  • Interesting interpretation. I don't know anything about Best Coast other than the Wiki but I'd guess this is what they do. It's not terrible but has zero soul.

The piano playing was 1st grade level and the drummer had on a Scorpions shirt lol!

Here's a Stevie Nicks stripped down version for comparison.

    Stevie Nicks "Rhiannon" [piano version]

"Rhiannon" was written by Stevie Nicks after reading Triad by Mary Leader. This song was originally played on an acoustic piano in the Buckingham Nicks days before it was transformed into the rock version we all know and love. It was intended to be on Buckingham Nicks' second album, but Polydor dropped them from the label. On December 31, 1974, Buckingham and Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac, and this song was released on their self-entitled album. Though Fleetwood Mac helped make this song a hit, "Rhiannon" will always be one of Nicks' most iconic songs. "Rhiannon" was written long ago, but this is not an original demo. This particular version can be found on Nicks' Enchanted Box Set. "Rhiannon" is certainly an "enchanted" song. After all - as Nicks used to say - "this is a song about a Welsh witch." To all of those that have commented on the quote I used, I did not mean to imply that Rhiannon was in fact a Welsh witch. I was simply restating something Nicks said in her 1976 Rosebud performance of this song. I'm sorry for the confusion. I hope that this updated information is much clearer. Enjoy!

  • Keep in mind there are just two people here, not 5. There's also no guitar and Stevie Nicks is hard to emulate.

Yes, they have just two people. They tried to do a signature song of a band that was very popular for a number of years and will probably receive some harsh judgement if enough people even care. Lindsay Buckingham's guitar playing on "Rhiannon" helped propel that tune into one of the most well known songs Fleetwood Mac ever put out, especially the live version. It seems severely lacking without the guitar, but maybe an attempt with the guitar would have brought more criticism. Generally, I'm not a fan of covers.

    Yea, bands shouldn't experiment.

Soulless is a perfect word to describe Beth Coast. Vapid fashion rock at its worst.

by that logic if she had done it solo with cu zoo it would have been more worthwhile.

If she's doing it with the Colorado University zoo is it still solo?

  • Not all covers are winners, like this one -- it's not great. However to say musicians should never try to do covers is ridiculous. Would you rather Aretha never experimented with Otis Redding's "Respect?"

  • Thought this user comment summed it up well:

"C'mon! This song is not a 3-chord ditty that can be played by a sub-par guitar player trying to learn piano. Its far more musically intricate. I'm sorry but this is not a "different spin" on Rhiannon, it is insulting to Fleetwood Mac that Best Cost would make this song in a major key and ruin it for a new generation of music listeners. And I like Best Coast"
