Color me old fashioned, but I still think leaving college with a degree in hand is a great move. Sure, you can get hurt during your senior year, but that degree is an insurance policy--insurance against not being able to provide for yourself and family long term.

Plus the actual insurance policy a lot of guys take out that would help them recoup any losses from a catastrophic injury...

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

Those things aren't as simple as many think. A policy for a "career ending" injury is pretty straight forward--your right leg is gone, and you ain't playing no moar, we'll pay. But those injuries are rare. A policy for a "value hurting" injury is much more complicated. If you're projected a first rounder, get an ACL or such, and now you're a second rounder and loss $$$--much harder to predict, insurance companies fight them, and much more expensive.

  • If a player leaves early flops out in the league, is injured, whatever it may be. If they decide to go back to school to finish their degree, they have to pay their own way correct? You should just stay while your on scholarship and earn your degree. Even if you want to go pro in 3 years of eligibility you can graduate in three years right?

Most serious players go to a camp that trains them in the drills starting immediately after the bowl season until last week. Also some of this (40 times, bench press, etc) get done when players are getting recruited for college and some of it (the lifting at least) continues during their season. Honestly there's zero excuse for a player like Gholston to completely screw up knowing what his film says and having gone through these drills 40 or 50 times since January 1.

    Thanks sprtnbrn!

Will didn't really help himself with that 4.93. Usually unofficial times are faster as well. 3rd-4th rounder.

nope, he didn't. I just saw it and it was pretty avg. Mayock did him no favors: "Gholston was an enigma in that he has all the talent in the world, but was only HONORABLE MENTION big ten....why IS that? He's also Vernon Gholston's cousin."blackeye

....all but came right out and said he needed another year in EL

The Vernon Gholston's cousin comment is the kiss of death.

the thing is, it's not the first time I've heard it in last 4 days: "Vernon Gholston's COUSIN"? FUcking A, I'm sure Ted Bundy had a cousin too and I doubt he was a serial killer. (pretty accurate analogy with the way the media talks about Vernon....jebus, you'd think he butchered multiple people instead of washing out in the NFL)

Yeah, Ray Lewis' brother got cut from the Cowboys on Hard Knocks. Don't see how one has anything to do with his relative.

If you flop in the leauge I'm pretty sure you'll have enough to afford tuition right afterward.

And been hearing more and more about how his tape also highlights how much he was held all year.

I would think this would hurt him more than anything. NFL doesn't want DEs that allow themselves to be held.

  • So I know that once a player enters the draft he can't undo it. But could one just reapply to college? Just curious...

Not necessarily... it's a tough global job market nowadays. I will fault no one for leaving early and trying to make some big money when they see a chance.

Sign an agent, you are no longer considered an amateur by the NCAA. Sure you could reapply to college, but you aren't playing sports.
