Best Golf in SE - Mich

You're an idiot. They do well for a city course with an excellent layout. The only goofy hole on that course is #10 because they literally built the green the wrong way (it slopes completely from front to back).

5 Courses in SE Michigan That Nobody Talks About But Are Worth Playing
    1) Dearborn CC
    2) Dunham Hills GC
    3) Oakhurst CC
    4) RS Sharf/Katke Cousins @ OU
    5) Spring Meadows CC (Linden, which is more Flint-area but is a fantastic track).

Agree on Dunham Hills. You can play there dirt cheap too. Only #9 is a bad hole.

6, 9 and 14 are bad holes, but the greens are always in great shape and it's always a challenge.

  • Dunham Hills is a good track, been a number of years since I played it.

Played Oakhurst and Katke, I wouldn't rank them in my top 5 in the Metro Detroit area.

The problem with your list is most people cannot play Katke or Oakhurst unless connected.

I played Moose Ridge maybe 8-9 years ago and thought it was the best course in the area I had ever played.

Then played there 2-3x a couple of summers ago and it had fallen hard (Valenti-ism). Is it back up to great form?

Really want to check out Shepard's Hollow. Majestic is cool.

I think Sanctuary Lake in Troy is pretty decent for a links style muni course. Of course it's now getting run down, also, with lack of funding but if you play it early in the year probably still in good shape. Nowhere near one of the "best", but really liked it when I've played it.

I agree that two summers ago moose ridge was in pretty bad shape. If I remember it was in a lot better shape last year.

Also coyote preserve was my favorite course last summer. unbelievable condition

    Oakland Hills Shepherd's Hollow

I dont know why there were any responses after this one. Oakland Hills is clearly the answer.

    Leslie park is a shithole

You are crazy. Leslie has some great holes.

    Other courses on my list:

    UM Blue Course
    Meadowbrook
    Oakland Hills
Calderone Farms (very under rated course)

Don't you need a UM affiliation to play Radrick?

Also, i forgot about the above mentioned Timber Trace. One of the very best in the area IMO and a bargain.

Yes, but you can get a limited membership without being a graduate or faculty.
Same with Katke Cousins and Sharf.

I probably play these three courses the most in the area. Get out to Meadowbrook and Pine Lake a lot. Detroit Golf Club once or twice a year.

Though Sharf is nice looking, the best course at OU is Katke. I worked there for 2 summers and would try to play Katke at least 3 times a week.

  • What - no love for Hawthorne Valley?

But seriously - I would add the Grande in Jackson to this list, though it is on the edge of the SE area. Some fun risk-reward holes, and after the round you can make the short trek to Gene Davis & Sons for their awesome 1 lb pork chop!

  • By June of next year, Orchard Lake will be at or near the top with Oakland Hills (South), CCD, Red Run, and Detroit Golf Club.

Oakland Hills will always be at the top for their history if nothing else, but it is way too difficult for a vast majority of golfers.

I've played Pine Lake a number of times and it's a very good course with great conditioning. The two holes they redid some years ago with the water features unfortunately do not fit with the rest of the course. The par 3 is a much better hole than the tricked up par 5.

Are they making changes at Orchard Lake?

    Calderone is sooooo underrated

Great course and dirt cheap to play

It seems like nobody knows about it

I've read that it's going through a restoration. Check out the site www.golfcourseatlas.com under the Discussion Group tab and search for detailed information.

  • Detroit Golf Club (Both the Par 68 and the longer course)... probably on a Top 3 of the nicest courses I've ever played. Course was immaculate.

I like baypointe. A couple cool holes. Usually in good shape. I think its private tho, but I could be wrong

  • How do the private courses like Detroit Golf Club, Lochmoor Country Club, or Detroit Country Club, compare to the public courses?? I'm contemplating joining a country club and wondering if its worth the extra cost for full golf membership.

I've played Rattle Run before in high school and didn't think it was anything special 6 years ago or whatever it was.

I played Rattle Run every year since HS and it def isn't that great. Actually it seems to have gotten worse over the years.

If Calderone counts as SE Michigan, The Grande should also be on this list. Both are Jackson county.

do it. no comparison. easy to get in right now. plus many of the private courses do reciprocals with most other privates. no crowds. good, personalized service, great golf courses.

  • I've played more crappy courses than good but 3 Courses I've played that stand out are Dearborn cc, meadowbrook, and tangle wood. Love the old courses with huge trees.
