Belle Isle

  • I thought they organizers did a hell of a job with the event this weekend. The island looked great as well.

The track incident is unfortunate. The decision to use hot rubber to repair the track was the incorrect one. Those areas should have been milled wider and deeper and filled with a tackcoat and two lifts of hot asphalt. To me, from the surface it looked like another cutting corners type of job to save a few bucks, which I thought reflected poorly on the city/island/organizers.

  • So who won? The last Indy car driver I really remember was Paul Tracy if that says anything. Glad to hear they are back on Belle Isle.

Those repairs were in place since the last race to take place there. The previous day of racing went fine, and gave no indication that the repairs needed to be re-done.

It was cool but the track layout was wrong. They could never really get any speed going. If they made it so they could really get going in sections and be able to pass often it would have been better.

It's officially called the Detroit Street Circuit. I'm 25 and the last time they ran it I was too young to remember. While I think Belle Isle certainly works, I would absolutely love to see it downtown. I can't imagine how cool it would be to watch those guys go flying up Woodward if they were to change up the course a little.

There were decent stretches for speed, especially down Atwater. IIRC the biggest bitch by the drivers was the bumpiness of the course. That could have been corrected.

Went to many DGP's when it was run on the street circuit. I lost interest when it moved to Belle Isle. Just wasn't the same experience

Black eye ? Detroit is getting great pub from the media and IndyCar for putting on such a great event so far this weekend . The situation with the track is unfortunate but they're fixing it as we speak so they can get back to racing .

They sold out all 30,000 grandstand seats today and IndyCar estimated the event will pump $50M into the economy .

The economic impact statements are often vastly inflated. Does it bring in money? Yes. $50 million? Not even close. The only money it really brings in is the money from outside the area, money that wouldn't be spent unless this event took place. It's a lot lower than most of these estimates state. Had an interesting discussion about this with Liedholm when Detroit was picked to host the super bowl.

There actually are deer on Belle Isle. Not many, but apparently some...plus they just discovered beavers are back after a century gone. They believe the river is getting cleaner and bringing back wildlife.

I used to go to Belle Isle and feed the deer with my Dad when I was a kid. It was pretty cool, they would eat apples out of your hand.

Too bad there are so few left. Just another blow to the Detroit I once knew and remember.

As far as the Grand Prix downtown, it was a good event, they could open it up a bit in certain places on the track like along the river.

If there was ever a time to move this race downtown, it is now. Nobody works down there any longer. Do a full lap on the people mover, the amount of empty office space you will see is sickening.

No, absolutely not. Keep your boring, left turn only NASCAR races there. Penske is a Detroit guy, and the Grand Prix belongs in Detroit. Period, end of story.

Actually when MIS first opened they did have a road course......

I have worked downtown for over three years and that statement is not even remotely true. While the CBD is dead at night, it is positively vibrant during the workday. In the last few years Quicken and Blue Cross Blue Shield alone have moved something like 8,000 employees downtown. Go downtown at lunch tomorrow...you will be shocked. This does not even take into account the fact that lofts/condos/apartments downtown are basically all full. Detroit's neighborhoods have a TON of issues, but downtown without a doubt is strongly coming back (I can list all the current/pending rehabs/developments going on if you'd like).

Anywho...I ran an 8K on Belle Isle a few summers back which took us through the wooded area on the eastern part of the island. The path was really pretty. The island has so much potential - it will be interesting to see what happens when the State Park system likely takes it over in the next year or two.

  • I saw William Gholston at the Grand Prix today, and thought it was kinda cool. He isn't anywhere close to as jacked as I would expect though.

There was nothing untrue about that statement. He's surprisingly slender, and I imagine he'll be asked to add at least 20 pounds once he reaches the NFL.
