said, his film shows that he's very slow off the line, he'll get drafted as a 5-technique DE in a 3-4 that relies more on power for run D and maybe eventually develop some pass rush moves. Also his height is attracted, tied with Ezekiel Ansah right now for most pass deflections of all DL at the combine.

Agree with the above. Haven't read many scouting reports but I've been saying this for months. Much better fit imo.

What makes you say that Sims didn't help himself? He had more than solid numbers and scouts said he stood out. Bell helped himself a lot, not just ini the 40 time, but in the 2 cone drill and in pass catching. If a team has a need he could go in the early 2nd now IMO.

Gholston, well, tough combine, his stock will plummett IMO. Too bad, he got bad advice and should have come back.

Rittenberg's writeup would agree with you:

Michigan State's Dion Sims tied for third among tight ends in the bench press at 22 reps, was third in the vertical leap (35 inches) and finished second in both the three-cone and 60-yard shuttle drills. He was 12th in the 40-yard dash at 4.75 seconds and 12th in broad jump at 112 inches.

I'm thinking specifically of his poor performance in the pass drills. He's a better pass catcher than blocker (like Kellen Davis), but didn't show it at the Combine.

His tape will show some pass catching skills, not so much for the blocking. The Combine will raise doubt about his ability to catch NFL passes, won't help him on the blocking.

Rating third in this TE pool doesn't say much, IMHO. He should have owned the pool, and (I think, we'll never know) would have, if he had stayed at MSU one more year.

  • He mentioned in an interview that his training has been focused more on power rush technique and using his hands. Maybe he just said eff the 40 and decided to just focus on technique/strength. shrug

So they can run a 2 qb formation with Dalton and Glennon?

  • Is there anyone here who has had their opinion changed?

In other words, if you thought Bell, Gholston and/or Sims made a mistake in leaving, has the combine made you change your mind? Was there ever a real chance you were going to change your mind?

Even if Bell drops to the 3rd or maybe even the 4th (should be unlikely), his was an f-ing no-brainer. 350 carries in college doesn't help anyone's stock.

Sims and Gholston? I was on the fence before, and very much on it now. You can't just say, "oh, come back, play well, and raise your stock" because a lot of guys never make that next leap and cost themselves a lot of money. In Sims' case in particular, he hadn't shown much in school but had every measurable in the world. If he plays lights-out next year for MSU, sure, maybe he goes in the 1st. If he doesn't, or gets injured again? He might not be drafted at all.

Bell: No mistake, best time to go
    Sims: TBD
    Gholston: Mistake

My point is that I feel there are a lot of people(Not saying you're one of them) who are still bitter over Bell, Sims and/or Gholston leaving, and they're choosing certain aspects of the combine to reignite their complaining.

  • So what do you make of Sims dropping all that weight for the tryouts.

Did the staff want him playing at 280 or is he now just getting motivated ?

Combine times are notoriously slow. Bell should run a bit faster at pro day and solidify a 2nd round pick IMO.

Why is that? Please explain, because the combine looks super stupid.

I'm no expert, but I'd be extremely surprised if Bell goes before somewhere in the 3rd round. The RB group doesn't seem that strong overall, and there seemed to be quite a few similar size/weight RB's that looked better. Just my humble opinion.

I'm not bitter, certainly not over Bell (no question he made the right choice, especially given the shallow RB pool this year). I'm not bitter over either Sims or Gholston, just sad, because I think they would have had a better chance next year if they'd come back, put in their work, and put more on tape. (Sims especially surprised me, leaving with essentially no tape to show anybody.)

And no, the Combine hasn't changed my mind either way, on anyone. lol
