Interesting side note: My wife had the hots for Daniel Day-Lewis in a big way after seeing him in The Last of the Mohicans. Anyhow she was sick shortly after this and begged me to go rent My Left Foot for her. If you haven't seen the movie DDL couldn't have been a bigger turn off than if he tried in that movie, needless to say my wife was extremely disappointed. For the record I do a real good impersonation of DDL in My Left Foot - I don't think my wife really appreciates it though.

Male: Billy Bob Thornton - Sling Blade
Female: Meryl Streep - Sophie's Choice
Thornton was a completely unique character without any prosthetics or makeup. Incredible. And Streep was so good and so naturally in character it almost seems weird to hear her speak without that accent.

The scene where she is talking to herself with the gun is excellent

I'll give one up for BBob. Great performance and a movie that is better the 2nd or 3rd time you see it.

Of all the good Pitt movies, you choose Seven? Not 12 monkeys or Meet Joe Black, or Fight Club?
All this talk about Nicholson, I thought he was superb in The Departed.
Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump anybody?
And I know it's been mentioned, but my young self thinks Heath Ledger as the Joker takes the top spot on any list.

Marlon Brando in the Godfather
Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco, Scarface, Godfather etc
Johnny Depp in Donnie Brasco
Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men
But I think by far the best is R Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket. That was truly outstanding considering he adlibbed the entire thing. Could really tell that he was a drill instructor before that movie.

Honestly i hated fight club not sure why. But seven was the first one that came to mind.
Departed was a great movie all around.
Id throw out Leonardo decaprio in aviator , thought that was great really want to see his newer one.
Another imo underrated performace was Matt Damon in the talented mr ripley.
The first time MSU basketball aired in France the French surrendered to Tom Izzo just to be safe.

I would add:
Jimmy Stewart: Rear Window.
Gregory Peck: To Kill a Mockingbird.
Sean Connery, Robert DiNiro: The Untouchables
Al Pacino: Serpico. also Dog Day Afternoon.
Meryl Streep: anything she has ever done.
agree re Brando: Streetcar Named Desire.

My Left Foot is arguably DDL's best acting job though he will always be famous for Gangs of New York and TWBB.

I was going to suggest Norton in Primal Fear but I'm not a movie guy so I am willing to concede that it may certainly not be the greatest. It is the best acting I've ever seen.
Tim Robbins was so god damn good in Mystic River. Laura Linney was fantastic as Sean Penn's wife as well. The scene at the end of the movie where is seems to be getting moist telling Penn how strong and brave he is makes me fucking furious.
Plus one for putting Norton in the conversation.
