Best Acting Performance Ever

After watching Silence of the Lambs last night, I would say that Anthony Hopkins in SOTL or Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York are my top 2.
Any thoughts?

BTW...the answer to the question in the OP is Paul Giamatti in Sideways.

Cannot agree more, I can't stand Jack Nicholson and have been saying all he does is play Jack Nicholson. He has zero range as an actor, zero!
Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs is a good start. My darkhorse would be Brad Pitt in Seven, he was perfect as the arroghant and naive detective.

This. Also De Niro in Raging Bull, Al Pacino in The Godfather (1&2).
But I have to say my final answer would be Christian Bale in American Psycho. He played "insane" so well and the movie was so much creepier because of it.

My favorite Jack Nicholson performance is in "Five Easy Pieces." It was one of his first films and his performance is much more understated than the "Heeeere's Johnny!" caricature he's coasted on in a few too many movies.
Off the top of my head here are some other great acting performances:
Robert Deniro in Raging Bull
Marlon Brando in The Godfather and On the Waterfront
Humphrey Bogart in The Caine Mutiny
Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies and Apocalypse Now
By the way, "Five Easy Pieces" is not a porno about cheerleaders

Side note -- the best acted movie if you take all actors and combine them is "Heat". The acting in that movie is suburb all the way around

It's very hard to compare performances from different eras with such differing acting styles. Here's a few of my favorites that instantly come to mind:
Peter O'Toole - Lawrence of Arabia
Robert De Niro - Raging Bull, Taxi Driver
Marlon Brando - A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront
Bette Davis - All About Eve
Paul Newman - Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler
Jack Nicholson - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
My favorites of the last decade were Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler, and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. None of these are creative choices but truly, almost undeniably great performances.
